Wersquove had a successful but very challenging year at Broadspectrum and with the festive season finally upon us wersquore all probably feeling a little weary Wersquoll all be taking a well-earned break and spending time with friends and loved ones during the upcoming Christmas and New Year break

In the hectic lead up to the festive season it can be quite easy to drop our guard during seemingly routine activities though Our attention might wander while shopping or we might be dashing off to meet with somebody and run across an intersection to hail that taxi or catch the train We can also get so wrapped up in getting things done that we are not as aware of our surroundings as we should be

Wersquove all heard the December and January period referred to as the lsquosilly seasonrsquo This is because it is so easy to overindulge in food and drink and when under the influence of alcohol we donrsquot always make great choices or exercise good judgement

By all means decompress and enjoy yourselves but if you are planning to have a drink plan ahead and appoint a skipper catch a taxi or public transport If you are attending any Broadspectrum organised functions be mindful of our Drug and Alcohol Procedures and please do not return to work or operate machinery if you are under the influence of alcohol

It is also important that we look out for one another while celebrating ndash if a friend family member or work colleague is showing signs of overindulgence or is at risk of an injury please step in and encourage them to cut back have a rest and if necessary ensure that they get home safely

If you are travelling in the holiday period be vigilant on the road Driving during holiday periods can be more risky due to higher traffic volumes congestion fatigue and people driving in unfamiliar environments

Please give yourself time to reach your destination and take regular breaks ndash be aware and alert

Pull over if you feel tired and consider the road conditions especially if you are travelling in the Northern Hemisphere where there might be ice and snow on the roads Most importantly make sure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition

With so much to do in the wrap up before you take your break stress levels can often be elevated Yoursquoll be trying to finalise work commitments honour personal ones buy Christmas presents and so on Donrsquot leave it until the last minute ndash plan ahead and give yourself enough time

Above all ndash remember Christmas is a time of giving of togetherness and of celebration Have a good time and recharge your batteries

Lastly you have my thanks for your valued support during 2015 It has been another year of change and transformation and has been full of challenges We would not have progressed as far as we have without you

Regards Graeme

The NSW Schools contractrsquos Hunter team has expanded its current support of NAIDOC activities with The Cessnock Community of Great Public Schools into performing arts

Three young Aboriginal women from Cessnock High were this year selected to perform in the NSW Rock Eisteddfod Challenge at the Sydney Entertainment Centre More on their performances and the Rock Challenge next week

This week we are showcasing the students and their support staff attendance at the NAISDA Dance College end of year performance lsquoKAMUrsquo at the Carriageworks in Eveleigh NSW Indigenous Engagement Advisor Steve Adams arranged tickets for the team to attend

the formal opening of the event which also announced a new scholarship for Aboriginal women which the Cessnock students now aspire to once they have completed their HSC in two yearsrsquo time ldquoKAMU was being staged after Thursdayrsquos rehearsals so this was a fantastic opportunity to broaden the studentsrsquo cultural immersion in the Sydney Aboriginal arts arenardquo said Steve

Kamu is the Kala Lagaw Ya word meaning Mangrove flower KAMU Director Frances Rings in describing the show stated ldquoLike children mangrove seeds stay attached to their parent growing until they are ready to detach and make their salt-water journey onwards KAMU epitomises the continued cultivation of cultural

values inherent to our foundation and our conscious responsibility towards the health of our land and seasrdquo

For the Cessnock students this statement also captured their aspirations to join NAISDA in the future to pursue their cultural dance and performance career pathways

The students also spent time with Dame Marie Bashir who is the Patron of the NAISDA Foundation and a passionate supporter of Aboriginal performing arts Dame Marie stated ldquoWe need to ensure we give Aboriginal students such as these young ladies every opportunity to attain their dreams and aspirationsrdquo
