PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

W ith Christmas over, Mooredale is now in full swing with a variety of Winter sports and

activities throughout the community. During the Holiday Season Preschool hosted another very successful Winter Wonderland. The organizing committee again did a wonderful job of decorating and providing a variety of fun and festive

activities, both inside and outside. The weather was perfect, making for a great event. At our Annual General Meeting in November we welcomed several new members to our Board. We are pleased to welcome the following new members: Lia Mathiesen (Treasurer), Kedrin Case (Swimming Pool Club), Anuja Sharma (Volunteers & Community Liaison), Christina Staikos (Preschool) and Charles Zimmerman (Soccer Club). Retired from the Board at the 2015 AGM were Shuchi Stanger (Past President), Erik Mathiesen (Treasurer), Rachel Busbridge (Preschool), Katharine Lake Berz (Volunteers & Community Liaison) and James McNee (Swimming Pool Club). Each one has contributed so much to our community over the past several years – we sincerely thank them. I know the new Board is ready to continue this tradition of support for Mooredale. I am pleased to follow Carrie Scace as President after her highly successful and productive term.

The most important parts of the Mooredale team, as always, remain Executive Director Marjorie Booth, the staff and the

hundreds of volunteers who never cease working to make Mooredale function so successfully. Mooredale continues to deliver a full array of excellent programs, always looking to further extend our connections into the community and enhance the association. One of the most recent initiatives is a Lending Library which was generously donated by Shuchi Stanger and will benefit Mooredale and community members for years to come. I hope that you are able to take advantage of some of the many activities that Mooredale offers. We always look forward to and appreciate receiving comments about current programs and activities and suggestions for new ones. Regards,

The beauty of snow is well known to everyone who skiis, snowboards, toboggans, and skates outdoors. At Mooredale, we celebrate snow with many of these activities, at Rosedale Park Rink, at Earl Bales Park Ski & Snowboard Centre, and even with the Preschoolers sliding down our own playground hill!

The winter of 2016 is now well along and no doubt we have all seen some beautiful snowy scenes somewhere over the past month. The snowflakes look so different, depending

on the weather:

This winter we are offering new activities and instruction for children, youth, and adults. We continue the French classes, fitness and wellness activities, and opportunities for art and music classes. Branch out this winter and spring and try something new! Happily, the sun gets stronger, the days get longer and we see little green shoots coming up! Snowdrops poke through the snow in area gardens. Mooredale cultivates more than snowdrops... check out these ‘spring species’:

d March Break Camp for 4 – 12 year olds, March 14 – 18 & 21 – 24

d Pool Club renewal – early bird deadline is Feb 26

d Softball and Lacrosse – early bird fee in effect until March 15

d Mooredale Soccer Club – Regular fee applies until March 14 – still space available so register now

d Basketball March Break

d Mayfair is coming... book the dates – May 13 (5 – 9) and May 14 (9 – 5)

d Space available to join the Pool Club Wait List now There are many more choices in the Spring Recreation Guide, included in this issue. Enjoy the rest of the winter doing something special at Mooredale and get ready for the first blooms of Spring. We want you all to ‘bloom and grow’ with Mooredale this Spring!

A Very Musical Mayfair is coming soon!

Friday May 13, 2016 – 5:00 – 9:00pmSaturday May 14, 2016 – 9:00am – 5:00pm

We are already excited and thinking about spring at Mooredale. Plans for Mayfair are well underway and we are looking for almost 1,000 volunteers to help make

Mayfair 2016 a success. We have many opportunities for adults and students. Middle and secondary school students can receive community service hours for their time. We need students to supervise midway games, award prizes at the prize booth, create wacky hair, paint little faces, keep the BBQ stocked and sizzling and coordinate the track and field races. We need adults to help at the BBQ, sell tickets at the fairground, set up on Friday morning and take down on Saturday afternoon. If you are interested in becoming a Mayfair volunteer, we would love to hear from you. Please let us know how you can help. Please email Volunteer Liaison Director, Anuja Sharma at [email protected].

