Prof. Dr. Gilberto Righi was born on January1st, 1937 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He died suddenly as aresult of a heart attack on February 26th

, 1999 in SaoPaulo. Gilberto Righi was married to Lourdes Abbudand they had four sons (Alex, Bruno, Ciro and Dario)and one daughter, Adne.

In 1963, Gilberto received his Doctor ofZoology degree from the Universidade de Sao Paulowhere he defended his thesis on Tegula viridula(Gmelin, 1791). It was only in 1968 that Dr. Righibegan his life-long study of earthworms with a thesisoutlining a study of the family Glossoscolecidae(Oligochaeta) from Brazil. In addition to his scientificstudies, Dr. Righi also held Bachelors degrees inPortuguese language and literature and a second inRussian language and literature.

Although Dr. Righi's greatest academicinterests were in the areas of teaching and directing

graduate students, he made numerous field tripsthroughout South America to collect earthworms tosupport his research activities in his studies of theNeotropicalOligochaeta. He shared this interest withhis many graduate students and collaborators, includingthe authors of this tribute. During the past two and ahalf years of his life, Dr. Righi served on the advisorycommittee for Catalina de Mischis as she prepared for,and defended her doctoral thesis. Correspondence withJohn Reynolds began in 1974 during the preparation ofthe original volume of Nomenclatura Oligochaeto-logica, for which Dr. Righi prepared the PortugueseIntroduction (Prolegomenon) in the original book andsubsequent three supplements. This initial contact ledReynolds to travel to Sao Paulo during the fall term of1975 to present guest lectures at his university andundertake field work with Dr. Righi. During this visit,he stayed in the Righi home, where he had theopportunity to get to know the whole family. Manyyears later we collaborated on a paper presenting thefirst report of earthworms from Belize.

Those who work with earthworms, particularlythe Neotropical fauna, are grateful that he was willing toshare his knowledge through personal collaborations,with students and through his writings. Although hegenerally remained in South America, many made thetrip to Sao Paulo to meet and work with him. He was anenthusiastic and dedicated scientist and was able to passon this enthusiasm to his colleagues and students. Sogreat was his contribution to earthworm research, it willbe an incredibly long time before the void left by hisloss can be filled.

Because of his stimulating and optimisticoutlook on life he was able to make even dull subjectsinteresting and was in frequent demand as a lecturer onnatural history subjects.
