Sam Garrett which is your position andyour role at Dallara, and how do youoperate?“For fourteen years, 1997-2011, I was anindependent contractor to Dallara, servingas the technical representative in the USand dealing on a day to day basis with theIndyCar Series and teams. Early last year Ibecame the first employee of the new UScompany, Dallara LLC. My current title isQuality Control Leader and TechnicalLiaison Leader. I have maintained my roleas the primary technical liaison with theteams, and added the responsibility foroverseeing the Quality Control departmentfor the US operation”.

Which is the toughest part of your job?Could you tell us about a very difficultcase you had to face?“The most difficult part for me is thepolitical aspect of being the sole supplierfor the chassis. As an engineer, it isrelatively straightforward to identify andsolve problems with the physical parts. Butdealing with the conflicting interests of theteams is a real challenge.When supplying a car in a series withchassis competition, the goal is clear-deliver the fastest car. In a series withoutchassis competition, the goals aremore complicated. From the

series perspective, it is essential that wedeliver the same high quality chassis, partsand service to each team.In reality, however, what each teamactually wants is a car that is skewed totheir particular individual interests, and thefreedom to modify it at their discretion.Consider the situation with the new IR12.INDYCAR, taking input from the teamowners and fans, formulated the concept of the single rolling chassis and the optionfor body kits. Dallara agreed to the conceptand delivered the new cars on time, at theagreed price. The cars ran, from day one,without any significant mechanicalproblems. And the on-track competition hasbeen heralded as the best in many years. And yet, the teams are more vocal thanever with complaints that they areunreasonably handicapped by the rules.Trying to balance these diverse, conflictingdemands is by far the most stressful part ofthe job”.

Looking at Italy from the US: canyou pick Dallara’sstrongest weaponsas worldwide

racing car manufacturer?Dallara’s wide range of projects, in multipleracing series around the world, and astrong partnership with the majorautomobile manufacturers in the designand development of ultra-highperformance road vehicles, give thecompany the experience and knowledge totake on any challenge. The constantreinvestment in technology gives us thetools we need to be successful. And theskills of our management team, knowingwhich jobs to accept and which ones toavoid, keep us on sound financial footing.It’s the combination ofall these things thatmake us strong”.

How are the partnerships with Dallaradeveloping outside the races? How is itgoing with the interactive area?“At Dallara LLC, we are working to expandthe image of the company beyond justbeing a chassis supplier. We are working toengage the local community, which hasembraced us and made us feel at home.The interactive area is now open to thepublic, so our neighbors have theopportunity to learn about the history ofthe company and the technology behind oursuccess. Fans can take a tour of theworkshop area. Our partners, The IndyCarExperience, host parties and social eventsseveral times per week in the space adjacentto the interactive area. The Lino’s Coffeeshop is located in the front corner of ourbuilding, so we interact with the communityevery day as we have lunch. And the DallaraLLC employees are customers of the shopsand restaurants on Main St in Speedway.We are also working to expand our businessoutside of racing. Consultancies are asignificant part of the business for Dallara,and we want to branch out and engageother business sectors. Up to now, we havebeen primarily engaged in the support ofthe 2012 IndyCar Series chassis, but we arealso busy making contacts in the aircraftand aerospace industry, which are verystrong in the US. We are optimistic thatthese contacts will lead to new businessopportunities for Dallara”.

Let’s talk about two different motor racingworlds, the European and the US one: inwhich aspects are they similar and inwhich they differ?“I think that the largest difference between motorsports in Europe and the US is that the major racing seriesare managed by a single sanctioning body(FIA) in Europe but through fragmentedsanctioning bodies (INDYCAR, NASCAR,ALMS, Grand-AM, SCCA, USAC, ARCA, etc.) inthe US.The participants in motorsports are all verycompetitive individuals, each seeking togain an advantage for themselves, and oftenoverlooking the big picture of what is goodfor the series overall. A “benevolentdictatorship” works best to keep everyone inline and working towards a common goaland, from a US perspective, it seems thatthe situation in Europe is much better inthat respect.In the US, there is a constant debatebetween the teams and the sanctioningbody, and the situation in the IndyCar Seriesis a good example. The teams spend asmuch effort maneuvering for gains off thetrack as they do preparing for the actual on-track competition. I suspect that this issomewhat true for European motorsport aswell, but the difference is that the FIA ismore powerful, and therefore moresuccessful at forcing the teams to aconsensus”.