Mayfair 2016Joanne PauliMaYFair CHair

Mayfair 2016 is coming! The theme will be a Very Musical Mayfair – celebrating the role music plays in all our lives, especially for children. So round up the whole family to

have a great time at Rosedale Park on May 13 and 14. The Mayfair preview evening will be on Friday, May 13, from 5:00 to 9:00pm. The full all-day Mayfair will run on Saturday, May 14, from 9:00am to 5:00pm. In case you haven’t been there the last few years, the Friday evening is a giant neighbourhood party you really shouldn’t miss. The carnival rides will all be running, and they look great under the lights! All the Mayfair food venues will be open, for burgers, hot dogs, fries, candy floss – and some special gourmet options. There will be great music on the main stage! And of course the Beer and Wine Garden will be operating from 5:00pm till closing – the two Big Tents will be up and running, a fun place to meet friends, or bring the entire gang for dinner! Saturday morning starts with the Mayfair Parade, arriving in the park at 9:00am Kids who dress up in costumes will win prizes in the parade.

Saturday continues with rides for all ages from Worlds Finest Shows, the Midway Games with awesome prizes, Mayfair Bingo, track and field events, the Bake Booth, and the Kiddie Zone in the rink – with bouncy castles, face painting, wacky hair, the music pavilion, and the silent auction. In addition, there’ll be the beer garden, the outdoor food court, tons of live music on the main stage and in the park... and more! Of course, all this happens because over 1,000 volunteers make it possible. We’ve started the planning, and it would be great if you’d join our team! If you can volunteer at Mayfair please call our Volunteer Hotline at (416) 922-3714 ext 310, or email our Volunteer Liaison, Anuja Sharma, at [email protected]. We’ll be delighted to hear from you!

after a slow start, winter is finally upon us and the holiday season is beginning to seem like a distant memory, but just like your children we are thinking about the next big ‘break’

– and the one after that!

MARCh bREAKOf course, the next big one is March Break. This year our March Break Camp will feature all the fun and excitement you’ve come to expect from Mooredale – with programs for two weeks instead of one! Campers aged 4 – 10 can register today for our camp program. Week 1 of March Break Camp runs from March 14 – 18 and Week 2 from March 21 – 24 (no camp on Friday, March 25). Our program promises a fun-packed week of games and activities including athletics, arts & crafts, cooking, theme days and a field trip. Outdoor activities will depend on the weather conditions. The program runs from 8:30am – 4pm each day (optional aftercare until 5:30) and a hot lunch plus two snacks are included. Space is limited for our March Break camp, so register early to reserve your spot. Registration forms are available online at www.mooredale.com on the March Break Camp page.

We hear the craziest excuses about why people are

too busy to follow our simple rules when in our

parking lot! remember to use the parking lot safely

– even when there is snow and ice! Bottom line …

your children’s safety depends on it.

l Put your phone away before you slowly enter the parking lot

l Always BACK CAREFULLY INTO THE PARKING SPOT

l Do not leave your car running – it pollutes the air for everyone at Mooredale and for our neighbours too

l Please escort your children and walk across the parking lot to use the sidewalk to travel to the Main House and the Coach House entrances.

l Remember to drop off or pick up and then leave the parking lot immediately, to free up the parking spot for the next parent

l The Mooredale Parking Lot is for members who are registered in a Mooredale activity or program at that time; it is not a commuter lot, a parking lot for parents driving their kids to Rosedale School, for guests who are visiting nearby or a parking lot while you are running to appointments or walking your dog.

l If you have a mechanical problem, car breakdown, come to the Main Office and we will assist you. (If it is after hours, please leave a note on your dashboard with a phone number to reach you.)

Snow Clearing Advisory:l If any car is parked overnight, you may be plowed in, while

our snow clearing contractor attempts to clear our lot

l Depending on how much snow falls, when the snow plow clears the lot, the snow is pushed to the edges and over the winter we may lose access to a couple of parking spots along the edges of the lot

l Please stay safe and it will help everyone arrive and leave in a friendly atmosphere.

it was December when I prepared my copy for this issue. The sun was shining and donned only in lightweight jackets with hardly a hat or mitten in sight our preschool children were

happily engaged in the playground. And while the changing climate is worrisome, we embraced the opportunity to prolong our ‘fall’ weather activities with trikes, sand toys, soccer balls and even bubbles (a toddler favourite) enjoyed to the fullest. And as you read this now there are most likely a few centimeters of snow on the ground with a wind chill of -30C... or maybe not!

