IN THE ZonE
Hello USAG Red Cloud and Area I
Community Members.
Can you believe it? We're already
hitting the Christmas and New Years Eve
Season!!!
Its a great time of the year to spend
with family and celebrate together;
unfortunately, its not the case with many
of our unaccompanied Military and Civilian
members here at Area I. As much as it is a glorious time of the
year, it can also be a very diffi cult time of the year for many
spending it alone, and for many, spending it alone for the fi rst
time. The Army is a big family and we look out for each other
during this time of the year. Please be extra vigilant and watch for
lonely and/or depressed symptoms from our Battle Buddies. Reach
out to them, invite them to your home, get them involved with
FMWR events, or our ACS support team. More importantly, be
there for them and remind them that we/you are their extended
family away from family at home!!!
With that said, FMWR has a lot in store for you during the
month of December SO PLEASE peruse the Zone and get the
latest and greatest with Whats Happening in Area I! Lots of
Christmas Specials and of course our New Years kick it into 2014
celebrations!!
I wish you a very Merry Christmas and an Awesome New Year
2014 see you out and about and dont forget the Christmas
Tree Lighting Ceremonies on the following days Camp Stanley
December 2nd, Camp Casey December 3rd and Camp Red Cloud
on December 16th. The Zone has the full details for you!

The USAG-RC and Area 1 Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) Department invites
the community to a Christmas Dinner with Santa and free Christmas presents on December 24, 2013 at
Camp Red Cloud Mitchells Club. This event marks a timeless tradition for Soldiers and Civilian families
and friends, including Korean employees and their families, to share a night of holiday music and a
sumptuous dinner buffet commemorating this Christmas season.
Its hard, especially for Soldiers who are away from their families for the fi rst time. But we at Family
and MWR want them to know that were here for them, says Mitchells Club Manager Mark Onstad.
Were reaching out to leaders to pass the word, letting Soldiers know they dont have to be alone
in their barracks or their apartments this Christmas Eve and encouraging them to join their extended
family for this special Christmas event at Mitchells Club, Onstad says.
As an added Christmas treat, everyone, adults and children, will receive a very special Christmas
present, wrapped with tender loving care and presented by Santa himself, courtesy of the USAG Red
Cloud/Area l FMWR Department.
We want to do something special for Soldiers, Katusas, U.S. and Korean civilian employees and their
family members, so in addition to Santa and the awesome presents hell be giving away, the chef and I
are working a little kitchen magic for Christmas dinner. This will truly be a Christmas Eve to remember
for everyone who attends," Onstad says.
And what a dinner it will be, complete with roast turkey, smoked ham, BBQ Ribs, bread dressing,
mashed potatoes with gravy, rice, sweet yams, green bean casserole, buttered corn, salad bar, seasonal
breads & rolls, eggnog, and a variety of pies and desserts to satisfy anyones sweet tooth.
For most people Christmas is normally a joyous occasion, but for those spending it far away from
home it can be a lonely, stressful time. Why not enjoy Christmas Eve with friends at Mitchells and take
advantage of this very special treat consisting of good food, live holiday music, a free Christmas present
and framed photo with Santa with your dinner buffet purchase. See you there.

