Sincerely,

Tom Clairmont, President & CEO, LRGHealthcare

When you need your community hospital and physicians, you expect us to be here for you.And for many years we have done just that—served everyone in our community in theirtimes of need, regardless of ability to pay. That is the mission of this organization and ourlocal provider network, but we cannot do it alone.

Over the years, businesses, civic organizations, and individuals from our community havestepped up to support healthcare in our community. Businesses such as Metrocast, whosepresenting sponsorship of the 2008 LRGHealthcare Red Dress Gala helped us raise more than$48,000 to support women’s cardiac health in our community. Our local banks, LaconiaSavings Bank, Franklin Savings Bank, and Meredith Village Savings Bank, who havefaithfully supported our golf tournaments, Red Dress Galas, and annual funds year after year. And a number of other local and regional businesses—small and large—have come throughfor us, giving generously to help support their local healthcare system.

Individuals and organizations have also made their mark, donating to a number of initiatives.Over recent years, appreciative patients, their families and friends, and service organizationssuch as the local Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs, our Nursery Guild and Auxiliaries, have helpedus raise funds to purchase new CT scanners for both our Laconia and Franklin facilities;enhance nursing care through helping to fund nursing education; and most recently, ourcommunity has been helping us fund the acquisition of digital mammography technology forour communities. This is in addition to helping to fund the HealthLink Program, the DentalResource Center, our Hematology/Oncology program, and so many other important services–services that are meaningful to donors on a personal level.

Just as you need us to be here for you, we need you to be here for us. These communitypartnerships are vital to our ability to continue to keep healthcare available, affordable andaccessible for our community. And that support is about to become even more vital.

Healthcare financing is challenging. The State and Federal governments reimburse us lessthan the cost of providing care for Medicaid and Medicare patients. Many commercialinsurers are not reimbursing us at a level that covers the cost of providing care to our patients,or a level that will enable us to continue to maintain the level of access to providers we havein our community today. Compound these challenges with the rising cost of healthcare, agrowing elderly population, looming additional cuts to Medicare and Medicaid reimburse-ment, and a critical shortage of primary care physicians across the country, and you see thehealthcare financing crisis ahead. Yet even in the face of these challenges, we are looking to

the future, and have committed to continuing to evolve to meet our community’shealthcare needs both today and tomorrow.

Our community has demonstrated their understanding of the important role theyplay in keeping our local healthcare system strong—they have shown that throughphilanthropic support, advocacy to support our efforts toward legislative reform, andthrough their outspoken support of LRGHealthcare as we have worked to securethe reimbursement our community needs from commercial insurers. Most of all, they have shown their support by continuing to “buy local,” and choosing theirlocal healthcare system.

We are able to do what we do because of you—our community. You have been there for us inthe past, and we will continue to need you to be there for us in the future. Just as we will behere for you.

Ready to Serve in Your Time of Need

Focus / Spring 2008

Fibroids are a very common condition in women—in fact, three out of four women may have these non-cancerousmasses during their childbearing years. For some women, they aresmall and cause no symptoms, but for others, they can be large enough to be a nuisance.

Fibroids are bundles of smooth muscle cells that organize into a firm mass. They can be in or on theuterine wall, and you can have more then one fibroid at a time. Usually, women don’t know theyhave them unless they are found during an examination or they are causing symptoms such as heavymenstrual bleeding, longer than normal periods or bleeding between periods.

It is not clear what causes fibroids, but we do know that fibroids thrive on the estrogen that isnaturally made by a woman’s body during her reproductive years. If your mother or another closefemale relative has had fibroids, your risk of getting them is increased. Obesity may also increase yourrisk. The real cause could be a combination of genetic, hormonal and environmental factors.

If it is suspected that you have fibroids, your provider will usually order an ultrasound to confirm thediagnosis and determine the exact location and size of the fibroids. Treatment is not always needed, and is usually necessary only if the fibroids are causing irregular period symptoms or pelvic pain.

If surgery is suggested, your provider will discuss different surgical procedures with you. Some surger-ies can remove the fibroids and leave the uterus intact, maintaining your fertility. In some cases, yourprovider may recommend a hysterectomy, which removes the uterus along with the fibroids.

Every case is different, and your provider will work with you to decide the best courseof treatment for you.

Focus / Spring 2008

Spring is coming, and we will soon have the opportunity toget out and enjoy the many activities that come along with therising temperatures.

One of the most popular sports for children is bicycle riding. With more and more kidspedaling on our roadways, it is important to keep safety in mind.

The best way you can keep your child safe on a bicycle is to make sure he or she wears aproperly fitted bike helmet.

According to the National Safe Kids Campaign, “Each year more than 100 children diefrom bicycle-related injuries, and more than a quarter million are treated in emergencyrooms. Of these, nearly half (47 percent) have traumatic brain injuries. A bike helmet isessential safety gear. Helmets could prevent an estimated 75 percent of bike-related childfatalities and up to 45,000 head injuries to children each year. In a crash, a child is 14 timesas likely to be killed if not wearing a helmet.”

If that’s not enough to convince you that your child should be wearing properly fitted bikehelmets, here’s something that might: it’s the law. As of January 1, 2006, children up to theage of 16 in New Hampshire are required to wear a bicycle helmet.

And there’s one other thing you can do to help keep your child safe: set a good example. Ifyou wear a helmet when biking, your child will be much more likely to wear his or hers. While the helmet law applies only to children, helmets are equally important to keepadults safe. No matter how long you have been riding a bicycle, or how confident you are, accidents can happen to anyone, at any time.

Protect yourself and your family: make sure you and your lovedones put on bike helmets each and every time you get on

a bike.

For information on local resources,low-cost bike helmets, or a freehelmet safety fitting, please call934-2060, ext. 369 or 527-2948.