September 2016 Preschool Registration – New Option!September 2016 Preschool Registration has begun for Toddlers, Nursery School and Kindergarten. We are very pleased to introduce a new Nursery School option... Pre-k. This exciting new option will further support your child’s successful transition into Kindergarten the following year. As well as the Monday to Friday morning nursery class this program will include lunch and an extended afternoon (Monday to Thursday). There will be particular emphasis on language, math, science and engage children using developmentally appropriate techniques and activities in a fun, interactive manner. Afternoon French and Creative Movement classes will be included each week as well. The Pre-k program will begin at 9:15 each day and end at 3:00 Monday to Thursday and 12:30 on Fridays. These classes will be limited in size to ensure the best possible outcomes for your child. Registration Forms are available on our website www.mooredale.com and in the Main House office. We invite you to come and see any or all of our programs in action. Contact the preschool office at either 416-922-3714 ext. 113 or [email protected] to arrange a tour.

It was the holly Jolliest of Mornings at Mooredale! The sun was shining, the air was crisp and families and friends gathered to enjoy the festivities. And such festivities there were Music and Magic, Santa and the Snow Queen, BBQ and Balloons, Sweet Boutique and Silent Auction, Crafts and Candy Cane Carnival, and Gingerbread houses too! Winter Wonderland was a HUGE success. Thank you to all who donated and participated so generously!

Mooredale SC Soccer UpdateWe have been really pleased with the past year, as many of you may know we had 5 players get called into Youth National Teams from the soccer club this year. The Players have played for Canada, Switzerland, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, and Bermuda. Three of our players have left to go to Professional Academies (2 to Toronto FC and one to the Seattle Sounders). We have also had three girls move into the OPDL (Provincial League). This is huge for such a young club as ours and we hope that our continued Coach

CLUB

GET IN THE ACTION • GET IN THE FUN • GET IN THE GAME

It all starts in our House League (Recreational Soccer League). This year we have added a Friday option to the U4’s. We know that waking up with the little ones to start at 8am was extremely difficult, so we will offer both a Friday (5:30pm) and a Saturday (8am) option. So far the early registrations show that adding a Friday evening option will be well received! We are continuing with our Technical Staff and our Jr. Technical Staff working with the Volunteer Soccer Coaches to help run our house league. The satisfaction surveys were overwhelmingly positive regarding this. So if you know anyone interested in becoming a paid coach with us, please contact Chris. We have a mentoring program, pay for all the licenses you need and it is truly a unique program. We are the only club with such an intensive Coach Mentoring Program as noted by the Toronto Soccer Association at the recent Club Technical Meetings. We have listened to you, we are moving our U12 and U14 House Leagues to De La Salle College on Saturdays. We know that Riverdale Park was not a good venue in terms of field quality. We moved Flag Football to DLS this year and it was a revelation.

Volunteers NeededInterested in developing the next great player? Mooredale is always looking for dedicated individuals to help run our leagues. Whether it’s coaching, managing, or just helping out during the season, that’s plenty of time to make a difference in the lives of the youth in our community. Sign up to volunteer today! [email protected]

Competitive Soccer Try-outsThis Spring we have our District Recreational (formerly known as Select/All-Star) Try-outs for our U13 (2003) to U17 (1999) boys and girls teams. If you are interested in trying out for these teams, please contact Chris ([email protected]) For anyone interested in a trial with the RDP Academy (Competitive U8-U12 program) please contact us. We had our Evaluation Period in the Fall, but we hold ongoing trials to join.

Mooredale Jr. RDP Academy Program

The Jr. RDP Program for players born in 2009 and 2010 is available on Friday’s at Rosedale Park. We are looking for families that would like their sons/daughters to get a taste of the RDP Academy with our Technical Staff. This program is in addition to the House League. The program is here to develop their skills with others looking to possibly move into the more competitive arena in the future. More information is on the website at www.mooredale.com

Mooredale FIFA 16 Xbox Tournament

Mooredale SC hosted its first ever FIFA soccer video game tournament on December 6, 2015. Two winners emerged from the 13 and under tournament; both Patricio and Will showcased the skills of veteran FIFA gamers. In the adult division Nicholas faced the daunting task of competing against many Mooredale staff, but in the end he outlasted everyone and won after penalties were needed in the final. (continued on next page)

It is only few minutes from our clubhouse and is accessible by the subway (get off at the Summerhill Station and is a quick 5-minute walk). Our RDP Academy has grown to almost 300 players! This program is for players wanting to be in the competitive stream of soccer. If you want your child to be in a professional environment – please contact Chris. Altogether our House League and Competitive Teams are working seamlessly now and we are pretty happy with where we are heading. We take on all of the feedback to tinker with the program and hope you’ll be even more satisfied in 2016.

