Sunday, August 26 KICK OFF SUNDAY Sunday School 9:15 a.m. Worship 10:30 a.m. “Them” 2 Kings 6:8-23 Sunday, September 2 Does It Matter? FAITH Hebrews 11:1-13 Sunday, September 9 Does It Matter? TRUTH Romans 1:18-20

one thing God has given us but so are our houses, fami-lies, friends, neighborhoods, abilities, experiences, and even time itself. When we begin to see everything we have as a gift from God, we begin to see that we don't own any of it. We are simply the ones charged by God with using His stuff as He would want us to. These same sermons have appealed to our sense of duty when it comes to our giving. We give because we "should" or because "we owe it to God." This is where our Tithing language comes from - we owe God 10% of our money, with the false impli-cation that the rest is ours to use as we wish. Instead, stewardship is about reflect-ing the character of God, be-ing more Godly, by living life generously. When we be-come like God in this area, we become generous peo-ple, who desire to give rather than hoard or shop or gam-ble God's gifts away. So as we consider how we as a church can Grow through our stewardship, consider God's generosity. Can we give freely and sacri-ficially to others, to God's mission, to our church, and to each other as a means of discipleship? Can we try to break the hold money has on us by giving 1% more away this year than we did last year? Can we be the source of God's blessing for others rather than seeking that blessing for ourselves?

September Sermon Series “Does it Matter?”

Our society is on a constant search to find out what really matters. truth, beliefs, sin, prayer… do any of these really matter in the long run? We’ll explore what the bible says about these this month. Join us every Sunday at 10:30 am to find out.

School

The Worship Committee invites you to consider

participating on a Liturgical Arts Team to help provide

purposeful and meaningful visual arts and dramas in

our church. For more information contact Alicia Reese

at [email protected].

IN AUGUST!

Please join us in Adult Sunday School this fall for a series on Strengthening Our Faith. There are questions that keep people from respond-ing to Christ: Is there a God? Did Jesus really rise from the dead? Why does God allow evil and suffering? Is organized religion harmful? We Chris-tians often don't know how to address these questions and might even harbor our own doubts from them. This series will address these questions head-on to help us to have confidence in our faith and be pre-pared to explain it to others in winsome and non-confrontational ways. We will all meet together in the Sanctu-ary at 9:15 a.m. on Kickoff Sunday, August 26th. On September 2nd we will start with an introductory session and then continue on September 9 by considering some basic questions about the Christian faith. Please join us! Paul Nauman is coordinating

our Adult Sunday School

You are cordially invited . . . to sing with the choir!

The LCC Choir welcomes anyone who enjoys singing to join

us on Wednesday evenings from 6:45—8 p.m. beginning

fellowship and service each week as we prepare music to help

lead the congregation in worship.

All voice parts are welcome, but women are especially needed.

Contact Kris Nikkel for more information 847-543-8861

or [email protected].

The Worship Team practices on Thursday nights

On Sunday, September 9 there will be a short congrega-

tional meeting immediately following worship for all

members. At this meeting, we will vote on the bylaw

On behalf of the Jill’s House staff, thank you! We are so grateful for everyone who helped make our launch weekend a success. Thank you for your prayers, en-couragement, thoughtful details, and willingness to volunteer both at the church and at camp. Your team went above and beyond! Seven new families in the Chicago area were able to enjoy the benefits of over-

night respite while their children stayed at camp that was specifically tai-lored to their needs! Your hard work made a huge impact on the lives of these families and they can’t wait for the next weekend of camp. We are currently looking for volunteers to serve as one on one buddies at our next camp weekend, September 21-23. If you would like to sign up or learn more about volunteering please send an e-mail to [email protected]. We are so grateful for your partnership and can-

not wait to see how God continues to grow this program!

Our LCC team leader for Jill’s House is Caren Vollrath [email protected] and our Buddy Coordinator is Dave (Kansas) Ander-son [email protected]. We will be hosting the families at LCC for drop off on Friday, and pick up on Sunday as well as using our van to transport them to Harbor. Website: jillshouse.org

LCC’s Youth Ministry theme this year is UNITE. In Ephe-

sians 4:1-6 the Apostle Paul urges the church to live a life

worthy of the calling we have received. He implores the

church to be humble, gentle, bearing with one another in

love. And challenges the body of Christ to make every effort

to keep the unity of the Spirit o the Lord through the bond of

peace. What is the true purpose of this unity? We

are called, as “mission friends” to unite in peace, for the

world, around the purposes of God. I always enjoy contact

with the LCC youth and parents, and invite you to email me

([email protected]), call/text 847-331-3640, or stop by the of-

fice at any time. The church office will be closed on Mondays.

Dear Parent,

This year will be a year of transition as we said “thank you” and “farewell” to Bobby on Sunday, August 19th. Children’s ministries will continue as usual. There will be a few chang-es as children’s ministry will be led by myself, along with the rest of the CF Committee, and Niki Papak for this year. In the meantime, the Christian Formation (CF) committee and Council will be evaluating the children’s ministries at LCC in an effort to make the best determination as to how to move forward in the year(s) to come. If you have any feedback - ideas, concerns, or questions, please contact me or another member of the CF committee. Otherwise, here is what you can expect:

Sunday School Kickoff will be Sunday, August 26th starting at 9:15 a.m. in the sanctuary. After our Sunday School opening session (for all ages), we will be asking children and at least one parent from each family unit to join us downstairs for a special activity. Any other adults will be invited to join us, as well. Worship and the usual picnic will follow. Please bring a side dish, salad, or dessert to share.

Sunday School lessons will continue to be about the Old Testament using the Gospel Project curriculum.

Data sheets - yes, we do need you to fill out a yearly updated data sheet for each of your children. We are required to do this to keep in compliance with our insur-ance and safety policy. We looked into doing this elec-tronically, but were not able to find a free and secure online program at this time. May it be another year of GROWing more CHRISTlike!

To God’s Glory, Heather Larson

Based on last year's par-ticipation and generosity by our church, we have commit-ted to setting up beds, and providing and serving dinner for three Saturdays. The first Saturday is December 1st and we hope to have young families setting up the beds that evening. On Feb-ruary 2, 2019, our Junior High group will be setting up beds and serving the din-ner. The Senior High group will do the same on March 2, 2019

More information will be coming in the future about food contributions and other needs. Thank you, LCC, for your willingness to help in this way over the last several years!

Silent Directed Retreat at CPBC: Sept 14-16, 2018! The theme of the 2018 Silent Directed Retreat is Praying With Henri Nouwen. Nouwen (1932-1996) was a Dutch Catholic priest who spent his life in service as a professor, writer, and theologian. Along with teaching at Notre Dame and the divinity schools of Yale and Har-vard, Nouwen was the author of 39 books. At various seasons of his life, he lived with the Trappist monks in the Abbey of Gene-see, the poor in Peru, and the L’Arche Community in Trosly, France. In 1986 Nouwen moved to the Daybreak L’Arche Com-munity near Toronto, Ontario. He spent his last 10 years in this community of individuals with developmental disabilities living with assistants. Join us for the singing of Taize chants and talks that focus on some of Nouwen’s themes in his writings, such as silence, soli-tude, and prayer. Our worship will conclude with lectio divina prayer with texts related to the theme. The weekend will include a private room for each participant with plenty of space for silence and solitude. There will be times of worship and opportunities to meet with a spiritual director. Pricing and details at www.cpbc.com/silent-retreat.

The Evangelical Covenant Church affirms the centrality of the scriptures, with emphasis upon the grace of God.
