WE MAKE IT FLYAirbus is the flagship of European aerospace, defence and related services. The company has
been at the heart of Europe’s aerospace and defence industry since its very beginnings as a result
of its predecessor companies in the “home” countries of France, Germany, Spain and the United
Kingdom. We are proud of this truly European heritage. Today, along with world class businesses
in Defence and Space and Helicopters, Airbus delivers an expansive portfolio of cutting-edge
products and services that address the needs of our customers worldwide. Headquartered in
Toulouse, our European background is mirrored in our legal structure as “European Company”
(Airbus Societas Europaea).
Since 2000, Airbus’ staff has increased from 88,900 to about 134,000 in 2016. Together, we have
almost tripled our sourcing volume to 49.6 bn euros of external sourcing in 2016 with Europe
benefitting from the lion’s share of 68%. Also, Airbus more than doubled its revenues to 66.6 bn
euros between 2000 and 2016.
Airbus has to further increase its international footprint if it is to continue in its success at the
European level. While more than 90% of our workforce is still based within Europe, our revenues
from outside Europe have reached 69%. To respond to this internationalization, the company is
increasing its global presence. The Final Assembly Lines in Tianjin (China) and in Mobile (United
States) exemplify this. Beyond, Airbus produces helicopters in Brazil, manages research centres
in Singapore, India, the U.S., China and Russia and runs maintenance centres on five continents.
An impressive order backlog of above 1,060 bn euros in 2016, over 100 locations in Europe and
more than 170 worldwide, more than 12,000 direct suppliers of which 8,400 are based in Europe:
This is what Airbus is all about. Our industry is a living network of partnerships – employees,
suppliers, experts and academia – all working together with one idea in mind: the continuation of
our European success story.

Curiosity drives us to define what’s next in aerospace. At Airbus, we leverage our scale and exper-
tise with the nimbleness and agility of a start-up to explore unorthodox solutions to our industry’s
challenges.
These solutions include electrification, the development of electric and hybrid-electric propulsion
and one of the most promising technologies in the future of flight. Viable solutions will enable
quieter and cleaner aircraft, and open up new markets and applications.
Urban Air Mobility is a key model of future urban transportation. Our projects include Vahana,
CityAirbus, and Skyways, with road maps to bring these projects and the necessary infrastructure
rapidly into the real world making science fiction reality.
Our design & digital factory programmes will make greater use of cyber-physical production sys-
tems, and automation. Augmented technologies will accelerate design, assurance and mainte-
nance phases, resulting in faster decision-making and improved performance and productivity.
In these new smart working environments realtime information enables improved communication

Jobs are important, and never more so than in these challenging economic times. About 134,000
people work for Airbus around the world. Despite its internationalization, more than 90% of these
jobs are based in Europe. In addition, our jobs offer real value beyond the individual: For every
Airbus employee, almost 2 jobs are supported in the supply chain. In total, we support more than
220,000 jobs in our home countries through spending with suppliers. Airbus employees tend to
be highly qualified and possess valuable skills. For instance, 60% of our employees in our core
countries are graduates. And we continue to invest in maintaining our position as one of Europe’s
most recognised employers of engineers, graduates, technicians and professionals. To do so, we
offer our people the chance to grow throughout their career: internships and graduate program-
mes, improvement schemes to champion innovation, a network where subject matter experts can
propagate ideas. Consequently, our employees identify themselves with the company – our low
attrition rate of just 2% is just one figure that underlines this achievement.

Airbus has become an important pillar of the European economy, and of the economies of the
Airbus home countries in particular. Thanks to our positive economic impact in terms of growth,
job creation and export, we not only strengthen the entire European aerospace sector but also
improve the European trade balance.
As an architect and integrator of complex aerospace and defence products, Airbus takes a
proactive approach to building sustainable supplier partnerships in Europe. In 2016, we spent
more than 70 per cent of Airbus revenues on external sourcing, increasing our sourcing turnover
to 49.6 bn euros. European suppliers continue to benefit with a lion’s share of 68%. By embracing
SMEs as an integral part of the Airbus ecosystem, our spending with suppliers circulates
throughout the economy and increases our total value chain impact through economic multiplier
effects. Our long-term production ramp up of commercial aircraft in the next years will even further
strengthen our suppliers, thereby contributing to the economy as a whole.
A very good example is how our supply chain benefits from the two European space flagships
Galileo and Copernicus. For Galileo, Airbus and its suppliers contribute to the satellite manufac-
turing, ground stations and the launches, as well as proactively support market uptake in order
to deliver ready-to-use services, mainly for the various transport modes. This includes, of course,
aeronautics and the new Air Traffic Management system currently implemented. Airbus strongly
supports the Copernicus programme, which will position Europe as the world leader in Earth
Observation for the valuable services being developed: in addition to the manufacturing of the
Sentinel satellites, Europe tests in orbit the new high speed laser data transmission via the Euro-
pean Data Relay Satellites, and organises the outstanding amount of data dissemination to the
end users.
In the future, the recent creation of ArianeGroup, a joint venture with Safran, will develop the
next-generation European launcher Ariane 6 to ensure the success of the European space
launcher business in the face of growing international competition.

In 2016, Airbus initiated a digital transformation strategy across all of our business. This shift to
more software and data driven ways of working has transformed Airbus into a digital industrial
company and will offer our customers new solutions and business opportunities.
Airbus has a significant digital community working on over 450 projects as part of the digital
transformation programme, from design and manufacturing to exciting new product ideas. These
projects include using virtual and augmented reality in design to utilizing the Internet of Things (IoT)
for our “Factory of the Future” initiative. In time, our products, our factories and facilities, and our
services will all have digital twins allowing Airbus to work smarter, deliver faster, and respond to
customer needs in a fully digital world.
Leveraging our scale and industry expertise, Airbus is invested in digital innovations that will
disrupt aerospace and flight. Airbus’ partnership with OneWeb, a satellite constellation to provide
internet worldwide, is just one example of this startup and industrial collaboration, which combines
speed, business agility, and scale to produce solutions that address new business and social
challenges.

At Airbus, our metrics for success go beyond simply our bottom line. Success needs to be
environmentally sustainable and responsible. Naturally, reducing our environmental footprint
drives many of our innovations and is part of Airbus’ core strategy.
We are optimizing eco-efficiencies across our products and facilities. Commercial aircraft such
as the A320neo fly with a 15 per cent fuel burn reduction and with nearly a 50 per cent reduc-
tion in noise footprint. Our H160 helicopter is more powerful than previous generations, while
reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. And across all our sites in Europe, Airbus is
running the Blue5 programme, which supports the implementation of reduction projects for
energy, CO2, water, waste, and VOC.
At European level, Airbus joined forces with key public and private stakeholders in the Single
European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) initiative. The common objective is to find new solu-
tions for building a more efficient air traffic management system. Moreover, Airbus actively
contributes in Cleansky, a joint undertaking of the European Commission and the European
aeronautics industry, towards making a substantial impact on noise reduction, CO2 emissions
and fuel economy.
Sustainable fuel research is also a core tenet of Airbus’ environmental initiatives, focusing
on three central principles: supporting the qualification and certification of new fuels, the
large-scale use of sustainable aviation fuels, and ensuring the sustainability of these solutions.
Airbus is heavily involved in the Initiative Towards sustAinable Kerosene for Aviation (ITAKA),
which aims to speed up the commercialisation of aviation biofuels in Europe.