What would you suggest to a Europeanrace-nut at his first IndyCar experience?“I think that most Europeans, attending anIndyCar race for the first time, would beamazed by the access they can get to thedrivers, cars and teams. I’m not veryfamiliar with the European racingexperience, but I know that the European guests we have at theIndyCar events all comment about how great it is to be able to walk up right toa driver and shake his hand, or get anautograph, or to get a photograph ofthemselves standing next to a car, or havinga conversation with the mechanics. They arealways amazed that, at the top level of USformula car racing, they have suchunfettered access”.

After the tragic loss of Dan Wheldon, whathas been improved, safety-wise?“Most of the safety improvements in the IR12car were well underway before the tragicaccident in Las Vegas. Dan was the test anddevelopment driver for the Dallaraprototype, and he was instrumental inverifying that the many new ideasincorporated in the new chassis were working as intended.What really changed after Dan’s death wasthe attitude of the drivers and teamstowards safety. There are many safetyenhancements incorporated on the new car,some of which are new and unique.When thecar was first introduced, there were somecomments that the car was too different, tooradical. But, after the horrendous accident

in the 2011 final race, the attitude of thepaddock was changed, and there is nowmore willingness, even some urgency, tofocus on safety and embrace new solutions.Some of the new features of the IR12, suchas the additional foam padding in thecockpit and the expansion of the side anti-intrusion panels, were immediately wellreceived. Other concepts, such as the rearwheel guards, the wider underwing andnarrower track, and the shaped front wingendplates, were less intuitive and met withsome skepticism. However, after provingthemselves on the track, these ideas havegenerally been accepted by the teams andfans”.

Is motor racing future double linked to an intense co-operation betweendifferent worlds and markets, as in IndyCar,or will the economic breakdown separate us?“The global economic malaise has a largeinfluence on motorsport, especially in the US.Corporate sponsorship is the financiallifeblood of all professional motorsports, andthe slow recovery from the global recessionhas made everyone more conservative. In theUS, the focus on costs has become obsessive.Unfortunately, there has not been universalagreement on how best to control costs, andthis has led to more friction between theparticipants at a time when what we reallyneed is more cooperation”.

Alex Zanardi gained two gold medals at the Paralympic Games in London. How’s the feeling watching an IndyCarlegend like Alex do so well in such adifferent world?“When Alex was racing in the Champ CarSeries, I was working in IMSA (sports and GTcars), and then in the IRL, so I never had theopportunity to meet him personally. Alexhad a large fan base in the US during thosetimes, and he is still very popular here. Eventhough I had not met him, I was a fan andhad a lot of respect for his driving ability.After his accident, I gained even more respectfor him. His positive attitude, his zest forlife, is an inspiration to us all. I’ve since hadthe privilege to meet Alex in Varano, duringone of his visits to the factory. He has areally dynamic personality, an infectioussmile and he really inspires everyone thatmeets him.His victories in the Paralympic Games makeus all proud, as a reminder of what we cando as individuals, and also, through theDallara involvement in the development ofthe equipment that he used for thecompetitions, of what we can accomplish asa team working together”.

ENGINEERINGFOR EVERYBODY

The Dallara IndyCar Factory is a joint-venture of Dallara Automobili andIndyCar Experience. It is locatedapproximately 500 metres south west ofthe historic Indianapolis MotorSpeedway – home of the 500 Miles – andjust over 8 kilometres from Indianapoliscity centre. The new structure, whichcovers over 18.700 m2 and offers thevisitor a complete experience of whatIndyCar means, is the ideal destinationfor all race fans, and for anyone who isnew to the sport.The Dallara Factory features anInteractive Zone consisting of over 1.800

m2 of interactive exhibits dedicated tothe design and technology that go intothe world’s fastest sport. Strollingthrough the gallery where the blueprintsfor the current IndyCar models aredisplayed, or taking a seat in one of theprojection rooms gives you an idea ofthe past, present and future of GianPaolo Dallara and his company. Visitorsto the factory can also experience anadrenalin rush by donning a helmet,taking their place in the two-seaterstreet version of a real IndyCar andaccelerating towards the Speedway. Theycan also get an idea of the technical

specifications of the car, or have theirphotograph taken next to an originalchassis. By using “iRacing” and sittingbehind the wheels of a real IndyCar,guests to the factory can find out whatit’s really like to drive round the famous2 ½ mile oval. Four times a day theDallara factory opens its doors to allowvisitors to see how an IndyCar is builtduring our fascinating guided tours.The IndyCar facility is open from Mondaythrough Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm,and the factory tours run from 11 am, 1pm, 2 pm and 3 pm, again from Mondaythrough Saturday.

