New Three Concert SeriesIn Terra PaxSunday, December 8, 2013, 3 and 5:30 p.m.Bridgehampton Presbyterian ChurchMark Mangini, Conductor
In difficult times, the holiday hope for peace is poignant, and it is woventhrough this year’s holiday program.
Gerald Finzi’s “In Terra Pax” mixes the verse of the early 20th centurypoet Robert Bridges with words from the Gospel of Luke to create astunning musical evocation of Christmas.
The inscription “pro pace,” added by the composer Cecilia McDowallafter the tragic events of September 11, 2001, heads “Ave Maris Stella,” or“Hail Star of the Sea,” which describes the calming of rough waters in musicthat is both lush and rhythmically imaginative. The work was commissionedby a school in the seaside town of Portsmouth, England.
The other pieces echo the yearningfor light and peace embodied inChristmas, Hannukah, and other winterholidays. McDowall’s “Christus NatusEst” is a medley of mostly medievalcarols with a sparkling orchestration thatsuggests an ancient wind band. Andcarols are, of course, the basis of RalphVaughan Williams’ uplifting “Fantasiaon Christmas Carols.”
