76 EDITORIALLast year’s weekender was meant to be my last, but no onepromoter seemed up to taking the show over completely. However I found two Northern and Modern stalwarts, Phil Dick and NeilRushton, who are running the event with me. They both know howto organize big events like Detroit A Go Go and Soul Fusion andhave great contacts – especially Willie Kendrick & Frank Bryant!I’ll be doing most of the graft up to the arrival of the acts but thenPhil and Neil will take over the bulk of the event work. I’ll bedirecting operations horizontally from the bar.

It wasn’t broke, so we didn’t fix it. We have just added two newguests, Steve Hobbs and Mick Farrer, to the Modern Room andtweaked the DJ sessions and line-up very slightly. It’s business as usual.

There is a new pub on site at the corner before you walk by thepool to the dancehall. Current licensing restrictions mean it is notlicensed for dances but we will get a broad selection of great KentCDs playing in there; it’s an extra hang-out. It will be servingBreakfast, Lunch and Dinner, 5pm to 9pm on Friday and 9am to9pm, Saturday and Sunday. The Pub will close at Midnight and isalso open to the Public and Park residents; whereas the dancehallbars are just for us. There will also be a Snack Bar available in theMain Starlight Room (as last year); this will serve food when the main room is open until Midnight.

Kent records continue to support our event and there has beenplenty of CD and vinyl action; most of which will be available fromR&B records in the main dance hall. They also continue to providesome of the best rare soul sounds that I am lucky enough to play. There’s the vocal of G Davis and R Tyler’s ‘Hold On Help Is On TheWay’ by Aaron Neville, Melvin Hicks & The Versatiles ‘TheIntruder’, Holly Maxwell ‘Three Strikes And You’re Out’ and theFamily Brick’s original version of ‘I’ll Fly To Your Open Arms’. The 100 Club lives on; the only club to regularly feature recordsfrom the world’s greatest rare soul collection – as played by Butch.I do have to call on Matt Bolton to run a couple of the nighters ayear; that and some Phyllosan should ensure I can make it throughto the 40th Anniversary in 2019.

Here’s to the most relaxed Cleethorpes ever – I hope!Ady, Phil & Neil6

Willie Kendrick has been involved inDetroit Soul since 1960. Heremembers “I was walking roundEast Detroit and I came across abuilding, there was no sign in thewindow but my intuition was that itwas something to do with music so I knocked on the front door and wentin. It opened straight into a RecordingStudio, and they were recordingDavid Ruffin there and then. MarvinGaye was on drums, Harvey Fuquawas playing piano and Billy Daviswas involved too. I had walkedstraight off the street into a session, and I thought they would be angry.Harvey said this is Anna Records and

asked, what do you want and I replied I want to be a singer soHarvey said OK let’s hear you. I sangthree songs. Marvin said he liked oneof them and Harvey says we cannotpay you, but you can come here andhang around and learn and listen.”

Willie stayed with Anna for acouple of years but only recorded onesingle in 1962, scheduled for theaffiliated Checkmate label, it remainsunreleased. When Anna was boughtout by Berry Gordy, Willie movedwith Billy Davis to Checker for a 1963release ‘Let Me Know’. He joined upwith the new Golden World set-up atthe end of the year and despite being

a Detroit singer on a labelthat would epitomiseDetroit indy soul labels, his‘Stop This Train’ for thelabel was recorded in NewYork by Robert Banks. “I had known Frank Bryantfrom my neighborhood andthat’s how I ended up inThe Just Brothers. I canremember recording‘Carlena’ and it’s good toknow it is appreciated in theUK all these years on. We recorded ‘Good Time’with the Funk Brothers atUnited Sound and sent thetapes to Johnny Nash’slabel, Jomada. Next thingwe knew the record cameout, with our song and ourtrack but my vocals hadbeen replaced and the artistwas Johnny Daye. We werestunned.”

That was in early 1966 but thedisappointment was soon forgottenwhen Pied Piper Productions signedhim to their company and producedfour stunning sides for RCA. ‘YouCan’t Bypass Love’ was the first A side, co-written by Willie and JoeHunter. The next release in 1967 waseven better ‘Change Your Ways’ anexplosion of uptempo, sassy Detroitsoul that was “discovered” by EnglishDJs five years later and has beenplayed at Northern Soul clubs aroundthe country ever since. The flip was a beautiful mid-tempo take of a superb Larry Banks song ‘What’sThat On Your Finger’ which is alsofrequently played on the scene.

We thought that was the end ofWillie’s short but brilliant recordingcareer until Kent records gainedaccess to the Pied Piper vaults andunearthed another four songs neverreleased. There was a take on TonyHester’s Pied Piper classic ‘WatchYourself’, the Metros ‘Time ChangesThings’, written by Jack Ashford,

Lorraine Chandler and Ray Monetteand a quirky and amusing JoeHunter penned dancer called‘American Dollar’. The cream of thecrop though was another Ashford & Chandler original called ‘She’ll BeLeaving You’. Set at a moody mid-tempo pace it epitomises thebrooding atmosphere of Pied PiperProductions at their peak and will be a highlight of Willie’s forthcomingshow.

Willie did finally get to perform‘She’ll Be Leaving You’ at Detroit A Go Go in Detroit last year and byall accounts it was a showstopper.Let’s leave the last words with Willie.

“What’s my favourite recordingsfrom that situation? Well ‘What’s OnYour Finger’ I like a lot, but myfavourite is ‘Change Your Ways’, I really liked that. RCA wanted me to leave Pied Piper and move to New York and sign direct to them. They said we will make you a realstar. But Detroit was steeped in mySoul, and I didn’t want to leave.”

