This concert is the exciting culmination of an inaugural partnership project between Southwell Music Festival and Awards for Young Musicians.

Three exceptionally talented young musicians, supported by AYM’s annual Awards Programme, are taking part in masterclasses and being mentored by three festival soloists. Jamie Campbell (the Festival’s Associate Artistic Director), Libby Burgess and Nathaniel Boyd will work with the young musicians throughout the day on solo repertoire, and coach them as an ensemble playing music for piano trio, all to be performed in the evening’s concert. Libby, Jamie and Nathaniel will also perform the celebrated Mendelssohn Piano Trio in D Minor. Audience members are welcome to watch the open coaching sessions between 2.00 pm am 4.00 pm in the State Chamber of the Archbishop’s Palace (free admission).

“I am excited and proud that the Festival is able to support the vital work of AYM. Since its inception the Festival has sought to provide performance opportunities for young musicians and this is a wonderful addition to our programme of events.” Marcus Farnsworth, Festival Director

Outside, a new public open space - The Education Garden - has been created under the ruined fifteenth-century gable of the Palace. The Palace and Education Garden are open to the public every day, though please check the Minster website in case there is a special event.

This event takes place at Southwell Minster and The Archbishop’s Palace by kind agreement of the Dean and Chapter.

An extensive refurbishment of the Archbishop’s Palace at Southwell was carried out in 2014, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project included a refurbishment of the Song School, a soundscape of the choir rehearsing and the provision of appropriate facilities for the choristers and visiting school parties. The vaulted State Chamber, accessible by a new lift as required, is now multi-functional and makes a superb concert venue.

"I wholeheartedly support AYM because it nurtures new generations of exceptional young musicians. We are all the richer for it.” Julian Lloyd Webber, AYM Patron

Awards for Young Musicians (AYM) believes that all musically talented young people should have the opportunity to develop their talent. AYM helps children and young people with exceptional potential from lower income backgrounds achieve their musical goals. Annie (Leicester), Tim (Towcester) and Katharine (Cleethorpes) each receive support through AYM’s annual Awards programme in the form of financial assistance for musical costs and access to tailor-made musical opportunities designed to nurture their musical progression. Proceeds from this event will go to AYM’s work in the Midlands.