DMZ Tour Guidelines
- When viewing the Conference Room, do not touch any equipment belonging to North Korea.
- Do not speak with, make any gesture toward, approach or respond to personnel from the other side.
- Military or other offi cial considerations may prevent entry into the JSA.
- Casual clothes, such as ripped jeans, sleeveless shirts, miniskirts, short pants, military clothes, and sandal/slippers are not permitted during the tour.
- Shaggy or unkempt hair is not allowed.
- Children under 10 years of age are not allowed.
The Joint Security Area (JSA)The JSA resembles a square measuring about 800
meters across. After the Armistice Agreement was
signed, the JSA became a neutral location where
guards from both sides were allowed to move about
freely. It was the only place in the Demilitarized Zone
(DMZ) where the Military Demarcation Line (MDL)
was originally not clearly marked.
That changed after North Korean guards murdered
two United Nations Command (UNC) offi cers with
axes on August 18, 1976. After the Ax Murder
Incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA, and
that marking system continues until today.
The only place where border crossings are allowed
is inside the conference buildings of the Military
Armistice Commission (MAC). The MDL in the JSA is
marked with one hundred and twenty six one-meter
high white stakes at 10 meter intervals. Throughout
the rest of the DMZ, the boundary is marked with
MDL markers. Each side owns six guard posts in the
JSA and no more than thirty fi ve armed guards can
be present on each side.
The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations
between the North and South. A variety of political
and economic issues, cultural conferences and Red
Cross meetings are held in the JSA.
Observation Post (OP) DoraAs the northernmost observatory in South Korea,
OP Dora is located within the DMZ and provides the
closest view of North Korea. Propaganda Village
and Farmland of North Korea lay in view just ahead
as do some areas of Gaeseong. The Gaeseong
Industrial Complex and a bronze statue of Kim Il
Sung can be seen through a telescope.
DMZ Third Tunnel The Third Tunnel was discovered 52 km away from
Seoul in the administrative district of Paju in 1978.
It is 1,635 meters in length, 2 meters in width and 2
meters in height. The tunnels size would allow an
army of thirty thousand fully-armed North Korean
Soldiers to pass through within an hour.
The Third Tunnel is the largest one discovered so
far, indicating North Koreas desire to invade Seoul
during that time.

Cath is more than a little anxious about starting
college. Its hard living apart from her twin sister,
Wren, for the fi rst time ever, and even harder
when Wren seems so excited about it. Everyone
around Cath seems to be confi dent and capable,
from her intimidating roommate to all the fellow
English majors whose cool sophistication she feels
hard-pressed to emulate.
So Cath retreats to the safe haven of her
imagination. Shes an ardent devotee of the Simon
Snow book and movie series (a thinly veiled riff
on Harry Potter), and over the past few years her
fanfi ction set in that world has amassed an avid
BooKS RecommendedReadingfollowing of its own. But as school assignments
and outside stresses begin to crowd her time,
even that beloved escape begins to feel like yet
another hungry subject demanding constant
attention.
Meanwhile, academic setbacks are making her
question if shes on the right track. She worries
about Wren, whose drinking binges are reaching
a troubling frequency. She worries about her dad,
whose bipolar tendencies she fears will take over
now that hes on his own. And she worries about
Levi, her roommates boyfriend, whose reassuring
friendliness and heart-twisting smile is becoming
more precious to her than she can admit.
Cath is a great character, just as introverted,
awkward and nerdy as she is intelligent and witty,
more used to navigating imagined worlds than
actual ones. Refreshingly, these traits are not
derided and suppressed, but refi ned and even
celebrated over the course of this coming-of-age
tale. Yes, Cath will come to realize that real life
can hold its own magic but, reassuringly, she
doesnt gain this at the expense of her imaginary
adventures, but rather by learning to fi nd the
right balance of both.

GUARD YOUR IDENTITY
We know we should be aware of identity theft,
but not all of us take steps to be safe. So says a
news release put out by Experian, one of the big
three credit-reporting agencies.
A survey done by Experian showed that:
Most of us (93 percent) know that identity
theft is a big problem. A smaller number (61
percent) know it would not be hard for someone
to steal their identity, and 67 percent are
concerned it might happen to them.
While the vast majority do secure their digital
information, 55 percent dont always check to
see if a website is secure when shopping online.
(Look for the https in the sites address.) Worse, 63
percent dont have a separate password for each
online account. Translation: We know what we
should be doing to stay protected online, but we
dont always do it.
When we shop online, 57 percent of us
dont always type in the name of the site
were going to. Instead we click on links,
opening us to the risk that were going to
a fraudulent site that only looks like our
destination site a site thats designed to
take our personal information.
Computers and going online arent
our only downfalls. Nearly half of
us never use a password to lock our
smartphone or tablet. Identity thieves
can use the information they fi nd in a
stolen phone or tablet, as well as run
up bills on our accounts.
Only one in three of us stays
secure on social-networking sites
such as Twitter and Facebook,
willingly giving too much
information online: date of birth,
email address or educational
background. Identity thieves can use that
information.
The big item our Social Security number
isnt guarded at all times. We willingly put it on
medical forms (where do those forms end up?) or
job applications (they dont need it unless youre
hired), and we even carry the card in our wallet
where it can be stolen and sold.
During the holidays its especially important
to safeguard personal information. Thieves will
be on the lookout for distracted shoppers who
arent vigilant about walking with an open purse,
stumble onto fraudulent websites for online
shopping or use unsecured mobile phones to
shop.

