Dongdaemun/Namdaemun

For those who want to be immersed in

Korean culture, the best places to go are the

shopping markets. The two most popular

markets, Dongdaemun (“East Gate”) and

Namdaemun (“South Gate”), are best known

for their low prices, but for a more upscale feel,

visitors may want to first explore Doota, one of

the many trendy department stores located in

Dongdaemun filled with clothes, accessories

and coffee shops. Each shop in Doota is its

own store, although there are no clear barriers

between any of the shops. First-time visitors

may be overwhelmed by the number of

stores in a single area, especially if they’re

used to American department stores.

“I wasn’t expecting so many stores on one

floor,” said first-time visitor Linda Maldonado.

“The surprising part is that each store is its

own individual shop and not a part of one

big shop. It can be a little overwhelming.”

Once you move away from the

department stores, head into the markets.

The market offers the same variety of

clothes and accessories as the department

stores do, but at much lower prices.

The streets never

truly sleep in the

most popular

shopping districts in

seoul. They come to life

from the earliest hours of

the morning to the latest

hours of the night. rain

or shine, people from all

around the world gather

together to do the one

thing they love: shopping.

39IN THE ZONE

Page 40: In the Zone August

Here, customers are always seen

negotiating with store owners for the

best deals they can get. For those who

have never bargained with a Korean

vendor before, it can be intimidating,

but for others, it presents the

opportunity to fully experience Korean

culture.

“I love to bargain,” Maldonado states.

“It’s thrilling to see whether or not you

can actually get a good bargain on

a quality item, especially since in the

United States you don’t have that option.”

Namdaemun, located at Hwe Hyeon

station four subway stops away from

Dongdaemun, also offers a unique

shopping experience, although most of

the shops are located outside. Owners

call out to shoppers, advertising their low

prices and high-quality items as shoppers

browse through their selection. The smell

of food from the street vendors fills the

streets as people shop.

When compared to Dongdaemun,

Namdaemun lacks the department stores

and fancy cafes, but it definitely does not

lack culture. Products line every inch of

space available, and many shops do not have

a door that separates it from the outside

world, much like the stores in Doota.

“It’s interesting to see shops that are so

open to the public,” commented Maldonado.

No matter the weather, shoppers can always

find a good bargain at either of the markets.

Dongdaemun is known for its fashionable

clothing stores, while Namdaemun is best

known for its accessories.

MyeongdongFor those who love the night life, there

is no better spot that Myeongdong. Located three stops away from Dongdaemun, all of Myeongdong’s shops light up the streets as shoppers from all around the world gather in the center of Seoul to experience all that Myeongdong has to offer.

As you walk down the crowded streets, workers try to lure customers in by offering samples of their products. Often

multi-lingual and sometimes costumed, these workers come from different nations, but perhaps the most common

nationalities are Chinese and Japanese.“At first, Myeongdong just seemed to

be like any other city with a lot of people, but as I went in deeper, I started noticing slight differences that set Myeongdong apart from all the other cities I’ve visited,” Maldonado said.

40 Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine

Page 41: In the Zone August

“There are

so many different people here, and they’re all so

fashionable. I love watching the people and seeing

all the different trends.

“The subway system and the number of cafes

remind me of Paris, but the shopping districts and all

the beautiful mountains in the background remind of

Monterrey, Mexico. It’s amazing how much culture comes

together in one area,” Maldonado noted after a bit of

exploring.

Myeongdong offers another benefit that attracts

many visitors each day: good food. Home to hundreds of

restaurants, Myeongdong caters to everybody’s tastes with its

fast food and international restaurants, cafes, dessert shops and

street vendors. After a long day of shopping, sitting down at a

café or restaurant is the perfect way to relax.

For those interested in going shopping in Seoul, Amanda Reiff,

a Korean-American who has lived in Korea for over a decade, offers

some sound advice.

“Go with a local or take a Korean friend. Some owners will set a price

higher for foreigners than locals, so always be prepared to bargain with

them. Also, always carry won and give the owners the exact price that

you ask for. It can be embarrassing to bargain for a lower price and then

hand them a big bill,” she says.

Shopping in Korea provides

foreigners with a unique

opportunity to fully engage

in Korean culture as well

as enjoy different fashions

than those back home. If

you’re interested in going

to any of these shopping

districts, Dongdaemun,

Namdaemun (Hwe Hyeon)

and Myeongdong can

all be found on line 4 of

the subway system. For

further reference, check

out the subway map

located on page 74. Z

Summer is generally a high PCS season for military personnel, and if you have a Family Member enrolled in EFMP, you don’t want to wait until the last minute to update your Family Member’s enrollment. If you do, you risk delaying or cancelling your PCS. This is a distressing situation for a Soldier to be in as he or she is preparing to PCS. It’s not uncommon to hear about Soldiers who find out their assignment was cancelled due to incomplete EFMP paperwork.