THE GP3 2013 MODELIS ALREADY AVAILABLEFOR TEAMS AND DRIVERSAfter two days of testing the new GP3/13 on thetrack at Estoril, Mitch Evans was given the chanceto test the new model on the simulator at Dallara,and, 100 laps later, was able to confirm that thevirtual car corresponds perfectly to the real one.Now teams and drivers can also take advantageof this facility, using it to test a car’s settings,tyres, aerodynamics and mechanics even beforethey take it out onto the track; this means thatthey can be absolutely certain that their resultswill be reproduced on the circuit, and henceenables them to reduce their costs significantly

Mitch Evans, what was the purpose of your sessions onthe simulator?“I tested the new Pirelli tyres for the 2013 season bycompleting hundreds of laps of the Barcelona circuit, aswell as carrying out a series of aerodynamic balance tests.After that, we implemented various mandatoryadjustments and evaluated how the car responded to thecorresponding changes in the mechanical grip”.

What’s it like to sit inside Dallara’s “beast”?“I’d never been here before, but I was made to feel verywelcome, and I was very impressed with the quality ofthe project. I think the simulator represents a very goodstarting point for both Dallara and the organisers whendeveloping a new model, but above all it gives the driversand the teams the chance to work on the car even beforethey get out onto the track”.

Have you also had the chance to try the Red Bullsimulator? How does it differ from the Italian facility?“I’ve had a lot more time on the Red Bull simulator, andI’m very comfortable with that one too, but I have to saythat Dallara’s version is every bit as good as the ones theFormula 1 teams use”.

What’s your overall impression of the 2012 season?“Up and down! The final stages were absolutelyincredible, but there were also difficult moments, forinstance when we had three punctures in threeconsecutive races during a key stage of the championship.The team and I worked really hard to overcome theseproblems in record time”.

You're helping to develop the GP3 car. How did itcompare to the old model during testing at Magny-Cours?“The new GP3 is on an entirely new level. It’s faster, morepowerful and gives much higher levels of performance.It's a lot closer to the GP2. The most significantimprovement is the new engine, it sounds great, and Ithink just that will be enough to make a lot of peoplehappy. It’s a fun car to drive and I think the driverscompeting in the 2013 GP3 championship will appreciatethe developments”.

GP2 and GP3 use two different Dallara cars. What arethe differences between the two from a mechanicalpoint of view?“From a technical point of view, the construction andcomposition of the tyres is radically different. The car isheavier and there’s a significant aerodynamic effect thathelps to increase the speed on curves”.

What was it like working with Italians?“I like Italy and Italians, and I love the food! The otherdriver on my team this year was David Fumanelli, a reallynice lad, and I found the Dallara engineers to be highlycompetent and well-prepared”.

What are your future career plans?“I would like to compete in GP2, it seems like a naturalstep up after two years in GP3, and naturally I’d like towin that title too. However I need to find the right budgetfirst, and that’s not going to be easy”.

Sainz, what do you think of the newDallara F312?«The chassis is very interesting and well-designed. The car is radically different tothe ones I was driving in FormulaRenault 2.0, especially on the fast curveswhere its high aerodynamic loadingmakes it a joy to drive».

Have you had a chance to drive anyother cars produced by the Italianmanufacturer?«Yes, in addition to the current Formula3 model and the old F308, I also drovethe old World Series Renault in testsessions reserved for the top Eurocupdrivers at Alcaniz last year. And I stoodin for Aaro Vainio during GP3 testing atMontmelò at the beginning of 2012 whilehe was taking his school exams».

Which was your favourite?«The GP3 is a fantastic car, but theengine is not at the same level. The

World Series Renault is incredible becausethe driver can feel the power of the engine,and it’s a very demanding drive. I’m in amuch better position to judge the Formula 3though, because I’ve had a lot moreexperience with it, I know how to take it toits limits and I really like it».

Have you ever been to the Dallara factory?«I got quite close during testing at theRiccardo Paletti Autodrome in Varano.Unfortunately I haven't been able to find thetime to visit the headquarters yet; but I will».

Their simulator is one of the most highlythought of in the sector, have you evertried it?«No, Red Bull have their own simulator inMilton Keynes and I tend to work there forlogistical reasons since Carlin is an Englishteam. But I’d love to be able to compare thetwo systems in the future».

