Our mission: MIFA engages the community to sustain the independence of seniors, transform the lives of families in crisis, and equip teens for success.

Our vision: MIFA works to unite our diverse community to address the challenges of poverty.

On the cover: MIFA’s Presley Place housing community, whose construction was funded by Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation, celebrated its tenth anniversary this summer.

MIFA friends, After a series of happy events–the amazing run of the Griz and the president’s visit to BTW – Memphis has experi-enced the challenges of flooding and relentless heat. Through the good and the bad, Memphians hung together. While the devastating flooding and record-breaking heat have made the national news, another crisis continues to impact many in our community in a less visible way. In this third year of a challenging economic environment, many of our neighbors are overwhelmed by debt that has been mounting since the recession began. When a client requests assistance through Emergency Services, we ask that they disclose their total debt; since last year, the total utility debt carried by those applying for assistance has increased 41% and now exceeds $2.9 million. Emergency Services provides assistance to families in crisis, but it can only offer an average of $210 and assistance once every two years. But that small amount, coupled with negotiations with MLGW, landlords, or mortgage holders, can prevent cutoffs, evictions, and defaults. A small amount with a big result. This year we are celebrating donors who give the big amounts that make those small amounts possible. MIFA’s Circle of Hope, composed of those individual donors who give $1,000 or more annually, is having its 20th anniversary. Over 20 years, Circle of Hope members have provided more than $12 million to ensure that families in crisis have utilities and housing, that home bound seniors have nutritious lunches and daily visitors, and that residents of long-term care facilities have advocates and mediators. MIFA’s Circle of Hope – another reason to be a proud Memphian! Sincerely,

Sally Jones HeinzMIFA Executive Director

Presley Place celebrates 10 years

Ten years ago, Presley Place opened its doors to homeless families in need of a new start. Today, the 12-unit housing community continues to provide shelter and amenities for residents of MIFA Housing.

Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation generously funded the construction of Presley Place, which has been home to more than 200 families since it opened on July 10, 2001. But this community is more than a shelter—it’s part of a transitional housing program which provides comprehensive life skills education to its clients, along with case management, mentor-ing, and guidance for all ages.

As resident manager of Presley Place, Hattie Noland helps other families in their quests to live independently and productively with confidence.

“No one ever knew I was homeless,” Hattie explains. “But we found Presley Place and it changed my life. We had a place to stay. We didn’t have to stay in a car.”

“This program inspired me to remember my humble beginnings and to strive for advancement,” she says. She advanced to become a true suc-cess story of MIFA’s housing program. As a staff member, she continues to help families overcome powerful barriers to independence.

Elvis Presley Enterprises and the charitable foundation have generously supported MIFA for many years, and we are grateful for this anniversary and our continued partnership!

Presley Place opened its doors to residents of MIFA Housing Opportunities ten years ago this July.

MIFA’s Inter-Faith Coordinator Linda Marks is pictured with Don Wright, an elder at Lindenwood Christian Church and manager of the MIFA-Lindenwood Neighborhood Garden.

MIFA-Lindenwood Neighborhood Garden thrives

On March 13, 2009, a group of 40 volunteers from Lindenwood Christian Church arrived at a weed-choked lot near MIFA head-quarters on Estival Place. They went to work clearing brush and stumps, picking up trash, and tearing a tangle of invasive plants away to reveal the fertile soil underneath. They staked a sign in the ground that stood stark white against the once-neglected back-drop: this was the Lindenwood-MIFA Neighborhood Garden.

The nearly 8,000 square foot lot backs up to MIFA’s Estival Place housing community, and the original vision for the garden in-volved engaging resident families and neighbors to cultivate their own garden plots. The results of this effort have exceeded all ex-pectations.

A challenging first season was redeemed by Lindenwood associate minister Rev. Johnny Wray and volunteer Gina Dancer, who, after a perilously dry summer, led gardeners to a fruitful fall harvest. Representatives from GrowMemphis offered guidance on tech-nique and provided starter plants for gardeners.

