Resolution of the Session of the

St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church in New Orleans

WHEREAS, Stanley E. Morrison, who passed away on October 3, 2014, was a member of

this Church for nearly fifty years, and served it wherever and whenever he was called, including as

deacon, elder and treasurer of the Church;

WHEREAS, he welcomed all he encountered with courtesy and friendship, he always sought

for a way to help people, he discharged every task calmly with steadiness and precision, and he was

generous with his time, talent and treasure with the Church and others;

WHEREAS, in every respect he was a humble servant of the Church and a Christian

gentleman; and

WHEREAS, the service rendered by him to the Church is inestimable in its value;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that by this Resolution, the session expresses its

lasting gratitude for the life and ministry of Stanley E. Morrison; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be delivered to Stanley E.

Morrison’s family.

October 5, 2014

The Session of St. Charles Ave. Presbyterian Church was called to order by Moderator, Dr. Don Frampton, on October 5, 2014. Minutes of Stated Meeting of Session 

October 27, 2014  

 

Call to Order – Dr. Don Frampton, Moderator 

The Moderator called the meeting to order with prayer, at 6:00 PM in the Frampton Fellowship 

Hall at the church. 

 

ATTENDANCE:

A quorum was present. 

 

Meditation, Prayer –Scott Zander, Chair Stewardship  

‐ Scott talked about how the media portrays that we live in difficult and troubling times.  He reflected 

back to the sixties when our leaders were assaulted and segregation was the law of the land.  Yet in 

1971 Marvin Gaye recorded a contemporary and insightful song “God is Love” from the Biblical 

reference to 1 John, Chapter 4, Verse 8.  “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is 

love.”   Scott then played the song as the heart of his devotional.  The lyrics are attached. 

‐ Scott closed with prayer. 

   

Moderator’s Report ‐ Dr. Don Frampton   

‐ The Moderator introduced Rev. Jim Stayton to the Session.  Jim responded that it was a joy to 

be here and that he was looking forward to getting to know each of us better.  Don informed the 

Session that Jim’s schedule was to be at church on Monday and Wednesday while Phil Stagg was 

scheduled for Sunday and Monday. 

           

Clerk’s Report – Robbert Vorhoff (John Pearce, Assistant Clerk)  

‐ ACTION:   The Clerk asked Don Frampton to request a motion for approval of Minutes for the 

following meetings (that were included in the October  Session packet): 

o Session Meeting – September 29, 2014 (stated) 

o Congregational Meeting – October 12, 2014  

A motion was made, and seconded to approve the minutes as circulated.  The Session voted and 

the motion carried unanimously.

‐ ACTION:  The Clerk asked Don Frampton to request a motion for approval for Julianne Nice to 

be installed as an Elder in the current class contingent on Session hearing her “Faith Journey” at 

the January Session meeting.  A motion was made, and seconded.  The Session voted and the 

motion carried unanimously. 

‐ Information:  The Clerk informed Session that a resolution was being prepared to present to the 

family of elder Stanley E. Morrison, who passed away on October 3rd.  Attached is a copy of the 

resolution that will be approved at the Session meeting on Dec. 1st. 

 

Team Reports: 

Christian Education – Crorey Lawton, Chair (Cathy Franklin, VC)  

o The Chair talked about the Rev. Dr. William Willimon who will give the upcoming 

Lupberger Lecture November 1st from 9:00am till noon, and will teach Sunday School 

November 2 at 9:30 a.m.  In addition, Dr. Willimon will preach at both services on the 

2nd.  The entire church is excited about Dr. Willimon, a Methodist minister who is 

recognized as one of America’s top preachers and teachers.   

 

Congregational Care – Caty Flower, Chair (Margo Phelps, VC)  

o Caty discussed the process the church goes through to keep its official membership rolls 

current.  Her team has performed its annual membership review. 

o ACTION:  Caty moved that the Session approve the attached listing of Individuals 

Recommended for Inactive Member Status.  A motion was made, and seconded.  The 

Session voted and the motion carried unanimously. 

 

Congregational Life – Lilla Wright, Chair (Geoff Snodgrass, VC)  

o Lilla noted that the planned golf outing at Audubon Park on October 26th  has been 

   canceled and will be rescheduled in the spring of 2015.    

                 

Community Ministry – Robert Edgecombe, III, Chair (Amber Beezley, VC) 

o Robert Edgecombe reported that Sean Tate has been hired as the Director of the 

church’s Carrollton Christmas Camp.  He stated the Director Tate would make a 

presentation to the congregation on Nov. 2nd and would attend a Session meeting in 

December. 

o Robert reminded Session of upcoming events supporting partner organizations: 

New Orleans Mission will have a Nov. 11th event at the WWII Museum. 

