National Schools Partnership and Into Film with Pathé are delighted to bring you Suffragette – Social Changers.

This brand new and free educational resource for students aged 11 to 19 across the UK celebrates the cinema release of Suffragette on Monday 12th October 2015, to bring the struggle and achievements of the suffragettes to life for a new generation. Please note that the film has a 12a rating, so playing the trailer to 11-year-olds will be at your discretion.

The programme encourages the whole school to celebrate and develop a true appreciation for the social changers who forged the democratic society we live in today. Students will draw parallels between life now and life over 100 years ago, reflecting on the precious rights and liberties we now enjoy thanks to the struggle of those who fought to win them. They will also investigate what social changes still need to be made and the contemporary figures who are fighting for them.

The full resource can be downloaded at www.nationalschoolspartnership/suffragetteresource. It uses the film trailer and images from the Museum of London’s suffragette collection to offer all you need to deliver an introductory assembly and a follow-up lesson, and create an educational and inspirational Social Changers corridor display.

The learning activities in this resource are mapped across the curriculum for all four UK nations, including citizenship, history, English, PSHE, art and design and drama. It will also help to develop whole-school SMSC. See Suffragette – Social Changers curriculum links for the full educational links for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

*The assembly could be conducted as a whole school if this is possible, or with each year group/in form time if this is more practical. It is recommended to deliver the assembly to the students first before conducting the lesson.

Parliament Week: 16 to 22 November 2015

If your students enjoy their Suffragette – Social Changers assembly and lesson, then encourage them to get involved in this year’s Parliament Week. The focus for 2015 is the future of democracy, which is a great way to bring to life the importance of voting and making a difference. Young people are being encouraged to find out about people who changed history and consider what the future of democracy should look like – to be inspired to get involved with Parliament and #dodemocracy.

ABOUT SUFFRAGETTE,

THE FILMABOUT SUFFRAGETTE, THE FILM

With an all-star cast including Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep, Suffragette is the moving first film about the remarkable untold story of the real foot soldiers of the suffragette movement. These were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalised and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality. The story of Maud – one of the suffragette foot soldiers – is as gripping and visceral as any thriller. An inspirational story told by women, about women, for everyone.

The acclaimed film will be released in cinemas on Monday 12th October 2015.

There will be a free screening of Suffragette for schools in London at the annual Into Film Festival this November. Register here: www.intofilm.org/festival
