A Message from Rabbi RachelI hope you’ll indulge me now, as I offer a litany of gratitude, modeled after the beautiful passage in our siddur by Rev. Eugene Pickett:

Modah ani lachem - I am grateful to you.

For the way you nurtured my evolution, supporting me as I became a mother, a rabbi, and a better version of myself: modah ani lachem.

For entrusting me with your children’s Jewish education: modah ani lachem.

For inviting me into your moments of vulnerability: modah ani lachem.

For entertaining my silly-side, singing along to the Disney paradies and teaching me that costumes are most definitely not just for Purim: modah ani lachem.

For your spirit of inquiry and your commitment to having difficult conversations and respectful differences of opinions: modah ani lachem.

A Message from Rabbi JennA few weeks ago, my family drove up to Door County, one of our favorite places in Wisconsin. Door County is where Paul and I spent our honeymoon, three years ago. We remember delighting in watching the sunset at Peninsula State Park as we began this new chapter of life in Wisconsin. This was one week before I began serving as Assistant Rabbi at Congregation Shalom.

I remember the excitement I felt in knowing I was beginning my rabbinate. I remember the anxiety I felt as I worried: Am I ready? Am I deserving enough to serve this holy community under the supervision of such a brilliant and passionate senior rabbi, Noah Chertkoff?

When I think about myself as a new rabbi, fresh out of school, excited, anxious, unsure what to expect, I wish I could hug myself and say, “It’s going to be amazing! This is a welcoming, warm, caring community who will teach you, support you, and help you become a rabbi.”

How blessed am I that I started my rabbinate at Congregation Shalom, a community that has treated me with tremendous respect and kindness. A community that has built me into the rabbi I am today.

B’nei Mitzvot

Oscar RuizOscar will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June 5, 2021. Celebrating this simcha with him are his parents, Sarah Siegel, Andrew Ruiz and Chad Tessmer, and his brothers, Judah Ruiz, William Tessmer and Bennett Tessmer. Oscar attends Shorewood Intermediate School and his favorite subjects are band and science. He also enjoys playing baseball and video games.

To Oscar, becoming a Bar Mitzvah means “connecting more with his Judaism.” For his tzedakah project, Oscar created sports and art kits to hand out to children at the Jewish Community Food Pantry.

Gabriel Goldberg Gabriel will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June 19, 2021. Celebrating this simcha with him are his parents, David Goldberg and Kristin Schroederus, and his brothers Zachary and Joshua. Gabriel attends Lakeshore Middle School and enjoys soccer and PS4.

To Gabriel, becoming a Bar Mitzvah means “Becoming an adult and taking on more responsibility.” For his tzedakah project, Gabriel made sandwiches for homeless people through Just One More Ministry. When Gabriel grows up he would like to be a sports statistician or sports analyst.

Evan Henrickson Evan will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June 19, 2021. Celebrating this simcha with him are his parents, Jess and Heather, and his sister Ruby. Evan attends Milwaukee Jewish Day School where his favorite subjects are social studies, science, English, language arts and gym. He enjoys baseball, fishing and Taekwondo.

To Evan, becoming a Bar Mitzvah means “maturing in my understanding of Judaism, taking on new responsibilities, and pushing myself to be the best that I can be.” For his tzedakah project, Evan volunteered and collected socks for Food is Free Milwaukee. So far, he has collected over 1,600 pairs of socks. When Evan grows up he would like to be a residential carpenter.

Maddie BensonMaddie will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on June 12, 2021. Celebrating this simcha with her are her parents, Aaron and Heather Benson. Maddie is homeschooled and her favorite subjects are ELA and language. She enjoys figure skating, reading and baking.

To Maddie, becoming a Bat Mitzvah means “becoming an adult in the Jewish community, but it also means a celebration.” For her tzedakah project, Maddie intended to read to children in hospitals, but visitors were not allowed due to COVID. Instead, she made a YouTube channel where she reads aloud so children's hospitals around the US can use the videos. When Maddie grows up she would like to be a biochemist specializing in DNA.

Blake Wichman Blake will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June 5, 2021. Celebrating this simcha with him and his parents, Aree & Matthew, and his siblings, Charlie, Reid and Emery. Blake attends Lakeshore Middle School and enjoys football, hockey, and lacrosse. His favorite subjects are math and science.

To Blake, becoming a Bar Mitzvah means “that I promise to continue practicing and celebrating my Jewish identity.” For his tzedakah project, Blake decided to give back to the Lindamood-Bell Foundation. This program was very instrumental in helping Blake navigate his learning needs with his recent dyslexia diagnosis. Blake hopes to give another child the same learning tools he developed through this program. When Blake grows up he’d like to be a professional football player or an orthopedic surgeon.

Sofie Bucher Sofie will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on June 12, 2021. Celebrating this simcha with her are her parents, Natalie Blais, Dave Blais and Scott Bucher, and her step-sister, Kathryn Blais. Sofie attends University School of Milwaukee where her favorite subjects are PE, science and math. She enjoys playing lacrosse and tennis.

