GreetingsFrom The Team

What a thrill to come up with a brand new event for you to enjoy! We are very honored by your presence this weekend, and by the confidence you have demonstrated in joining us in this new adventure. Let’s wish a long and successful life to the “In French with English subtitles” film festival, a fundraising event that has set the goals to entertain a large audience at the eve of the holiday season, while bearing in mind that some are less fortunate.

This year again, the French film industry has proved abundant and we are proud to present a hand picked selection of movies that illustrates the rich diversity of today's French cinema.

We would like to thank our special guests from France. They were all very enthusiastic and committed since the beginning of the project. These guests are the most sought after talents in the French movie industry and we are very proud to welcome them for the duration of the festival.

All the films shown this weekend were freshly released in France, from late spring until the early fall. It enables us to present them either as International, U.S. or New York Première for your eyes only.

This great adventure was inspired by Alexandre Chemla, a long time benefactor of the Arts and French culture, in collaboration with Patrick Gimenez, a French film producer, and a team of aficionados, already experts in organizing similar events.

In addition, it was the unconditional support of our sponsors that was the decisive factor convincing us to start this new venture.

And now, show time!

The Festival Team

On behalf of Entraide Française, I am extremely proud to present In French (with English Subtitles), the first fundraising French film festival created to the benefit of a charity, displaying an outstanding choice of New York, U.S. and International Premieres, here in the heart of Manhattan.

This festival happens for a cause. The wonderful idea was to bring together the passion for cinema and the mission of Entraide Française into a special New York event. Thanks to Catherine Laleuf, an active member of Entraide Française, and her experienced team of volunteers, the project came to life swiftly.

Linking French cinema to our association, devoted to help and give hope to French-American families who face sudden misfortune, right here around us, is a bold challenge we are delighted to take up. Building cross- cultural relations is of interest for both French cinema and

Entraide Française and we are pleased to welcome our American friends to this festival. It is a unique opportunity for all, to share our passion for the cinematographic art, to meet French actors and directors and also to prove our compassion to the unexpected and unpredictable incidents of life.

I wish to thank all of you, spectators and sponsors, for your contribution to our cause. We also would like to acknowledge especially our partners, Altour and French Feeling Films, for their leadership and continuous support since the very beginning of this project. I am deeply grateful to the FIAF for welcoming us at the Florence Gould Hall.

Enjoy your weekend!

Vincent Perez

Vincent Perez is one of the heartthrob, romantic actors of a whole generation of French comedians. Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, he always dreamed of becoming an actor, although sculpture, painting and even photography were among his initial interests. He studied acting at the Conservatoire National d’Art Dramatique of Geneva and later in Paris. In 1986, he joined Patrice Chéreau and his comedians at the Theatre des Amandiers of Nanterre (Paris).

From stage to screen

He makes his screen debut in Gardien de nuit (1986, dir. Jean-Pierre Limosin), then plays in Hotel de France the same year. In 1989, he gains worldwide success with Cyrano de Bergerac directed by Jean-Paul Rappeneau, a classic in which he co-stars opposite Gérard Depardieu. The large-scale Oscar-winning production Indochine by Regis Wargnier wins the Oscar for Best Foreign Picture, and launches his international career, confirmed by his role as Marguerite de Valois’ lover in La Reine Margot (1993) by Patrice Chéreau, awarded Best Director at the Cannes Film festival.

Hollywood is calling

In 1996, Perez takes on the lead role in The Crow, replacing the late Brandon Lee, hereby breaking his image of the romantic lover. Another costume film Le Bossu (1997) by Philippe de Broca, is followed by I dreamed of Africa by Hugh Hudson, where he shares the lead with Kim Basinger. His role as a transvestite in Those Who Love Me Can Take The Train by Patrice Chéreau awards him the César of Best Supporting Actor in 1998.

Also directing

In 1992 he presents in Cannes his first short film, L’Échange, followed in 1999 by Rien Dire. In 2002, he co-writes and directs his first feature film Peau d’Ange. In 2007, he directs Si j’etais toi (The Secret) produced by EuropaCorp, headed by Luc Besson.

Denis Dercourt

Denis Dercourt was trained as a musician and still is one today.

A Classical education

Born in Paris, son a piano teacher and a film producer, he sang in the very prestigious child chorus, Les Petits chanteurs à la Croix de bois and studies viola, and later alto. He also starts shooting several short works on video and super-8.

