St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund Awards $$$ for New Programs

During 2008, staff from St. Vincent Home for Children helped others in St. Louis County spread the word about “Putting Kids First”, an initiative to bring the issue of children’s mental health service needs to the attention of St. Louis County voters. In November 2008, voters passed a quarter cent sales tax to generate revenue to fund mental health services and improve outcomes for St. Louis County youth. As a result, St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund “Keeping Kids First” was created. Local agencies were asked to submit proposals for funding this Spring. A total of $35,000,000 was available and proposals totaling $72 million were received. The competition was rigorous but 44 agencies were selected to provide programs and services to benefit the children of St. Louis County. This funding cycle begins August 1st and continues until December 31, 2011.

St. Vincent Home for Children is proud to announce that we were funded for three new programs through this initiative. Temporary Shelter Services, Respite Care Services, and a home-based program, SMART Parenting, will soon begin providing services to St. Louis County children and families. “We are so grateful to the St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund for the opportunity to serve a larger number of children and families in need” said Executive Director Lee Ann Taylor. “Staff worked very hard to develop sound programs that meet some of the currently unmet community needs and were rewarded for their efforts by receiving this funding. We will share our outcomes as these programs progress and look forward to having some great success stories to share with you!”

Youth Helping Youth

On the evening of July 30th, the gymnasium at Immaculate Conception Church in Arnold was transformed into “Hug-fest 2.” Last summer Colin Davis, then age 17, had the idea to organize a rock concert to benefit teens who were struggling with a variety of life issues. Colin selected St. Vincent Home for Children as his charity and the first “Hug-fest” raised $500 to benefit the work that we do. This year Colin decided to make it an annual event and surpassed his previous record by raising $600 to support us. The gym was filled with young people who have loving, supportive families but who also recognize that everyone is not so lucky. Hats off to Colin and his friends for their commitment to help other area youth!

St. Vincent Home for Children Celebrates 160 Years (1850 – 2010)

In 1850 when German businessmen in St. Louis saw a desperate need for an orphanage to care for children who had lost their parents to cholera or fire, the German St. Vincent Orphan Association (still our legal name) was founded to meet an important need. Now, 160 years later, St. Vincent Home for Children continues to meet important – while different -- needs in the community. Remaining true to our mission of serving children and families, St. Vincent is still relevant. We are accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA), which is a true measure of meeting the most rigorous standards of excellence. St. Vincent provides Residential Treatment Services, Alternative Special Education, Temporary shelter Services, Respite Care Services, and a home-based program, SMART Parenting.

We could not continue our programs and services over these past years without the tremendous support of all the wonderful people who have given of their time, talent, and financial support. We are humbled and grateful that people who care about children and families work to help us make a difference. Our goal this year is to raise $160,000 to commemorate our 160th year and to continue to “foster hope and build success” for the next generation. We offer our sincere thanks to those who have joined our 160th Anniversary Club! We know your support has been vital, now and over the years. It is still not too late to help. Please consider investing in the lives of children by making a tax deductible donation to St. Vincent Home for Children today. No gift is too large or small. All help us meet the needs of children, youth and families.

Our First Trivia Night

Our first Trivia Night was held in the gym on March 13, 2010. Local trivia buffs enjoyed a birthday party theme as we celebrated our 160th anniversary. Steve Potter, of STL-TV and WKMU Radio, did a great job as MC. Board members, staff, and new and old friends had a blast while promoting a great cause. Based on the overwhelming response, we are planning another Trivia Night: Saturday, November 6th at 7:00 p.m.

L-R: Ernie Angelbeck, Business Agent, David Zimmerman,

President-Business Manager, Lee Ann Taylor

Sheet Metal Workers Local 36 hosted their annual golf tournament at Glen Echo Country Club on May 3, 2010, benefiting St. Vincent Home for Children. Over the past thirteen years, the Sheet Metal Workers have donated over $180,000 to support our important work with children and families. Despite the economic conditions over the past two years, David Zimmermann, President-Business Manager, has encouraged his members and their friends to come out for this event to help our kids.

“Sheet Metal Workers Local 36 truly are committed to helping us help kids and words cannot express our deep appreciation for their support” said Lee Ann Taylor, Executive Director.