To Sofie, becoming a Bat Mitzvah means “a bigger sense of responsibility to my Jewish community as an adult in my religion.” For her tzedakah project, Sofie donated food to St. Ben's House of Peace to help those in need. In thinking about what she wants to be when she grows up, her interests in coaching, physical therapy and real estate may lead to a career in one of these areas.

Pastor Memorial Library RequestIt has been a long time practice to accept donated books into the Library at Shalom. Now, however, our Library contains over 6,000 books and we have very little room for more books. As a result, we ask that you please consider donating your books elsewhere. We will continue to accept books for burial including prayer books, Bibles, Haggadot and other books that have Hebrew prayers in them. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Positively PsychiatryTransitioning with Open Arms and Falling TearsTransitions are inevitable in any organization. We have them yearly in Congregation Shalom’s membership, Board, staff, and clergy. However, we’ve also had some big ones in recent years that are not among routine changes. Those included Rabbi Shapiro and Cantor Berman leaving, being followed by Rabbi Noah and Cantor Perper assuming those positions. While Rabbi Noah has, from what I can tell, settled in beautifully and more successfully than most any replacements of a beloved leader, Cantor Perper can be said to still be in transition, if only because he has not yet worked inside of our building. I’ve written about these transitions in prior Shofars, but it seems especially indicated to do so once again now.

Like so much else in this unprecedented topsy-turvy pandemic year, what is normal can seem abnormal. We have had not one, but two major leadership transitions as both Rabbi Rachel and Rabbi Jenn are leaving, with Rabbi Taylor Poslosky starting as our new Rabbi, along with the well-regarded Brian Avner as the new Director of Lifelong Learning in July. Not only that, but our Executive Director, Linda Holifield, has a new assistant, and the plans as of this writing are for the staff and clergy to be returning to work in the building on July 1st, 2021. Then again, it could turn out as the saying goes, “man plans and God laughs”! Sadly, we didn’t get to do the live celebrations for Cantor Berman because of the pandemic, and now are praying hard for her health.

In fact, there isn’t even relevant psychological literature for this sort of situational transition. But because transitions in general

are common, there are some quotes about waving goodbye and saying hello that seem relevant.

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” –A.A. Milne of Winnie-the-Pooh

How lucky and blessed we have been to have Rabbis Rachel and Jenn, along with their husbands and children. Indeed, they have become our religious family, teaching, nurturing, and inspiring our spiritual growth and that of our children.

“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” –Dr. Seuss

As much as I still admire Dr. Seuss, despite the recent concern over some early raciest material, I do psychiatrically disagree with the first part of his quote. Yes, smile because Rabbis Rachel and Jenn were with us. However, do cry because it is always important to sufficiently mourn any significant loss so that we are not held back emotionally by the losses. That includes all the other losses we’ve experienced this past year. Perhaps Dr. Seuss is conveying how tempting it is not to be sad and mourn because of how painful that process can be. The last stage that was added to the stages of grief developed by the late psychiatrist Elizabeth Kugler-Ross was that of meaning. These two Rabbis meant so much to us, including helping us through the pandemic time. If we need any other proof of their quality, their new synagogues that jumped at the opportunity to hire both of them to be their new leaders tell us that from outside of our subjective perspective. Of course, the role model and mentoring of Rabbi Noah had to enhance their natural ability and character.

“They must often change, who would be constant in happiness and wisdom.” –Confucius

I suppose there is nothing like an unprecedented pandemic to change so much of our lives. Much caused unhappiness and anxiety. Yet, happiness and wisdom came at Shalom as we adjusted to what Zoom, other technology, and innovation could do, some of which could not be done in our prior time, advances that we may be able to retain. And, if you were there, don’t forget those car parades and parking lot events.

“Crossing thresholds, even anticipated ones, is complicated and challenging. And even when they are some of the most exciting moments we’ll ever experience, they can still be difficult, because they activate our deepest doubts about our choices and ourselves.” –Rabbi Sherre Hirsch of the book Thresholds: How to Thrive through Life’s Transitions to Live Fearlessly and Regret-Free

Even the best aspects of transition can be anxiety provoking for all concerned. That would be normal in this abnormal year. Recognize that in ourselves and each other, and understand why that normal anxiety can be helpful in the long run.

“What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.” –T.S. Eliot

Maybe you had to read this quote a couple of times to try to understand it, as I did. But I think it means that any new beginning starts from the end of something, like a baby out of pregnancy. And we will be beginning again after these several changes, hopefully with new appreciation for what we may have assumed might not change.

