Danilo PErez to be named UNESCO Artist for Peace
Danilo Pérez, renowned pianist and artistic director of Berklee College of Music’s Global Jazz Institute, was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace at a ceremony held in Paris, France. The U.N. Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization describes Artists for Peace as “internationally renowned personalities who use their influence, charisma, and prestige to help promote UNESCO’s message.”
Pérez is a Grammy-winner whose distinctive blend of Pan-American jazz (covering the music of the Americas, folkloric, and world music) has won critical acclaim and loyal audiences around the globe. His trio received a Grammy nomination in 2011 for Best Instrumental Jazz Album, and for the past 12 years, Pérez has held the piano chair in the Wayne Shorter Quartet.
In addition to his performing career, Pérez directs the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, where he developed an innovative educational curriculum based on his concept of “interconnective learning.” This concept creates opportunities for students to experience and practice social change through music. He presides over the Danilo Pérez Foundation in his native country of Panama, which provides outreach music programs to children of extreme poverty, and is the artistic director of the Panama Jazz Festival.
Born in Panama, Pérez started his musical studies with his father, a bandleader and singer. By age 10, he was studying the European classical piano repertoire at the National Conservatory in Panama, and at 12, he was working as a professional musician in salsa bands and composing and arranging for Latin American singers. Since the late ‘80s, he has toured and/or recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Wayne Shorter, Steve Lacy, Jack DeJohnette, Tito Puente, Wynton Marsalis, Gary Burton, and others. Pérez is also a prolific composer who has been commissioned by Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Chicago Jazz Festival.

Jim Trompeter’s award-winning career is filled with extensive professional successes at the highest levels as a commercial (jingle) composer, film composer, composer, producer, performer and instructor.
His richly varied compositional styles can be heard on Oprah Winfrey’s TV show, HBO’s The Sopranos and ABC News. He has composed literally thousands of radio and television commercials for nearly every recognizable product or brand you can think of.
He’s also an accomplished film composer, scoring works such as Kartemquin Film’s soon to be released “Prisoner of Her Past” and ABC Television Documentary “Breaking The Cycle of a Child”. As a Video Game Composer for manufacturers such as WMS and Midway games, Jim has created dozens of complex gaming scores for products such as “Mortal Combat” and ”Dirty Harry.”
Jim’s performance chops are impressive and he has the awards to show for it. Jim won the Down Beat Magazine award for “Best Instrumental Jazz Performer”; Montreux Jazz Festival’s “Stan Kenton Memorial Scholarship” award for Best Performer, finalist in the “Hennessey” National Jazz Festival and five Down Beat awards in the Large Ensemble category.
Jim has also played with an impressive array of musicians over the years. As a member of Gloria Estefan’s “Miami Sound Machine” Jim performed globally in over 350 live and televised concerts. He performed on the band’s double platinum recording, “Let it Loose,” and composed and arranged for its live tours. Jim also toured with Jazz Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. Jim has also performed with Jon Secada, Boy George, Amy Grant, Tony Randall, David Lee Roth, Joe Montegna, Whitney Houston, Christian McBride, Sammy Davis Jr, Oprah Winfrey, Shecky Green, Art Garfunkel, Dennis Miller, Sinbad, Paul Rodriguez, Freddie Hubbard, Jon Faddis, Joe Lovano, Arturo Sandoval, Kurt Elling, Bob James, Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker, Tim Hagans, Rick Margitza, Steve Rodby, Paul Wertico, Paquito D’Rivera, Bobby Mintzer, Eddie Daniels, Fareed Haque, Conte Condoli, Lou Marini, Andy Narell, Richie Cole, Scott Wendholt, George Garzone, Louis Bellson, Bill Watrous, Carl Fontana and Claudio Roditi, among others.
Jim produced and arranged BillBoard Magazine’s Pop Song of the Year, “It Doesn’t Really Matter Now.” Jim was also the Musical Director of the 1993 Clio Awards held in New York City.
Jim grew up in a musical family and began taking piano lessons when he was young. His mother, Billie Webster, a noted Chicago pianist and singer, claimed that Jim’s capabilities surpassed hers by the time he was 11-years-old. His commitment to passing on a passion for musical excellence is evidenced by his presence on the music faculty at Roosevelt University. He also teaches a select group of advanced students privately.

JAZZ – traditional, bebop, contemporary, improvisational – played by such legendary figures as Von Freeman, Franz Jackson and Wilbur Campbell, as well as young lions Kurt Elling, Eric Alexander and Orbert Davis. All capture the broad spectrum of jazz from its root rhythms in New Orleans to New York avant-garde. Deep smoky jazz sounds fill the club in the early morning hours when soulful musicians continue to express their love of jazz by jamming ’til the early dawn.

Jazz’s most celebrated collaborations, Chick Corea (piano) and Gary Burton (vibraphone) have performed together every year for the last forty. Their new album, Hot House explores their unique take on standards by composers from Kurt Weill and Antonio Carlos Jobim to Thelonious Monk and Lennon and McCartney. The multiple Grammy-winning duo also adds the Harlem String Quartet, expanding their legendary chamber-jazz repertoire on Chick’s composition Mozart Goes Dancing and other classic Chick and Gary tunes.
