Countryside: Breathe in the fresh air & walk upon a carpet of daisies

Epping is surrounded by the most delightful countryside and open spaces, with a short drive or even a stroll leading you to some of the country’s most remarkable ancient woodland.

EPPING FOREST

Once dubbed ‘The People’s Forest’ by Queen Victoria herself, this area of ancient woodland has been inspiring visitors for centuries. Nearly 6,000 acres are home to a huge diversity of flora and fauna, though Epping Forest is most widely renowned for its ancient pollarded trees and fallow deer. Follow one of the many walking trails to truly immerse yourself in the beautiful surrounds – we recommend the Beech trail which has some steep inclines but is remarkable in the Autumn.

RIVER STORT

Meandering for 14 miles between Hoddesdon in the South and Bishop’s Stortford in the North, the River Stort is a tributary of the River Lee. This delightful stretch remains untouched by human intervention. Follow its course and enjoy wildflowers and watermills.

HUNSDON MEAD

This 68 acre flood meadow is ideal for a stroll in all seasons, with superb displays of flowering plants particularly during the spring and summer months. Yellow is the colour in April and May with cowslips and marigolds, and this is arguably when Hunsdon Mead is at its most stunning. Winter holds its own delights though, when the mead floods and large flocks of lapwings and golden plover come to visit.

LEE VALLEY

At a staggering 10,000 acres across North East London, Essex and Hertfordshire, Lee Valley offers a respite from the daily grind, however you might seek it. White water rafting satisfies high octane thrill seekers, while heritage sites and nature reserves offer something a little more sedate. The Olympics even left its lasting legacy at Lee Valley, which now boasts world-class hockey, tennis and cycling venues.