Some of how well the future goes at Shalom will depend on us. My psychiatric prescription? Let us welcome these transitions with open arms and falling tears. —Dr. Steven (Hillel) Moffic

Phased Reopening Plan for Our BuildingWe are excited about the recently released COVID vaccines, and we are optimistic that we will see an end to the pandemic in 2021 and a return to familiar routines. The Task Force on Reopening has reviewed and approved a phased reopening plan that addresses all aspects of temple operations. We are happy to announce that in this first phase, we are opening the sanctuary for life cycle events! We will be limiting the number of guests and will put in place several virus mitigation guidelines. Additionally, once the weather gets nicer, we will begin hosting some Friday night services in our parking lot with congregants sitting by or inside their own cars. Saturday Morning Services, Torah Study, Daily Minyan, Religious/Hebrew School, the Office, Evening Meetings, Adult Ed Classes and tutorials will remain virtual at this time.

While we continue to take all precautions necessary to prevent the spread of COVID, please know that Congregation Shalom is here for you. The clergy are available to provide guidance and support and to conduct essential life cycle events. The office is open daily Monday through Thursday 10 am – 5 pm and Friday 10 am – 2 pm. Our virtual offerings continue with religioius and Hebrew school, daily minyan, Shabbat worship, Shabbat songs, Adult Education, Early Childhood programs, Torah study and more. 9June 2021 |

My experiences have filled me with joy and given me opportunities to grow as a rabbi and as a human being. The magnificent members of our congregation and the terrific clergy and staff members have served as my teachers. I cannot thank you all enough for the lessons you have taught me and the care you have shown me.

A highlight of my time here has been being a part of such a collaborative staff and clergy team. Rabbi Noah has been an inspiring, supportive mentor, and I cannot thank him enough for the wisdom, spirit, and passion he has shared with me. I’ll never forget when I received the honor of throwing the first pitch at the Chinooks baseball game, and I confessed to him, “I don’t know how to pitch!” What did he do? He took me to the outdoor sanctuary and taught me how to throw a baseball! That was simply one of many times Rabbi Noah has gone above and beyond to be a supportive mentor. I am grateful for his guidance and friendship.

It has been an honor and a pleasure working with Rabbi Rachel, Rabbi Ron, Cantor Karen, Cantor Perper, Linda Holifield, and Abby Habush Schroeder as well as the members of Shalom's incredible support staff. Our staff has taught me the value of working as a team.

Learning from past and current presidents, Brent Arnold and Beth Silver, has been a gift. These phenomenal individuals demonstrate strong leadership skills and a deep love for our congregation. I have been inspired by Shalom's dedicated board members, lay leaders, religious school faculty, and wonderful community as a whole.

Throughout my time at Shalom, I have experienced a deep sense of holiness while educating members of all ages, providing pastoral care, officiating at life cycle events, engaging young families, working with conversion students, creating valuable Jewish experiences for youth and young professionals, and building community. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your lives during sacred moments; the experiences we have shared have truly uplifted me.

The relationships I have formed with all of you are precious to me.

I would like to again extend my gratitude to the members of the search committee who welcomed me into the Shalom community years ago. My family will always feel at home at Congregation Shalom, a place that has brought us great holiness. We will miss each of you dearly, and we look forward to staying in touch.

For our young people whose questions and spirits breathe new life into our sacred inheritance: modah ani lachem.

For the moments of seemingly unending laughter, and for the space for tears: modah ani lachem.

For the way you welcomed not only me, and Albert, and our children, but my parents and my grandma, and my whole extended family to be part of your congregational family: modah ani lachem.

For all the beautiful and authentic friendships that enrich my life and the life of my family: modah ani lachem.

For the devoted members of our administration and maintenance staff whose diligent work sustains us all: modah ani lachem.

For our incredible teachers who offer their whole hearts to our students, especially during this most challenging year: modah ani lachem.

For collaboration with dedicated and creative lay leaders and volunteers who give of themselves so that we might always strive towards fulfilling our synagogue’s mission: modah ani lachem.

For the chance of a lifetime, to work alongside and learn from the very best clergy and professional team. For Rabbi Ron’s thoughtful care, and Cantor Karen’s spiritual generosity. For Linda’s steady leadership and Abby’s creativity and dedication. For Rabbi Jenn’s emotional wisdom, and for Cantor Perper’s vibrant soul: modah ani lachem.

For Rabbi Noah. My mentor and friend. My partner in conversation, on whom I can always count to offer a different perspective. For the hours you spent encouraging me, including me, lifting me up, helping me cultivate my rabbinic tools. For the personal example you offer in your own rabbinate, for all of this and so much more: modah ani lachem.

For this congregation’s bright future. For Rabbi Poslosky who will bring her own gifts, adding to the texture of this place, and for my dear friend, Brian Avner, who will bring his creative, sensitive, dedicated, and brilliant leadership to this congregation’s educational program: Modah ani lachem.

For all of these gifts and more, I will forever be grateful.

It strikes me that as we part ways in our journey, we read from Sefer Bamidbar, which chronicles people's journey. Though I anticipate the next step of my journey with great enthusiasm, the thought of our journeys having to now part ways, breaks my heart. But it’s the kind of heartbreak that leaves me more open and whole.

Modah ani lachem.