Engineer Dallara receivesthe “Barsanti e Matteucci”award fromPresident GaspaA WINNING

“I am not seduced by the knowledge ofthe learned, nor do I fear the power ofthe great, truth and justice dominatemy will”: these are the words of FatherEugenio Barsanti, a Piarist monk bornin Pietrsanta in 1821, and co-inventorof the internal combustion enginetogether with the engineer from Lucca,Felice Matteucci.In order to honour them, the beautifultown of Pietrasanta, with its rich artisticand historical heritage (the greatMichelangelo spent time here and todayit is one of Fernando Botero’s favouriteresidences) founded the “InternationalBarsanti and Matteucci Award”, whichin this, its XIII edition, was presented toEngineer Gian Paolo Dallara.The purpose of the award, which is oneof the most important annual events inPietrasanta, is recognise contributionsto continued research into, andimprovement of, motor vehicles, both atnational and international level, and itspast recipients include such illustriousfigures as: Cav. (Sir) Giorgetto Giugiaro(President of Italdesign Giugiaro), Prof.Gerhard Ertl (Nobel Prize for Chemistry),Engineer Massimo Lucchesini (GeneralManager Alenia Aermacchi) andCommander Maurizio Cheli (Astronautand Chief Test Pilot on EF2000) etc.The award ceremony, which was co-hosted by the Viareggio Versilia RotaryClub, who inaugurated the Award, issponsored by the seven local councils ofthe Versilia area, the Province of Luccaand the Tuscan Regional government, aswell as enjoying the support of thePresident of the Republic.Gian Paolo Dallara was presented withthe award by the rotarian PieroMaremmani, on 27th October inPietrasanta Theatre. The event wasattended Engineer Stefano Iacoponi, exPresident of the FIAT Research Centreand member of the Award scientificcommittee, Domenico Lombardi, themayor of Pietrasanta, Francesco Gaspa,the new president of the Awardcommittee, and Fabrizio Papi, Presidentof the Viareggio Versilia Rotary Club.

Engineer Dallara was also presentedwith the President of the Republic’sbronze medal as an example of Italianingenuity capable of “conquering” theworld. Gian Paolo Dallara was clearlymoved by the recognition he received:“when Engineer Iacopini told me about

the award – he revealed – I felt that,after this, anything else would havebeen superfluous”.The ceremony concluded with aninformal interview with the sportsjournalist, Guido Schittone, whoretraced the various phases of theEngineer’s life, from the early days atFerrari and the foundation of his owncompany, right up to the present day,and such current themes as reducingpollution and the role played in thisprocess by new forms of energy and theaerodynamic efficiency of the cars.Dallara offered a message of hope andoptimism: “My company’s growth hasbeen a gradual process, and has alwaysbeen fuelled enthusiasm and a drivetowards the future, which is why wecontinue to invest in young people, whoI believe are extremely well-preparedfor, and positive about the future.”But there’s also a private side toEngineer Dallara, who likes nothingbetter than game of cards with his oldfriends in his local bar of an evening,and who is a passionate fan of ParmaFootball Club: “I took my wife to agame once - he said - but she was soembarrassed when I suddenly turnedinto a fanatical football supporter thatshe vowed never to come again. To behonest I’m quite a mild man, but whenI’m at the ground my passion takesover, fortunately it’s something I sharewith my daughter!”

The interview was followed by aselection of classical music by Verdi andPuccini, including a very special guestin the person of the Tuscan tenor,Andrea Bocelli.In addition, four famous Dallara carswere put on display in the Pietrasantatown square for three days: the Formula3 that Guido Pardini drove to Dallara’sfirst Italian championship win in 1980,the 2008 Team BVM Formula 3 model,the Italian team’s 1988 Formula 1 car,and the most successful IndyCar in thehistory of Indy racing, with sevenIndianapolis 500 victories, which wasfirst produced in 2003 and used by theteams until 2011.Also in Pietrasanta, a public exhibitionentitled “Gian Paolo Dallara: fromVarano to Indianapolis” was on displayin the central Palazzo Panichi facing thePiazza Duomo, from 27th October until11th November, and attracted around

1,200 visitors. The exhibition wasdivided into four rooms: the firstdedicated to the life of Gian PaoloDallara, the Dallara company and thesuccesses achieved over 40 years ofhistory; the second was dedicated toinnovation, concentrating on thesimulator and aerodynamics; the thirdroom was dedicated to design, researchand development, and collaborationwith the automotive sector; while thelast was dedicated to compositematerials, safety design (structuralanalysis and crash tests) andproduction.In addition to the display panels, therooms also featured video contentillustrating the techniques used toprocess composite materials, the drivingsimulator, the wind tunnel and theposter-rig. A charming initiative, in an evocativeItalian cultural and historical setting,that did a great deal to promote thepassion and technical excellence thatare a by-word at Dallara and bring themto a wider audience.
