Dear Friends and Jazz Lovers,
I am so happy to have all of you join us for the 13th edition of the Jazzy Christmas Concerts.
It’s been a number of years since I did a big band Christmas show. Tonight, I will reprise some
of the tunes from the first big band show with many newly arranged tunes.
My guest vocalists are very special.
Firstly, we have the great Carmen Bradford who sang with the Count Basie Band when the
Count was still with us. She still sings with the current Basie band which lives on and continues
to swing strong. Carmen and I have been making music on and off for about 12 years now and
it’s always a great pleasure to share the bandstand with her.
One of the most versatile jazz-oriented singers in Singapore, able to change genres seamlessly
and be completely authentic is Alemay Fernandez. I am happy to have her on the show.
My mentor and recently minted Cultural Medallion recipient who is Singapore’s Godfather of
Jazz, Louis Soliano, will dazzle us with his deep and swinging vocals.
I am so proud to also have the members of the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra with us
as well. Our special guest instrumentalists include my old friend and top European saxophonist
Tony Lakatos, and one of the top lead trumpeters in the UK, Tom Walsh joins us.
Another old friend since 1996, harmonica player Jens Bunge, will add his poignant style to the
proceedings.
I want to thank Esplanade for being such amazing project collaborators all these years, and
of course my constant supporter over the past 12 years and principal sponsor for tonight’s
concert, EFG Bank.
Enjoy the show!
With love and appreciation to you all,
Jeremy

DaCosta, Ernie Watts, Charlie Haden, Carmen Bradford, Matt Monro, Toots Thielemans and

Having performed all over the world, in November 2014, Monteiro performed on one of the
main stages of the EFG London Jazz Festival at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and at the famed
Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.
In November 2015, he returned to the EFG London Jazz Festival to play at the Royal Albert Hall’s
Elgar Room with his group Jeremy Monteiro & Alberto Marsico with the Jazz-Blues Brothers,
which has an album on the label most associated with the recordings of Ella Fitzgerald, the
iconic Verve record label. Monteiro is the only Southeast Asian jazz musician to have had an

been proudly supported by EFG Bank for the past 12 years.
In 2018, he produced three albums. Melissa Tham’s Remembering Teresa, a loving jazz tribute
to the beloved late Taiwanese songstress Teresa Teng; a yet-to-be-named album by superstar
European singer Laura Fygi, which was recorded in November and will be released on vinyl
early next year; and his own album, Yesterday Once More, his second jazz tribute album to
the music of the Carpenters. He has also released several other albums in the past two years,
including Brazilian Dreams, Montage, With A Little Help from My Friends.
In 2016, together with a few jazz supporter friends, he established the Jazz Association

CARMEN BRADFORD VOCALS
Born in Austin, Texas and raised in Altadena, California,
Carmen Bradford grew up with music in her home and in her
heart. It was only natural that Carmen would follow in the
footsteps of her great family legacy being the daughter of
legendary trumpeter/composer Bobby Bradford and world-
renowned jazz vocalist/author Melba Joyce. Her grandfather
Melvin Moore sang with Lucky Millender and Dizzy Gillespie’s
Big Band in the 1940s and sang with the Ink Spots, making
Carmen the third generation of incredible musicians. She has
carved out a place in music history for herself and is playing
an integral role in this uniquely American art form called jazz.
Carmen was discovered and hired by William “Count” Basie and was the featured vocalist in the
legendary Count Basie Orchestra for nine years. She has since performed and/or recorded with
Wynton Marsalis, Shelly Berg, John Clayton along with the Clayton/Hamilton Orchestra, Nancy
Wilson, Doc Severinsen, Tony Bennet, James Brown, Patti Austin, Byron Stripling, Dori Caymmi,
George Benson, Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams, DIVA Jazz Orchestra, the National
Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Clayton-Hamilton
Jazz Orchestra, The Dani Felber Big Band, Dallas Symphony, Oklahoma Symphony, Vancouver
Philharmonic, and countless artists around the world. Carmen performed on two Grammy Award-
winning albums with the Basie Band in the 1980s and later collaborated on a third Grammy Award-
winning album Big Boss Band with guitarist George Benson in 1991.
On 7 Dec 2018, the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences announced the Grammy
Awards nominations for 2019. Among the nominees is the Count Basie Orchestra featuring
Carmen Bradford as one of the featured singers on the album, All About That Basie along with
fellow vocalists on the album like Stevie Wonder and Kurt Elling.
LOUIS SOLIANO VOCALS
“Growing up in a family of travelling musicians, I was influenced
by my father Paul Soliano and uncle Gerry Soliano who were
multi-instrumentalists. I began lessons on the piano, violin,
started drumming at the age of 7 with my dad’s 24-inch Ludwig
Bass drum set. My first break came at 17 when I replaced the
drummer from Jose Daroya’s Band. And my interest grew and
decided to be a full-time musician as a drummer.” – Louis Soliano
Since winning the Gene Krupa Drum competition in his
teens (organised by Cathay Cinemas), Louis Soliano has
been constantly pushing the boundaries of jazz drumming
in Singapore. Vocally, Louis is also one of the best interpreters of jazz standards with a style
reminiscent of Johnny Hartman and Frank Sinatra.
Louis is a major driving force in the Singapore music culture scene in jazz, having performed
in every major music establishment. His years of professional experience from performances
at jazz festivals, concert halls, cabarets and hotels to dignitaries such as President George
H.W. Bush Snr. and the late Chinese President Yang Shangkun. Louis has performed for several
Presidents of Singapore—Devan Nair, Wee Kim Wee, S.R. Nathan and Tony Tan.
In the past 60 years he has mentored young up-and-coming jazz players like Iskandar Ismail,
Jeremy Monteiro, Don Gomes, Andrew Lim, Tan Wei Xiang, Eddie Jensen and Jojo Martinez to
mention a few, which contributed to the development of Singapore’s music.
Louis received the COMPASS Artistic Excellence Award in 1997, the SingJazz Lifetime
Achievement Award in 2014 and the Cultural Medallion in 2018. He has been a Fellow of the
London College of Music since 2013.