BUDGETING FOR THE HOLIDAYS
It's the time of year for gift giving, entertaining, holiday parties, and for manyoverspending and
nancial stress. This year, enjoy the season without letting holiday spending get the better of you; the tips
and tools below will help. Setting a realistic holiday budget and making sure to stick to it is the rst step
to enjoying a more affordable and less stressful season. Here are a few ways to handle gift giving and
celebrations without breaking the bank:
1. Set Your BudgetThe best place to start making a holiday budget is to look at your spending during last year's holiday
season. In what areas did you spend more than planned? Next, make a list of the holiday purchases
and events you plan to spend money on this year. Consider all of your major spending categories: gifts,
entertaining, meals, and travelthen estimate how much you can afford to spend in each category. Knowing
your spending goals long beforehand will help you stay on track fi nancially as the season heats up. You
can access your Holiday Budget Calculator at: http://www.practicalmoneyskills.com/calculators/calculate/
yourHolidayBudget.php?calcCategory=budget
2. Get CreativeOne great way to save money and wow friends and families is
to get creative. Store-bought gifts are great, but homemade
gifts are often more meaningful and most recipients truly
appreciate your time and effort. Ideas for creative gift
projects are plentiful online such as this one: http://

If you like the idea of a personal touch and
affordability but don't have the time or skill to
make gifts yourself, the ultimate marketplace for
homemade gifts is at: http://www.etsy.com where
you can fi nd crafty items from over 200,000
sellers.

3. Join TogetherInstead of excessively spending on each other this year, join together
with family members to help those who may be less fortunate. Online
opportunities are easy to find, and there are several in the article
Helping Others When Money Is Tight at: http://www.practicalmoneyskills.

contributions_112108.php Other opportunities for online giving can be
found at Oxfam International on: http://www.oxfam.org/ or ACCION at:

4. Travel WiselyIf you plan on traveling, take some time to determine how much it will
cost you with a Holiday Travel Planner at: http://www.practicalmoneyskills.

and don't forget these holiday travel planning tips at: http://www.

5. Entertain for LessHolidays are a wonderful time to entertain, but a little planning and
budgeting can help you avoid financial headaches. Consider using a Holiday
Entertainment Planner such as this: http://www.practicalmoneyskills.com/

help you ensure a fun event that won't tax you financially. Also check out

Adjusting to life in Korea can be a daunting experience for many newcomers, but luckily for them the
U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area l Army Community Service (ACS) offi ce at Camp Casey has a special
program available designed to help with the transition process.
Shortly after arriving in country, newcomers, Soldiers, Family members, civilian personnel and their
families soon realize the many differences between living in South Korea and the U.S., not the least of
which are the language barrier, driving conditions, variety of food and other cultural differences that make
living here interesting and in most cases fun.
But despite these major differences, everyone, whether visiting Korea for the fi rst time or returning for
another tour, can still enjoy their time in Korea and, more specifi cally, their time in the Area l community.
And thats where the ACS Community Newcomers Orientation, offered on the 3rd Monday of every
month at the Camp Casey ACS, can help. The orientation is open to all USFK I.D. card-holders, including
family members and active duty personnel.
The class involves a number of representatives from various departments and organizations within the
Area l community, including subject matter experts from Camp Casey, Camp Red Cloud, and Camp Stanley,
each giving attendees the latest information about their respective activity or program along with tips and
timely advice to help make the transition to Area l easier and more comfortable. Returning members also
benefi t from the class with new, updated information regarding changes in policies, programs or facilities
since their last assignment in country.