Talented, Denis Dercourt ? For sure. A gifted musician, a brilliant student, he also is one the most interesting emerging French directors. Where the music and cinema meet.

After acquiring his degrees in Political Science and Philosophy, he joins the French Symphonic Orchestra in 1988 as an alto soloist. He performs in places like the Salle Pleyel and Carnegie Hall. He has also freelanced for French and foreign pop-music groups.

Music and Movies

In 1993, he becomes a viola and chamber music teacher at the Strasbourg Conservatory. In 1996, he makes a medium-length film, Le Déménagement, the same year he founded a production outfit (“Les films à un dollar”) with his brother Tom, who produces all his films.

His first feature film, Les Cachetonneurs, is a comedy about freelance musicians trying to find jobs. After his second film, Lise and André, a road-movie, he directs, in 2003, Mes enfants ne sont pas comme les autres, in which Richard Berry manages his own two children, both gifted musicians.

International recognition

His third feature film, La Tourneuse de pages (The Page Turner, 2006), featuring Catherine Frot and Déborah François, is selected for the section “Un certain regard” at the Cannes Film Festival. This story of a well-known pianist and her page turner, who is waiting in her shadow for revenge grants him large international success. It also marks his debut in the thriller genre, which he pursues in his fifth film, Demain dès l’aube.

SCREENING SPONSORED BY

This film explores the relationship between two brothers, the younger of whom is so enthralled by historical battles that he has lost touch with reality. In response to the insistent demands of his cancer-stricken mother, a piano teacher, the older brother tries to cure the younger of his strange obsession.

In doing so, he discovers a mysterious passion, for which director Denis Dercourt consulted with battle reconstruction specialists.

Demain dès l’aube

QUOTES Denis Dercourt | Director

When did you discover these fans of Napoleonic historical reconstructions, who provided the inspiration for Tomorrow at Dawn? A long time ago, when I watched a documentary and found it rather cinematic. I had also read that in Napoleon’s army, musicians were known as «Far from the bullets» because they were kept away from the frontline. Putting these two pieces of information together, I thought: Here we have a subject for a film.

In a deserted town, where life used to be centered around a factory, a few inhabitants have decided to stay more by choice than necessity because that's all they have ever known.Francis is the conscientious factory worker, whoses son, Samir, returns there after a long absence. Maria, the neighbor, lives with her son José who believes his father is Gary Cooper, and waits for him everyday in the street of this modern no man's land.

Adieu Gary

QUOTES Nassim Amaouche| DirectorWhy did you refer to Gary Cooper, instead of other Hollywood figures such as John Wayne?I never much liked John Wayne. Gary Cooper had more of an old fashioned glossy magazine touch, that makes him farther removed from our times. Gary Cooper gave me the means to go deep into the power of the myth, of the legend (…) When it came to my film, it seemed amusing to think that someone, who is a little bit crazy, could imagine that Gary Cooper, the triumphant myth of capitalism, would come and solve all his problems. It’s symbolic.

Lucas, a little-known singer from the 1990s, becomes ten years later the king of the new French pop-rock scene by appropriating the songs of his friend Thomas, who has long disappeared.

Thomas, however, reappears one day and thus begins five days of hell for Lucas as he tries to hide his immense fame. Lucas decides to let Thomas believe that he is still a ticket controller for the RATP, and that his luxury house and Mercedes car are owned by his goofy friend Francis, an out-of-work mime actor whom Lucas presents as a celebrity.

In MemoriamJocelyn Quivrin

Incognito

QUOTES Bénabar| ActorAs a singer, did you recognize yourself in Lucas? No, but I do recognize the problems the singer in the film encounters, the feeling of being an impostor that comes as soon as one gets successful, even if it is for just a moment. If you look around you, when you succeed as a singer, you are actually better paid than a surgeon, which is very troublesome. I always had this feeling... but you get over it very quickly, I can assure you. (...) It is a bit the story of the film: the dishonesty of the singer as he becomes famous through the songs written by another.

Pascal Elbé

After a childhood spent in Strasbourg, Pascal Elbé begins his acting career on stage. He co-writes with two friends two comic plays which had great success at the Splendid and at the Cafe de la Gare: Charité bien ordonnée (1992) and Tout baigne (1999). Simultaneously, he appears on screen in Gerard Jugnot’s comedy Fallait pas (1996).