Mooredale Softball We are pleased to announce our new partnership with FirstDown Camps and Clinics. They will be aiding us in delivering great skills clinics for Softball this year. This is included in the price of Softball and will help our young players tremendously. All of softball will be played at Rosedale or Whitney Public School this year. For more information on playing nights and registration availability please see the softball section of our website.

Mooredale LacrosseWe created our Learn to Play Box Lacrosse League in the Rosedale Rink 2 years ago, and it continues again this year. We have been very lucky with our University of Toronto partnership to utilize their players to teach our players how to play the game. We hope this year to have a full-fledged Box Lacrosse League with 4 teams per division. You do need all the proper equipment to take part in Lacrosse, but it is a lot of fun, especially for those hockey players we have in the club. It is a fantastic cross-over sport for them and you won’t have to travel all over the province to play with your friends. For more information go to our Lacrosse Page of the Sports website. For information on our Sports Clinics in Basketball and Soccer, please see our Sports website. This is a new adventure for the club and we have brought in very qualified coaches to work with both players that are competitive and recreational in nature.

Midway through the tournament, we welcomed a representative from Mondelez, who presented the club with an award from the Pride and Joy Campaign that ran this past summer to help promote the Women’s World Cup. Mooredale SC was selected as one of just 18 clubs from across Canada to win the award. Overall the event was a huge success and we look forward to hosting more video game tournaments in the future. We want to thank everyone who attended and especially all those who donated a toy! We were able to donate a large box of toys to Holiday Helpers to aid in their efforts to provide Christmas packages to families in need.

2015 Flag Football Cup Day

Another Flag Football season is in the books; De La Salle College provided a great venue for us to run our 2015 Flag Football season. The season was filled with great weather and great competition. Congratulations to all of our division champions; the U9 Argos, the U11 Vikings and the U14 Argos. We are proud to announce that De La Salle College will be returning as our venue for next season. We have a couple of more announcements regarding the 2016 Flag Football season coming soon!

James McNee, our stalwart pool chair/captain since 2010, announced his retirement from the pool committee this fall. All of us affiliated with not only the pool, but also Mooredale,

as a whole, would like to offer our sincere thanks for his years of dedication and service. We look forward to seeing him in the pool next year as simply an avid swimmer! Thank you James from all of us. As I endeavour to step into the role of pool chair, I first want to thank the entire Mooredale pool staff for such a great season in 2015. Mooredale attracts quality applicants every year, with many returning season after season. We truly are fortunate. I thought it might be fun, especially as we are entering this wintry season of gray skies and short days, to have a countdown to the pool opening. Opening day this year is May 21, so why not countdown the days to help get us through these dark, winter months? Let the countdown begin!

Finally, remember to file away those pool membership cards in a safe place and I wish you all the happiest of new years!

ooredale Concerts presents a feast of wind music, along with cello and piano, when Denmark’s highly adventurous Ensemble MidtVest makes its Canadian debut, Sunday March 13, 3:15pm at Walter Hall, the

Edward Johnson Building, 80 Queen’s Park Crescent. Young, ambitious and dedicated, the Danish ensemble is renowned for creative programming and pushing the boundaries of the traditional classical concert form. The Toronto performance will feature seven members of their ensemble: Martin Qvist Hansen, piano; Charlotte norholt, flute; Peter Kristein, oboe; Charles neidich, clarinet; Yavor Petkov, bassoon; neil Page, horn; and Jonathan Slaatto, cello. Ensemble MidtVest was founded in 2002 of young, international chamber music prize-winners, the full, dynamic ensemble comprises a string quartet, a wind quintet and a pianist, performing a wide range of chamber music. Based in Herning, Denmark, the Ensemble resides at HEART, the Herning Museum of Contemporary Art. The Ensemble performs more than 80 concerts every year in more than 15 different programs and productions, regularly incorporating other musical styles and art forms. For example, under the guidance of artistic advisor Henrik Goldschmidt, solo oboe player with Royal Opera in Copenhagen and a leading expert on Middle Eastern music, the artists have performed with renowned Jewish and Arab musicians from The Middle East Peace Orchestra. Each July, Ensemble MidtVest holds its own chamber music festival at the historic Nørre Vosborg manor on Denmark’s west coast. The Ensemble’s concerts are regularly recorded and broadcast by the Danish Broadcasting Company. Recent tours have included performances in Italy (Ravenna Festival), Sweden, Germany, and Norway. The group will also perform for and interact with our own Mooredale Youth Orchestras at Mooredale House during their visit to Toronto.
