The impact of COVID-19 pandemic has affectedmany people and many businesses across allindustries and it can have implications also for theAugmented and Virtual Reality market. However,VR/R technologies may have their best moment as aconsequence of the coronavirus and they could beconsidered among the most useful technologies inthe coming period. This pandemic will present a huge opportunity fordigital transformation and the possibility VR/ARcould bring to a new way of smart working.Coronavirus might determine how we are going toexperience work, events, tourism, and generalhabits from now on, so it is necessary to redesignmany fields and Intercative Technologies canaddress some of the issues that arise. Businesses arenow forced to shift their operations online andcustomers to stay at home. What better time toredefine it with the implementation of XR? Besides, in our favor, the market for AugmentedReality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) and MixedReality (MR) is predicted with a growth of 23 percentfor the end of the current year, especially in theAsia/Pacific area. (from Worldwide QuarterlyAugmented and Virtual Reality Headset Tracker).

Just look at the Laval Virtual World, an event thatwas supposed to be held in Laval, France from 22ndto 24th April, but instead the organizers adapted itand created complete Virtual Event. This formturned out very useful and kept the event on theschedule as planned. Laval Virtual World turned outto be a great success, connecting 11,200 participantsfrom 110 different countries. This is the right time. Seize the potential!

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland

VTT Technical Research Centre of

Finland Ltd is the leading research

and technology company in the

Nordic countries. With 73 years of

experience they use research and

knowledge to develop new smart

technologies, profitable solutions

and innovative services.

VTT has chosen five areas of major

challenges and growth opportu-

nities: Climate action, Resource

sufficiency, Good life, Safety and

security, Industrial renewal. There are

also specialized areas of cutting-edge

research, solutions and possibilities

for collaboration, such as Virtual and

Augmented Reality. More and more

industrial sectors rely on what are

known as digital twins to help

visualise the big picture. Virtual and

augmented reality make it possible to

build user interfaces for managing

mechanical engineering or

construction assets and the

associated data, such as

“My motivation for joining EuroVRwas to be part of a network of peoplewho are interested in topics such as

Virtual and Augmented Reality. I amalso interested in participating to

common H2020 proposals and be apart of the annual EuroVR

conference.”

Kaj HelinPrincipal scientist in virtual

engineering area and Certified ProjectManager at VTT Tampere.

He joined EuroVR Association since itsfounding, in 2010 and currently holdsthe position of Executive Committee

member.

"We at VTT try to find practical

applications for VR and AR. Our

focus is human-centred and starts

with determining what users need

and how competent they are in

using technology."

hidden elements, throughout the life

cycle of the product or building.

VTT has already exploited VR/MR/AR

and participatory design for some 25

years in order to design and evaluate

high-investment products. The main

goal of using the VR/MR/AR

environment is to provide all

designers and stake holders,

including workers, a possibility to

experience their future workplaces

and/or influence their design.

VR/AR technology can be used, for

example, to provide training,

facilitate planning or coordinate

production processes and

warehouse logistics. Technology

helps workers to perform their tasks

more reliably, more safely,

more efficiently and without having to

rely so heavily on their memory.

Technology also makes it possible to

illustrate to decision-makers and

engineers how a product or a building

looks right now or how it will look in

the future.  Virtual reality provides a

safe environment in which to simulate

dangerous situations, manipulate

robots or drones, or correspond

remotely with on-site maintenance

workers.

LATEST NEWS FROM YOUR PROJECTS

The use of augmented reality (AR) makes the tool unique, thework instructions are provided as text, graphics or speech to theastronaut's Microsoft HoloLens-AR head mounted display. In the latest project, which began in September, the AR tool willbe integrated into the training and operations system currentlyunder development. The importance of the AR tool will increaseas the distances become longer on space missions. At themoment, a space mission lasting slightly over one year ispreceded by training that takes about two years. When flying toMars, the outward journey alone will take more than six months, and when the mission arrives on the planet, the crew has tomanage novel environments and new technologies. It is clear that, using traditional training methods, the duration of training wouldneed to be multiplied. With the AR tool, the astronauts couldpractice the maintenance and repair of equipment to be used onMars during the long outward journey. VTT has already created afuture scenario where astronauts can practice the maintenanceof, for example, the Mars rover in a setting resembling the realenvironment.

The cooperation between the European Space Agency (ESA) andVTT has been close for well over a decade. ESA has been testing a tooldeveloped by VTT as part of its training and operations system. Thetool, using augmented reality, has been developed to supportastronauts in training and operations during a space flight. VTT hasdeveloped a tool that contributes to ESA's goal to give unambiguousguidance to astronauts in complex maintenance and repair tasks bothduring the space mission and when training for it before the flight.