Pascal Elbé becomes successful in 2003 thanks to the sweet comedy Père et Fils, directed by Michel Boujenah, in which he plays the role of one of Philippe Noiret’s three sons. Co-starring with Charles Berling and Bruno Putzulu, he is the revelation of this film that he co-wrote, and is nominated for the “Best Male Newcomer” César award.

He then works on a succession of tandem comedies (L’amour aux trousses with Jean Dujardin, 2004, Le cactus with Clovis Cornillac, 2005). The same year, he makes a great performance in the thriller Les Mauvais joueurs (Gamblers). Heartthrob in some roles (Tout pour plaire, 2002, by Cécile Telerman), best buddy in others (Mes amis mes amours, 2006), he plays with his image of handsome man in the gay comedy Comme les autres (2008) where he is Lambert Wilson’s partner.

Pascal Elbé, trustful friend, meets again with the directors of his debut in 2007: Ariel Zeitoun (Le Dernier Gang) and Michel Boujenah (Trois amis). When he decides to direct his first film (La Tête de turc) in 2009, he gives the lead role to Roschdy Zem who directed him in Mauvaise foi (Bad Faith, 2006).

But, over the Atlantic Ocean, upon learning that the plane is going to crash, Romaine decides that she doesn't want to die without telling Justin the truth she's always kept hidden from him. However, nothing unfolds exactly as planned.

Previous episodes of Romaine's life have been interpreted until now by Agnès Obadia herself. For her second film about Romaine, the director decides to separate herself from her alter ego, and offers up Sandrine Kiberlain in the role of the gawky, clumsy girl.

QUOTES Agnès Obadia | DirectorAside from some exceptions, your character is recurrent and follows you from film to film. How did Romaine come to be?It was wonderful to be able to offer this role to Sandrine Kiberlain. I was very curious to see how she would play the part, immerse herself in the role. I have been admiring Sandrine for a very long time, she has a natural elegance without trying to be so, comic without slapstick humor, and graceful whilst being clumsy.

Vincent Elbaz

Beginning his career on stage, Vincent Elbaz acted in Sam Shepard, Goldoni, and Fassbinder’s plays. He makes his debut on the big screen in Le Péril jeune, directed by Cédric Klapisch, along with a whole new generation of French actors: Romain Duris, Hélène de Fougerolle and Élodie Bouchez. He, later, meets Klapisch again, playing in Peut-être (1999) and Ni pour ni contre (2002).

Blockbusters and authors

After small parts in Le plus bel âge (1995) and Enfants de salaud (1996), Vincent Elbaz tops the box office with two popular comedies in 1997: Les randonneurs and La Vérité si je mens !, where he plays the sassy yuppie, Dov. Vincent Elbaz has now become the unavoidable actor in the French cinema world. He successfully specializes in young, seductive rebels as in the film Petits désordres amoureux (dir. Olivier Péray, 1998), Un pur moment de rock’n’roll (dir. Manuel Boursinhac, 1999), Rue des plaisirs, (dir. Patrice Leconte), and Embrassez qui vous voudrez, (dir. Michel Blanc 2001).

Recipient of the Jean Gabin Award in 1998, he makes fun of himself in Quasimodo del Paris (dir. Patrick Timsit, 1999) and Absolument fabuleux (dir. Gabriel Aghion, 2001). In 2005, he co-stars with Marion Cotillard in the romantic comedy Ma vie en l’air. Outstanding irresponsible father in Tel père, telle fille in 2007, he features his cool attitude on screen, in Le Dernier gang, directed by Ariel Zeitoun and in Bancs publics, directed by Bruno Podalydès.

Have you ever heard your mother say, "be careful who you marry because you're also marrying their family"? When Alain married Nathalie, he wasn't quite aware of the extra baggage that came along with his happily-ever-after: her family. Saturday night usually means dinner at his brother-in-law's, but Alain has reached his limit. He's fed up with the unsolicited life advice, sick of his niece's soporific, pretentious, pre-dinner singing recitals, weary of watching an old wedding video for the millionth time, and has definitely had enough of his sister-in-law, who is constantly on the verge of a psychotic breakdown due to her ticking biological clock. But he hasn't seen the worst of it yet... until he realizes that perhaps there's some affection beneath the insufferable hysteria - one might even say love.

