ABOUT PAMOJA TRUST

Non-profit making organization that seeks to promote access to land, shelter and basic services for the urban poor .

Founded to support for the anti-evictions movement that arose and grew in Kenya in the late 1990s and early 2000.

Our Vision: An equitable and democratic society where urban citizens have adequate space.

Our Mission: PT exists to facilitate and advocate for processes and approaches aimed at strengthening people’s organization formations to ensure better livelihoods for the Urban Poor.

MUUNGANO WA WANAVIJIJI

Settlement based network (Movement) of slum dwellers that was started in 1996 to resist against brutal evictions and land grabbing that was rampant from the mid 1990s to early 2000s.

Spread in 15 counties with over 60,000 members in over 400 informal settlements.

The movement manifests its position in aiding the needs of the urban and to an extent the rural poor, through lobbying and advocacy.

Acquisition of secure tenure for residents of informal settlements. Precedence setting for provision of better services and within the

settlements.

MWW’s TOOLS OF ORGANIZING

Organizes communities around issues affecting them. Mobilizes through daily savings in savings schemes, Community-led enumeration, city wide profiling and

inventory Prioritization of issues and projects Linkages and partnership with service providers and

partner and Cross-settlement learning and exchanges. Community driven housing and infrastructure projects.

MWW ACHIEVEMENTS

Developed , sharpened and marketed its tools and systems of organizing communities

Built relationships with local authorities, service providers, donors, other civil society organizations, financial institutions, private sector and institutions of learning.

Pushed for county priorities for inclusion to the county Integrated Plan

PT’S INTERVENTION ON HIV AND AIDS

The Trust build's the relationship between sector mainstreaming and mainstreaming in: Program and development interventions. Harnesses interaction between different project

teams, local communities and development partners.

Facilitate employees or project team members commit to specific activities.

PT’S ACTIVITIES Supporting PLWHA to start up Income generating

activities. Link and recommend groups to government and private

tendering processes and election to the service boards. Train groups on the need to integrate with PLWHA. Link groups with support groups/ organizations. Set up and build welfare team to be able to support the

affected and infected. Setting up of home work study centers for orphans and

community children. Training of groups and PLWHA on Urban farming.

INCOME GENERATING ACTIVITIES

Income generating activities are crucial for promoting initiative, responsibility and self-sustenance. PT supports the groups to come up with projects geared

towards sustainable development for persons living with HIV and AIDS.

Case Study Toi Upendo Ladies Founded in 2005 Trained and provided with resources for self-sufficiency. Group of 25 Women from diverse communities of Kenya

operating their small scale businesses within the market. 16 members living with HIV and AIDS and 9 are affected. Trained and provided with resources for self-sufficiency.

CONCLUSION

Successful intervention targeting the poor communities requires: Internalization, Institutionalization, Establishment Strengthening of the community capacities Autonomy Planning, coordination and integration of stakeholder plans

role of the communities and other partners in designing, implementing and monitoring the HIVand AIDS interventions.

RECOMENTATIONS

Contribute to the national HIV&AIDS response from the workplace. Raise staff awareness and knowledge levels and encourage behavior change. Adequate and deliberate resource allocation. To protect staff and community during and after the recruitment process. To facilitate free interaction between staff and with the community. Safeguard staff health especially those working with high risk groups. Enhance a sense of belonging and reduce stigmatization and subsequently

increase productivity and service to community. As a guide for psycho-social support within the institution which creates a

conducive work environment. To offer crucial guidelines to mainstreaming HIV & AIDS in the

community.
