The annual distribu-tion of some backpacks,filled with school sup-plies, for students whowill attend Russell’sSimpson andBickerdyke ElementarySchools was scheduledto be conducted duringthe SES and BESenrollment, Aug. 14 atthe BES gymnasium.
Russell’s SunriseKiwanis Club sponsoredthe backpacks whichwere provided forSimpson Elementarystudents in kindergartenthrough second grade.Russell’s Black GoldChapter of PheasantsForever sponsored thebackpacks provided toBickerdyke Elementarystudents in thirdthrough fifth grades.
Jamie Malone, amember of the SunriseKiwanis Club, said theclub made 50 backpacksavailable this year. Ofthe 50 backpacks, 20were provided forkindergarten students;15 for first grade stu-
dents; and 15 for sec-ond grade students.Scott Young, a memberof the Black GoldPheasants ForeverChapter, said the chap-ter provided a total of36 backpacks, 12 for
each grade level atBickerdyke ElementarySchool.
Each backpack wasfilled with the specificschool supplies requiredby its designated gradelevel.
More than 60 carscruised in to participatein the 3rd AnnualHerzogfest Car Show inVictoria Aug. 11.
Nestled under the treesin the city park, specta-tors and participants hadit “made in the shade.”However, some car enthu-siast were looking forsunshine.
Roger and RaileenRamsey, Russell, hadtheir 1974 AMC AMXJavelin on display.
“We told them wewanted a place in thesun,” Raileen Ramseysaid. “The car has holo-graphic paint, and reallyshows off the best in thesunshine.”
The Javelin is a projectvehicle. They found it ina barn, resting on its hubs10 or 12 years ago. It wastotally dismantled,according to RogerRamsey.
Although they did nottake home a trophy fromthis show, they said theywere just happy to partic-ipate.
“We do all of our ownwork,” Roger Ramseysaid. “And there aren’tmany (car) shows thathave an AmericanMotors class. They aregetting to be pretty rare.”
John Weber, Victoria,who coordinated the
event said he was pleasedwith the turnout.
“We have consistentlyhad more than 60 cars inthe show for the last threeyears,” Weber said. “Thisis just a fun time foreveryone.”
Bob Schonthaler,Hays, took Best of Showwith his 1930 Ford ModelA;
Dennis Wellbrock,Lakewood, Colo., earnedthe Best Paint award withhis 1936 Ford;
Doug Marrs, Hays,had the Best Engine inhis 1934 Ford;
Best Interior went toGary McClanahan,WaKeeney, for his 1947Plymouth convertible;
The 1959 ChevyImpala belonging to AllenLeiker, was the Best GMvehicle;
The Best MOPARbelonged to Paul Simpson- Hays, a 1969 DodgeCharger;
Martha Boardmanearned the Best Fordhonor with her 1969Mach 1.