ALEMAY FERNANDEZ VOCALS
Hailed by Time Out magazine as one of Singapore’s “best-
loved entertainers”, Alemay Fernandez is a veteran performer
in the Asian jazz scene. In her illustrious 19-year career, she
has performed with the likes of The Count Basie Orchestra,
The Duke Ellington Orchestra, David Foster, Gregory Porter,
Ernie Watts, Randy Brecker, Antonio Hart, Mitch Frohman,
Jay Anderson, Lewis Nash, Ed Cherry, Incognito, Ray Parker
Jr, The Platters’ Bobby Soul, William Close & The Earth Harp
Collective, and opened for Laura Fygi and Benny Golson.
She has sung for A-listers like Kevin Spacey, Ethan Hawke,
Joss Stone, Kurt Elling, Lea Salonga, Paloma Picasso, Serena
Williams as well as Presidents and Prime Ministers.
Alemay is known for her sultry tone, powerhouse vocals and an onstage presence that keeps the
audience eating out of the palm of her hand. Her album of originals Hard To Imagine launched
to a sold-out concert at Esplanade in July 2016 to rave reviews. Since then, she has toured the
album in Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Colombo, Hanoi as well as a U.S. tour in the Summer of 2017
where she headlined at the legendary Birdland Jazz Club in NY.
As an educator, Alemay has worked with vocal students of all ages, conducted vocal and
performance workshops, and has been a lecturer in the Vocal Faculty at the Lasalle College of
The Arts Singapore since 2012.
TONY LAKATOS SAXOPHONE
Tony Lakatos was born into a musician family in Hungary,
where his father was a famous gypsy violinist. Lakatos
picked up the violin first at the age of six, and began to
play the saxophone when he was 15. He won a National Jazz
Competition in 1977, and graduated from the jazz department
of the Bela Bartok Conservatory in Budapest in 1979.
Thereafter, Lakatos moved to Germany in 1981, where he

Hof. Lakatos also became the first Hungarian musician to appear on the Gavin Report Top Ten on American Jazz Music Radio with his albums.

concerts. To date, he has played the saxophone in about 300 LP and CD recordings as a

JENS BUNGE HARMONICA
“We must welcome Jens Bunge to the growing ranks of
chromatic harmonica players in jazz(...) Jens has a round tone
and technique, supported by musicianship. Good luck, the road
is not easy but you’ve got the conviction and the equipment.”
– Toots Thielemans
At the age of 18, he began to teach himself to play the chromatic
harmonica. Influenced by the recordings of Belgium harmonica
player Toots Thielemans, he soon found his passion for jazz.
In the mid ’80s he began to perform with local big bands and
jazz groups, receiving more and more acknowledgement for
his melodic improvisation style. In the following years, Bunge made guest performances with the
German Jazz Youth Orchestra BuJazzO (conducted by Peter Herbolzheimer) and jazz musicians
such as Art Farmer, Barbara Dennerlein, Emil Mangelsdorff, Judy Roberts and Patricia Barber.
As a “Master of the Harmonica” he has been performing and conducting jazz workshops at
harmonica festivals all over the world, in South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and
Kuala Lumpur, Merate Musica in Italy and the SPAH Convention in St. Louis/USA. Alternating with
Jamey Aebersold, he was a long-time regular writer for the jazz column of the magazine The Harmonica Educator.