All Soldiers are at risk of delaying or cancelling their PCS if at least one of their dependents, adult or child, is enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program and that enrollment has expired or is not up-to-date.

Army-wide, there are about 20,000 Soldiers with expired or not up-to-date EFMP enrollments. A person's EFMP enrollment may expire for several reasons: a Soldier gets divorced and forgets to disenroll their spouse; a child outgrows a condition and the parents forget the child was ever enrolled; a previously enrolled child has grown up and moved away.

According to Installation Management Command's web site, an Exceptional Family Member is a dependent of any age with a disorder that requires special treatment, therapy, education, training or counseling. Enrollment is mandatory and must be updated every three years or when there are significant changes in the dependent's condition.

However, even if a dependent leaves or no longer needs services, the EFMP enrollment remains a red flag on the soldier's file. Soldiers will need to show the EFMP medical official documentation of the new status, such as a divorce decree, child custody order or a birth certificate showing the child has matured past the age of allowable Army medical coverage. If a child no longer needs specialized services, the specialist who determined that status will need to provide an official statement.

Please contact your local EFMP Manager at 730-3107/6552 for assistance in navigating through this process.

Leave it to the scammers to find a way around the law. In this case, they’ve discovered a way to separate desperate homeowners from their money in a new wrinkle on mortgage scams.

Homeowners across the country have been receiving letters in the mail about mortgage “mass joinder” lawsuits. These letters promise to bring mortgage companies to their knees in courts of law and to get mortgages modified, bringing relief to the homeowners who are on the verge of foreclosure. These letters are personalized with the name of the homeowner and the mortgage company, as well as the amount of the loan. They claim to be able to stop foreclosures, get payments reduced and even get compensation.

Naturally, huge upfront fees are demanded — $5,000 in most cases.

Last fall, the Federal Trade Commission tried to address consumer mortgage scams with the Mortgage Assistance Relief Services Rule. The new ruling says that 1) companies cannot demand fees until the homeowner has in hand a document from the lender that outlines an acceptable written offer; 2) the company must tell the homeowner what happens if they stop paying the mortgage; 3) consumers must be told that they don’t have to accept any offers (and don’t have to pay the fees if they reject any offer the company

has negotiated); 4) the fee has to be disclosed, and 5) the company must disclose that it’s not part of the government.

Attorneys are exempt from the rule if they practice law, have a license in the state where the consumer lives or the property is, and comply with their state laws. Additionally, they have to put fees paid to them in a special client account.

The scammers’ workaround of the new ruling? They’re not actually offering mortgage modification help. They’re only offering to sue, using attorneys, and they’re doing it on an hourly basis.

If you’re finding it hard to pay your mortgage, contact your lender first. They don’t want your house back. Most of them want only to help you find a way to pay the debt and will try to work something out.

If you receive one of those mass joinder letters, let your local Better Business Bureau and the FTC know so they’re aware that the companies are working in your area.

WARRIOR COUNTRyCROSSWORD

Reviewed by Ealish Waddell

Novels that take place in charming little Irish towns usually

promise (or threaten) to be fluffy reads packed with delicious

but relatively empty calories. Thankfully, "Semi-Sweet" lives up

to his name: This novel has its sugary moments, but there are

plenty more that are tart, bitter and even decidedly salty,

resulting in a tasty story that also has actual depth. We open

with Hannah being dumped by her boyfriend Patrick for

another woman on the eve of the long-awaited opening of

her new bakery. Stricken, Hannah throws herself bodily into

making "Cupcakes on the Corner" a commercial success,

even while she feels like she's falling apart internally. But just

when you're expecting a typical tale of a woman wronged,

we expand our view to glimpse the thoughts of several other

town residents. Leah, Patrick's other woman, is pregnant

with his child and worried he will stray again; her glamorous,

amoral friend Nora wants to be the one to make him do it.

Leah's proud mother and Hannah's protective one clash in a

series of frigid drawing-room encounters. Hannah's best

friend, Adam, finds himself increasingly obsessed with a

mysterious local musician. Family friend Alice struggles

silently to cope with her husband's drinking. And more than

one visitor to the bakery may have more than just his sweet

tooth on his mind. A romantic tale, and yet more than

simply that, Meaney's narrative encompasses the convoluted

lives of an entire community, both their individual loves and

fears and the intricacies of how their days constantly

intertwine. With raw and sometimes heartbreaking honesty,

each character uniquely demonstrates that through both

unbearable pain and unexpected joy, life always goes on,

and hope can be found in the most surprising of places.