FRANK BRYANT 1312

Frank and his brotherJimmy Bryant formedthe Just Brothers in1965 when Jimmyreturned from hismilitary duty. The pairsang excellent, lightharmonic vocals andwere often used asbacking vocals on Detroitsoul sessions. Bothbrothers could writesongs; Frank co-wrote‘Deeper In Love’ for J J Barnes.

They were managed and producedby Winford “Johnny” Terry who hadbeen a Drifter from 1963-1965 but leftto concentrate on his own productions;he was also a songwriter. Their firstrecording session in 1965 produced‘Honey’, ‘Things Will Be BetterTomorrow’ and what was thought to bea throwaway instrumental B side‘Sliced Tomatoes’. ‘Honey’ was shelveduntil released on Hayley records in the21st Century and the other twosneaked out on Lupine to little success.

In early 1966 the Bryants addedtheir friend Willie Kendrick as a leadvocalist and the three of them combinedto record ‘Good Time’ at United Soundstudios in Detroit; unbeknown to themthe record ended up coming out onJohnny Nash’s Jomada labelin March that year butWillie’s vocals had beenerased and JohnnyDaye’s were used. At least they werecredited with thewriting andarranging of theperformance.

Next theyrecorded ‘Carlena’and ‘She Broke His

Heart’ for Johnny Terrywho got the sides placedwith Wand records inlate 1966, but despitebeing allocated a releasenumber were neverpressed. They weremoved to the Garrisonlabel, which was beingdistributed by Scepter /Wand, for a 1967 waxingbut judging by today’sprice in the thousands of

pounds, did not sell enough for a secondpressing. The Lupine side ‘Things WillBe Better’ then came out on Empirewith ‘She Broke His Heart’ probably in1967. Willie Kendrick had been head-hunted as a solo singer by Pied PiperProductions by then.

A five year hiatus was ended whenJohnny Terry managed to restart theact on his brother-in-laws the Hollandbrothers’ Music Merchant label. In 1972they recycled ‘Sliced Tomatoes’ on noless than three separate 45s withdiffering vocal A sides. Those also failedto sell but the DJs and dancers of theNorthern Soul scene finally got to hearthe mid 60s recording and fell in lovewith the unusual funk-edged stomper. It went on to become a rare soul classic

and was later sampled by Fat BoySlim for his international hit

‘Rockafeller Skank’. Jimmy has sadly passed

away but for the firsttime Frank Bryantwill be reunited onstage with hisfriend and fellowJust Brother, WillieKendrick to relivethose glorious

Detroit soulmoments.

JIM SMIRK

MARK CLUGSTON

Just two weeks after the last weekender welost one of Cleethorpes’ biggest fans andenthusiasts; Jim Smirk. He was a Mancunian(blue to the core) who was a devoted husbandto Liz for 44 years, a loving Dad to Gary & Dean and a soul brother through andthrough. He arranged a party of soul friendsfor the very first event and enjoyed it somuch that he attended every single one. When he started he was living in Macclesfieldand the Macc Lads were among the verykeenest attendees, their party grew to overtwenty some years. Jim and the ladsregularly supported the 100 Club and most

progressive Northern nights and nightersaround the country. For Cleethorpes they brought their wives and girlfriends, whosimilarly joined in the fun. Jim was areassuring presence for me, as a sometimesnervy promoter. If Jim and friends were inattendance, I could relax a bit knowing thatthe atmosphere would be great and therewould be at least one group of satisfiedcustomers. In recent years Jim lost his greatfriend and soul brother Glenn Hunter, thenshortly after Dave Pointon also diedunexpectedly and close soul friend AllanPollard too. After that his long distancetravels were less but he always booked andorganise a very large party from the NorthWest for this event. I and many others willmiss him badly this weekend and I’ll think ofhim when I pass his gang’s usual spot in thetop bar of the main dancehall; and at thefront of the stage loving the acts too of course.Close friend Kev Farley told me “Anybodywho knew Jim would know how he wouldlight up a room as soon as he walked into it... one of the nicest guys you could ever wishto meet”. R. I. P.

It is with great sadness that we bring thenews of the passing of Mark Clugston fromBolton aged just 55. He had battledLeukaemia for two and a half yearsand passed away peacefully at home inMarch, with his wife Pam, children Amy,Kyle and Becky and his family around him.

Mark was a joiner by trade and was adaft and much loved, Grandad. He startedhis musical journey going to theNorthern all-nighters at Wigan Casino in1978 aged sixteen, with sister Elaine andbrother Pat. They travelled the country, dancing to the music they loved. Theywere at the start of the Modern Soul scene atSnaith all-dayers with Soul Sam, Arthur andRichard.

Mark enjoyed Weekenders especiallySouthport with sister Laurie, Andy andMickyD and going to the Euros with brotherDom, but it was Cleethorpes with Pam, Steand Karen he really loved. You couldn’t missour two caravans – decked out in Englandflags and bunting and afternoon parties withcheesy tunes from Pat’s lucky dip box. Therewas Elaine’s burnt pizza and Mark BBQingin his full St George’s kit, complete withsword – enough to get Ady ringing Woombleto tell us to turn the music down – and

musical chairs with Randle! Sunday nightChinese with the Coxes.

Mark was always on the dance floor andthis weekend we will remember him withlove and a smile on our faces as he loved life, his family and friends, soul music andfootball. RIP Bro. We’ll see you when we getthere. Elaine xxx