Tellement proches

QUOTES Eric Toledano & Olivier Nakache | DirectorsHow do you manage together on the set ?O. Nakache: We don’t have isolated tasks, we are both up there in the thick of it all. (..) When one of us is checking the light with the director of photography, the other one is dealing with the costume designer.É. Toledano: Being two directors on the set allows us to have twice the ideas, twice the energy, there’s always one of us ready to go upfront. For now we have found a balance and it has lasted 15 years.

Nicolas has a happy existence, parents who love him, a great group of friends with whom he has great fun, and all he wants is that nothing changes... However, one day, he overhears a conversation that leads him to believe that his life might change forever: His mother is pregnant! He panics and envisions the worst: soon a little brother will be there, taking up so much space that his parents will not have time to take care of him anymore, and they might even abandon him in the forest like Tom Thumb...

Le Petit Nicolas

QUOTES Laurent Tirard | DirectorI really like the story-telling style inherent in the original work. In the Hollywood films of the 30s to 50s, screenwriters had no other choice, in order to avoid censorship, than to have the actors say the essence in sub text. Today, when one watches these films again, the real sense of the dialogues, that might have appeared smooth and neat, is obvious. (...) It is not the case with Le petit Nicolas: the characters are always very nice and polished. However, one senses their flaws, their frustrations, their anxieties. When you read Le Petit Nicolas to a child, he will not have the same perception as an adult. The differences in interpretation demonstrate the intelligence and the treasure of this work.

Twelve-year-old Léa wishes she could live in another family. A united family, with no separations, where her mother would understand her better, her father would be more down to earth and her younger "green" brother would stop bothering her about the time she spends taking a shower under the pretext that the planet is running out of water....

This year, Léa is entering 7th grade. Whilst her father and mother are trying to rebuild their lives, she will experience her first love, the one that sways all her certainties about the world and her parents. It's the kind of experience that leaves you forever changed.

That year, each member of the family slowly finds their way and opens themselves to others...

Une semaine sur deux

QUOTES Yvan Calbérac | DirectorI used an intimate camera with the actors, using close-ups, and often in movement, accompanying for instance, the children in their comings and goings, such as on the bridge that separates the father and the mother which has a symbolic value... Such as the bonsai that Léa carries, which not only helped the seasons to go by, but also takes on various symbolic meanings: it evokes both an artificial halt in her development and a need for the young adolescent to find her roots.

One For The Road

QUOTES Philippe Godeau| DirectorWas your intention to turn this grave theme into an enjoyable moment?Absolutely. I like films in which one enjoys oneself. I like the idea that a film can change our way of seeing things. As a producer, it is a pleasure to work for over two years on a story and characters who are the opposite of myself. For instance, I was totally hypochondriac when I bought the rights to Marie de Hennezel’s book La mort intime and its adaption for screen. C’est la vie de Jean-Pierre Ameris also changed me a little, and I hope that it will also be the case for the viewers of Le dernier pour la route.

Hervé, boss of a press agency, realizing that he risks losing everything, makes the decision to give up his alcohol addiction. In doing so, Hervé meets others who face similar circumstances and who encourage him to pull through and start a new life.

The film is inspired by the true story of Hervé Chabalier, a well-known TV producer and head of CAPA, a respected documentary production company. He explained in a book, Le dernier pour la route : Chronique d'un divorce avec l'alcool, (One for the Road, Chronicle of a Divorce with Alcohol) how much he was suffering because of his addiction, and, most important, how he managed to make it through.

The Cellier family is an ordinary family: its members are completely insane. Mady, the mother, in her sixties, spends her time criticizing her two daughters and her retired husband. Henry, ex-captain of industry, seems to have acquired bizarre habits since his retirement. Antoine, the older brother, is incapable of managing a company and runs from one bankruptcy to another. Alice, the sister, compulsively paints depressive and toxicomanic madonnas. Annabelle, a nurse in the intensive care unit, desperately tries to save her kin in predicting their future in the cards.

One night Alice, in one of her depressive evenings, had met Jacques, a solitary and disillusioned cop “by chance”. This event will change their lives for better or for worse.

Quelque chose à te dire

QUOTES Cécile Telerman | DirectorI wanted to make a film about a family and its conflicts. I wanted to tell a story of a family, but above all, its transmissions, meaning: What do we receive from our parents? How does this heritage condition our existence, how do we select its values? And to avoid writing a family saga, I chose to make the story a little complicated.
