In its programme for government, approved by Tynwald in January 2017, the

Isle of Man’s new administration set out priorities for the next five years. One

of its three strategic objectives is to create an inclusive and caring society, with

the objective of “tackling the inequalities in our Island society”.

The Isle of Man Constabulary will be proud to play its part in helping to

continue to create such a society, where everyone is treated fairly, where differ-

ence is welcomed and embraced and where tolerance abounds.

In the pages that follow you will find the Constabulary’s latest inclusion

strategy, which sets out our approach and some of the work that we will do as

a service and with partners over the next three or four years. The underlying

principles of the strategy are simple: that we will provide a service that is

accessible to everyone, irrespective of their needs; that we will build trust and

understanding with the whole of our community, but particularly with those

people who feel most vulnerable because of their gender, their sexual

orientation, their disability, their faith, their age, their health or their

nationality; and we will keep listening and learning so that we keep getting

better at keeping people safe.

The Constabulary is a values–based organisation, which prides itself in having

great people who genuinely care about the community they serve. Those

people will do all that they can to help create the inclusive and caring society

that everyone surely wants.

Good Governance.

Monitor progress, take responsibility and be accountable for performance.

We aim to provide the best service to all in our communities.

We recognise that the Isle of Man has diverse communities. The Isle of Man Constabulary recognises everyone is an individual and is different. We aim to provide the best service to all regardless of difference. That service will be tailored to the needs of individuals.

Why?

We will:

Listen and learn through engagement.

Build mutual understanding and trust.

Ensure service is accessible to all.

What?

Implementing this strategy.

Actions speak louder than words.

We will convert this strategy into action by delivering the best possible service to everyone, irrespective of how complex their needs may be. We will do this by consistently demonstrating our organisational values.

How?

Inviting scrutiny.

Report to an identified group of leaders from our communities who will come together in the form of a scrutiny group.

Reporting annually

Prepare a report for inclusion in the Chief Constable’s annual report.

We have identified officers who take ownership for the following groups:

Race, faith and nationality.

Disability and Age

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT)

Who?

These groups will:

Ensure that inclusion work is part of our approach to neighbourhood policing and to our public protection work. Consequently we will report to the scrutiny group on:

Engaging, understanding and meeting the needs of our communities

How we have worked with the community to build trust, so that we protect the vulnerable.

Policing and partnership working

Identifying, developing and sharing good practice in terms of inclusion. We will also identify where our work needs to improve, learning from our mistakes.

Workforce development and culture

How we have sought to promote difference and inclusivity, by reducing ignorance, celebrating inclusion and developing our people.

Success will be:

Providing the best service to all in our communities

We will know that we are succeeding when people tell us that they feel safe; when they tell us that they are confident in us and when they are satisfied with the ser-vice that we provide. Success will ultimately be a society where even the most vulnerable people are not afraid.