Eden House has a fundraiser on Nov. 5th at the Audubon Tea Room. 

o Robert requested that Wayne Willcox forward Sean Tate’s resume to John Hope, Chair 

of personnel. 

 

Finance – Lee Randall, Chair (Debbie Rees, VC) 

o Mr. Randall directed Elders to the Financial Report for September included in the 

October Session Packet.  He stated the church was ok with cash flow and he was 

optimistic the year would end strong.

o Mr. Randall reminded Session Chairs of larger teams that budget meetings will be held 

on December 2.  Wayne Wilcox needs Team Chairs to submit their budgets by Nov. 15th. 

o Mr. Randall informed Session that the church received $4,593.95 for a Right‐of‐Way on 

a piece of property the church owns in Calcasieu Parish. 

 

Member Involvement – Beth Poe, Chair (Mike Pugh, VC) 

o Beth reminded Session of the Annual Elder Retreat that will be held on Friday and 

Saturday, January 23rd and 24th.  The Friday night event will be held at the home of John 

Martin.  The Saturday retreat and Session meeting will be at the church from 9 am till 

about 3 pm. 

 

Membership – Trey Sundmaker, Chair (Jack Little, VC)  

o Trey reported on the new member orientation held on October 19th.  He felt the new 

format without Team Chairs worked well.  Phil Stagg and the team did a short history of 

the church and briefly talked about its numerous ministries.  There were a lot of 

questions from the new members. 

o Trey directed Elders to the membership report included in the session packet. 

 

Personnel – John Hope, Chair (Hans Jonassen, VC) – No Report 

 

Property – Jeff Mazzanti, Chair (Bruce Peterson, VC)  

o The Chair reported on the work of team.   The Team was going through a due diligence 

on the estimated repairs for the ongoing leakage problems in the sanctuary.  The church 

was hiring an independent consultant to review the proposed scope of the project.  

Total current cost of repairs is estimated at about $500,000.  Michael Bell is assisting in 

identifying an expert.  The expenditure may come before Session in December for a 

vote. 

o Jeff reported that the next project for his team would be the refurbishment of the 2nd 

floor for the Nursery School. 

 

Stewardship – Scott Zander, Chair (John Dunlap, VC)  

o Scott reported the team had received pledges totaling over $1 million.  About $200,000 

in pledges came in on Dedication Sunday, October 19th. 

o There are about 150 giving units yet to pledge. 

o In a week, there will be follow‐up calls and Scott was looking for volunteers to assist in 

this effort.  Harry Hardin and Caty Flower offered their services. 

 

World Mission – Renee Peck, Chair (Henrietta Harris, VC) ‐ No Report 

 

Worship & Music – Jim Rumsfeld, Chair (Judith Halverson, VC) 

o ACTION:  Jim Rumsfeld asked for and received approval of the following Baptism: 

Avery Antoinette Danner – November 9, 2014 at 10:30 am service

o Jim reported that Communion would be offered at the 10:30 service on November 23rd.    

He asked for volunteers to assist in that service. 

o Jim reported that Heritage Sunday was a big success and he thanked those who helped 

put it together. 

     

Youth and Young Adults ‐‐ Lee Anne Trichel, Chair  

o Lee Anne reported that the Junior High Fall Retreat went well. 

o She was pleased with the number of students participating in the fall events. 

o She reminded Session that Youth Sunday would be November 16th at the 10:30 service.  

She hoped all would come out in support of this effort.  

 

Pastoral Care – The Pastors   

‐ Rev. Phil Stagg reported that communion had been delivered to a number of shut‐in members 

of the church by both pastors, as assisted by two elders. 

 

New Business / Other Matters:   

‐ Mike O’Keefe directed Session to his report on the October Presbytery meeting included in the 

October Session packet.  He was happy to report all our attendees were present for the entire 

meeting. 

‐ David Mize reviewed the report by the Long Range Planning Task Force included in the October 

Session packet. 

 

Staff Reports: 

Phil Stagg  No Report 

Steven Blackmon  

o Steven reported that the choir had recently lost four altos and he was actively working 

to recruit more. 

Andy Fox      

o Reported that there were 20 junior high students at the fall retreat in Denham Springs.  

Michele Murphy    

o Reported on the Cuba trip by members of SCAPC. 

Emma Cate Pegues   

o Emma reported on the Rebuilding Hope Mission trip.   

o She reported that Rhino’s 9th birthday celebration on October 9th was a great party. 

Wayne Willcox    No Report 

 

Closing Prayer – Phil Stagg offered a closing prayer.  The Moderator then asked for a motion to adjourn.   

A motion was passed and Session was adjourned at approximately 7:25 pm.
