Summer 2016 FOR ACTIVITY YEAR 2015 IN THIS ISSUE

When Northridge was built in the late 1970s, it was state of the art and followed the conventional Medical Model of Care that every nursing home in the country used. Residents received compassionate and exemplary care but the element of ‘home’ was missing in this institutionalized setting. That is about to change. OAHS is embarking not only on a new building, but a completely new model of care—one that is person-centered in a home-like setting. OAHS CEO Dave Rogers says, “While the care residents received has always been compassionate and first rate, we as an industry have been fooling ourselves for years believing we can create an environment in a hospital-like setting that fosters the same feeling that we have of our home. The gift that the Foundation and its donors has made possible will look nothing like ‘your grandmother’s nursing home’. With this gift we can create a space where Residents have choice and control over a space and environment that is truly theirs.”

Trends show that senior populations are growing and will continue to grow. As Baby Boomers age and life-spans lengthen, senior housing and health care environments have to change as well. That

means your continued commitment to local, quality healthcare as we change the course of elder care is as important today as it has ever been. The Big Stone Health Care Foundation has committed to raising funds for the new long term care facility, and has kicked off its “Completing the Vision…a Community of Care” Capital Campaign. The Foundation Board has set a $1 million goal as we invest in the next phase of OAHS’ vision—a facility featuring a model of care that embraces the dignity, vitality and total wellbeing for our seniors along with peace of mind to their families—as well as our own mission to maintain a strong foundation for future needs. Each Campaign gift will serve two purposes: to build with bricks and mortar and to grow our Endowment. Your gift today allows us to build upon your past investments, creating the foundation from which brick and mortar projects, Physician Recruitment efforts and Educational Loans are funded. It means that you are choosing to support and enhance health care services—something that touches each of us at some point in life. Your gift will bring comfort, lessen pain, help bring new life into the world and bring dignity and vitality to long term care.

Completing the Vision

THE LEGACY BIG STONE HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION | Issue 3 2

If only change were as easy as pushing a button!

Change is often initiated by visionaries, but it takes more than just a vision to create

change. Change can only occur when the right people get together and work to make it happen. Change isn’t easy: we’re pushed out of our comfort zone, we’re challenged and we don’t always like it. But medical care in Ortonville has always been about change—from Grand View hospital owned and built by the pioneering team of Drs. Karn and Bolsta in the early 1900s to the ‘new’ hospital built in 1952 to our current hospital. Through the years a new clinic, nursing home, Outreach Center and a Dialysis Unit were added. Each brought with it the latest in design, technology and much needed change. And that was probably stressful. But, the visions of what could be became reality and we now have a cohesive system of care with a wide array of services. Not to mention

the Foundation—one of the first in the area established specifically to raise funds to maintain and expand local health care. You will hear the term “Culture change” a lot in the coming days. What is that? ActionPact defines it as “a process of transforming traditional, institutional long-term care facilities, into true homes. It involves a change of environment, systems and attitude. It’s not just a change you can see, it’s a change you feel; a change elders feel as they direct their own lives and staff feel as they are empowered to help them do so.” You’ve heard it before and have probably even said it yourself: “I don’t want to go into a nursing home!” None of us want to give up our independence, our hobbies, our place in the community and, most of all, our home. That’s why the new long-term care facility is so exciting: it’s not just a new building—it’s a way of caring for our elders so they may live lives of meaning, value and joy. Living in a care facility shouldn’t mean giving up the things you love in life and being shut away from your community. This new model of care in a new environment truly is

completing visions of a caring community—assisted living, catered living and long term care—all connected with a Town Center featuring plenty of space for residents to socialize as well as being open to the larger community. Together we’ve already created an enviable health care system. Now we have another amazing opportunity in front of us: a place to provide long-term care that larger communities only dream of.

You can become a part of the community of care with your donation to the “Completing the Vision…a Community of Care” Capital Campaign.

You can make your gift by filling out the enclosed form or go online at www.bshcf.org and clicking the “Donate Now” button. While you’re on-line, watch our latest video testimonial and find out why others give. Feel free to add your own reasons for giving in a comment!

THE LEGACY BIG STONE HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION | Issue 3 11

The 2015 Annual Gala Affair was an amazing success all the way around! A yellow submarine, Abbey Road, an English Pub and a Mini-Cooper all added to the fun and with over 300 guests, this was our largest Gala event ever! Social Hour included ales, ciders and wines and ‘pub grub.’ A selfie photo booth kept guests busy with interactive props and they also had some fun with trying to spot all the logos in Piccadilly Circus. Brothers Lee and Don Kanten provided a musical backdrop that got everyone in the spirit of the 60s. As part of the program before dinner, a video featuring Scott Simonitch, Ed Kiernat and Don Stolpman on the importance of a Foundation as well as their involvement as donors and patients. Dr. Stacy Longnecker and Dr. Grant Botker spoke about the role the Foundation played in their medical careers. Providing funds for medical education and for student loan repayment is an important part of recruiting physicians—and that they were both born and raised here makes their choosing to practice at OAHS especially rewarding. The buffet dinner of Prime Rib and Stuffed Pork Loin received rave reviews and the Red Velvet Union Jack cakes created by Alicia Wilcox were a hit with everyone. 'The Britins', America's premier Beatles Tribute band had nearly everyone on the dance floor or singing along. From their replica costumes, hair and accents, they did not disappoint. Mary Ross won the $2,500 Vacation Package voucher through Rentz Travel in Morris and Rita Grabow won the pair of Chanhassen Dinner Theatre tickets donated by Big Stone Radio. Thanks to our donors, sponsors and guests, over $10,000 was raised at the Big Stone Health Care Foundation’s 2015 Gala! Without their generosity and support, the Gala would not be the successful and extraordinary event that it is. We truly appreciate each and every one you!