The garden is now in its second season, and its transformation has been incredible. Thanks to the hard work of parishioners from Lindenwood, MIFA’s Inter-Faith Coordinator Linda Marks, and

garden manager Don Wright, the formerly overgrown lot is now home to 19 beds and a rich variety of thriving produce.

But the garden’s abundance reaches far beyond its potential for harvest—it invites neighbors in and provides them an opportunity to grow produce, to come together, and to take pride in making a formerly desolate spot fruitful and beautiful. Gardeners include clients of MIFA Housing Opportunities; several residents of a fa-cility managed by Door of Hope, another local nonprofit combat-ing homelessness; a neighbor who received aid from MIFA years ago; and an east Memphis resident who helped coordinate the One Light, Many Colors series on world religions held recently at Town Village retirement community. The value of this cooperative effort cannot be measured, but it is surely indicated by the connections made there: Don Wright, an elder at Lindenwood and the gar-den’s manager, learned that he could receive assistance through Emergency Services as he worked alongside MIFA social worker Yolanda Ross. Yolanda’s mother, 62-year-old Bettie Nelson, is also participating in the garden project.

Memphis was recently named hunger capital of the nation, with more than one-fourth of its people unable to afford adequate food, in addition to a high rate of obesity and associated health prob-

lems. Those living in poverty have disparately poor opportunities to practice good nutrition and to obtain wholesome food. Through the garden, as well as its Meals on Wheels program, MIFA joins many other groups and individuals in the Mid-South working to expand opportunities for health and well-being for all.

The garden is now home to colorful artwork created by children in MIFA Housing Opportunities under the leadership of art instruc-tors from Junior League of Memphis. Nestled among the garden’s beds and trees are bright birdhouses, bird baths, and decorative stones the children created, as well as murals painted by Aramark employees. Realizing the garden’s potential would have been im-possible without the invaluable support of Lindenwood Christian Church, whose associate minister Rev. Sarah Taylor Peck led a blessing and dedication of the garden in July. So many in the Lindenwood congregation have worked to make the garden a suc-cess, and MIFA and its surrounding neighborhood will reap the benefits for years to come.

Now that the MIFA-Lindenwood Neighborhood Garden has its roots firmly planted, we can move forward faithfully in the knowl-edge that good things grow from fertile ground.

If your congregation would like more information on opportunities at MIFA, please contact Linda Marks, Inter-Faith Coordinator, at (901) 527-0208, ext. 218, or [email protected].

MIFA employees give backEach year, MIFA’s fundraising team encourages employees to give back through an employee giving campaign. Staff members are committed to their jobs and MIFA’s mission, and one way they show it is through payroll deduction or a one-time gift to this campaign. This year, employees contributed more than $14,000!

Staff members were asked why they give to MIFA. Here are some of their responses:

I give to MIFA because I know what MIFA gives to others every single day. The grateful look on a mother’s face when she receives assistance with rent, or the way our Meals clients light up when volunteers knock on their doors, or the hope for a better tomorrow I see in our COOL students.

- Joyce “J.B.” Bishop,Receptionist

I give because I am grateful to be in a position to give. Any of us could be in need of help—we know where we have been, but we don’t know what lies ahead.

-Kim Rushin,MIFA Housing Opportunities Program Manager

I relate each MIFA client to someone in my family. I see my grandmother in each senior and hope that someone would feed her if she couldn’t. I see my sister in each mother who needs food/utility/housing assistance, so their kids are cared for. My parents weren’t wealthy, and we struggled, and thankfully it never came to the point of eviction, or utility cutoffs, but it was close. Mostly, I give because I just keep thinking “There, but for the grace of God, go I.”

-Kari Beth Dungan,Emergency Housing Partnership Central Intake Coordinator

Emergency Housing Partnership Central Intake Worker Kari Beth Dungan and Receptionist Joyce “J.B.” Bishop are among the MIFA employees who contributed to this year’s employee giving campaign.
