Welcome to CHAMP Camp

I wish I could find a new way to say we had a great and exciting year! It seems like that is the same message from last year but truly represents our experi-ence in 2009.

In 2009 we added five new, energetic board members. We are excited about the experience and enthusiasm each of these people brings to our organization.

In a year when many other organizations were finding their special events to not be profitable, we were able to meet our goal of raising $50,000 which helps support our long range plan of offering CHAMP Camp for 2 weeks a summer. All due to our generous friends who are committed to making this opportunity available to a very special population of children.

We welcomed 25 campers to our week of camp in June. This represented a 138% increase over participation in 2008. Many of our returning counselors of-fered their time again to make this years camp a huge success, as we also welcomed a large number of new counselors to the CHAMP Camp family. You will see pictures from last year’s camp. Make sure you take a moment to look at the Soap Box Derby cars! I am proud that our program committee is able to bring these new experiences each year for our campers.

2010 is going to be exciting as well. We will celebrate our 20th year of CHAMP camp. What started as a small dream with five campers continues to grow and now requires planning throughout the year to insure that we don’t turn any potential camper away. Please look for CHAMP Camp email newsletters and updates to know how and when to join our celebrations throughout the year.

We could not do all of this without the support of you, our Champ Camp friends. Whether you have given of yourself financially or through your donation of time and talent, we are grateful that you are a part of the CHAMP Camp family and we look forward to celebrating our 20 years of service with you in 2010. Mission Statement

We believe in the limitless potential of the human spirit. CHAMP Camp provides extraordinary opportunities for recreation, socialization, education, and public awareness.

Our outdoor activities and enrichment experiences encourage challenge and success, and foster tremendous self-esteem and

independence for children and adolescents with tracheostomies and those requiring technological respiratory assistance. Additionally, we offer emotional support and broaden the insight of families and friends.

We celebrate the enthusiasm and energy of others who share our ideals and philosophy; and we promote

the growth and understanding of this unique and exceptional population.

Philosophy

CHAMP Camp is not a physical place, but a community where children who are technologically-assisted experience the wonder, beauty and challenge of the outdoors. The American Camping Association (ACA) accredits our program, and we utilize facilities that adhere to site regulations as outlined by the ACA. CHAMP Camp is a community where campers and counselors think of each other first; giving and receiving from each other; and supporting each other in our feelings and experiences. It is a community where health care professionals become counselors, modeling their love of the experience; allowing kids to be kids; and making medical arrangements as to not compromise the adventure and enjoyment of camp. It is a community rich with personal expression, individual differences, and opportunities to grow and succeed physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially, and

“discover one’s place in the sun.”

CHAMP CAMP 2009—HIGHLIGHTS

It was a hot week! But, 25 campers and 68 counselors/staff braved the temperatures for an incredible week of camp. New friend-ships, broken records—even our first soap box derby! Following you will find some of the highlights of the week. NEW CAMPERS—Nine families decided to trust us with their child for the first time this year which increased our total number of campers by 138% over 2008. We are grateful for their faith in us and look forward to many more camping experiences with:

AND GRADUATE CAMPERS—Four of our friends celebrated their last year at camp with us. Clare and Keith were both decanulated this year (had their trach removed), Elisabeth and Rachel have both graduated and are on to new things. We wish them all well and hope that they will continue as part of the CHAMP Camp family. In fact, Keith has joined the organization as the newest member of the program committee to assist in planning from a camper perspective!

BREAKING RECORDS AND SETTING RECORDS - To celebrate her last year at CHAMP Camp, Rachel broke the standing record for largest fish which was held by Tony. Not bad for a girl who doesn’t like to fish! Three board members visited camp this year and all three tackled the climbing tower! CHAMP Camp board members believe in full participation! We also welcomed Nelson Stewart, father of NASCAR Driver Tony Stewart, who brought one of Tony’s midget cars for the kids to preview before our own Soap Box Derby Race. Counselors served as the engine of these amazing cars to push our campers around the track. Some drove, some just hung out, but everyone had a great time. Kudos to our counselors and visitors who persevered through the hottest day of camp to provide this unique experience!