-
The day long class begins at 8:30 a.m. with welcoming
remarks from either the Casey Garrison Commander or his
appointed representative, who explain the big picture
that encompasses Area l, including the many various
tenant commands and units that call Area l home.
The Newcomers Orientation is designed to give
newcomers, and anyone returning to Korea for a
second or third tour, the latest, most up-to-date
information about what they can expect during
their tour here, says orientation coordinator Mark
Hagelin, ACS Information Referral and Follow-up
Program Manager.
The class is open to everyone and most folks leave
here with a much better understanding of what they
can expect during their time here. We get compliments
all the time from people who complete the class, telling
us how much they learned in such a short time. Its important
information that they can use on a daily basis. Much of the

information they receive here they cant
get anywhere else, so this class is a
great benefi t to military and civilians
alike, Hagelin says.
A number of subject matter
representatives, including those from
the Legal Offi ce, Non-combatant
Evacuation Operation (NEO), Troop
Medical Clinic, TRICARE, Army
Substance Abuse Program (ASAP),
American Red Cross, Legal Offi ce
and a host of other key partners that
comprise the Area l community present
their programs and answer questions from
attendees.
Its not unusual to hear someone who
attended the briefi ng say later that they thought
they already knew most of the information, only to
discover during the class that they either had it wrong
or didnt know the information in the fi rst place. This is
especially true with attendees who have been here for several
months and thought they knew everything there is to know about Area
l, Hagelin stated.
Military spouses in particular are always impressed with the orientation because they get accurate
and timely information fi rst-hand and can ask questions from the subject matter experts. They really
appreciate that, he says.
Following the classroom portion of the orientation attendees participate in a four-hour tour of the
area that focuses on how to get around in the off-base community using public transportation. The tour
includes a short walk to the Bosan Subway Station near the Camp Casey Main Gate where attendees
are given hands on training on the use of the automated ticket machines and a brief orientation of the
subway system in general.
Once everyone is familiar with the basics, they board the subway bound for Uijeongbu Station
(transportation paid by ACS), the hub for local shopping and dining in Area l, where they visit the
popular Shinsaegae Department complex and underground shopping area before having lunch
(attendees pay for their meal) at any one of the many local restaurants available.
This part of the orientation is especially popular with attendees. Most of them have never used public
transportation here because it can be confusing if youve never tried it before. Once they see how easy
and effi cient it is to get around in Korea, they feel much more comfortable using the system, Hagelin
states.
The Newcomers Orientation class is available once a month and Hagelin says everyone is welcome to
sign up, no matter if youre new to Korea or if youve been here before.
Theres always something new and interesting to be gained from attending the class, he says.

Kaitlyn West
Newcomer to Korea and new Army
wife Kaitlyn West, who hails from
Florida, attended a recent Newcomers
Orientation Brief and had this to say
about her experience:
ITZ: Where were you stationed before arriving in Korea?
West: This is my fi rst time being a military spouse. I recently got married and my husband is in school right now.
ITZ: Are you command sponsored?
West: No.
ITZ: How did you hear about the Newcomers Orientation Brief?
West: I heard about it on Facebook and Ive been to the ACS Offi ce once before and saw the notice about it.
ITZ: So you decided to just show up and see what its all about?
West: Yeah. With me being new to the Army in general, I fi gured it would be good information to know.
ITZ: Was there anything in the class that you already knew?
West: I went through the NEO process before and thought I was familiar with that a little bit, but now I know much more about it. I had heard about some of the other programs, but not in such detail. I also was happy to hear about the volunteering program too.
ITZ: Being a new spouse and new to Korea and the Army, what were your major concerns about coming to Korea?
West: The language barrier, for one. I really didnt know what to expect. The time difference was an issue until I got the hang of it. I kept calling family members back in the States and waking them up in the middle of the night. Once I accidently sent a text message at the wrong time.
ITZ: What is the most diffi cult part of living here versus the States?
West: Knowing where to go for different things. The food too. Not knowing what things are. Im generally not a picky eater, but at least I would like to know what Im eating.
ITZ: Anything else you would like to mention about your time in Korea?
West: Yes. I defi nitely enjoy being here. Its very interesting. Some people I know complain there is nothing to do here, but I think there is. Its really interesting and Im happy to be here.
