To All Harris County Employees:

Our indication of a good employer is the number of men and women who have continued in the employer’s service for a length of time. Loyal and cooperative employees are the foun-dation of every success of our county government, and Harris County is essentially fortunate in having so many highly motivated people. The success of our county is directly related to our employees today and the people who will be with us in the future. Each individual, regardless of position or title, plays a key role in our continued progress.

In appreciation for your contribution, and as an acknowledge-ment that grows each year of service, we have established the Service Awards Program. With each five years of service your awards will become more valuable, not only because of the con-tent, but because of the years of service it represents.

An award certificate will be issued for five years of service and at each consecutive five year milestone. A lapel pin will be also awarded at ten and fifteen years of service; starting at twenty years of service and at each subsequent five year period, the employee will have the opportunity to choose an award from a designated selection of items along with the certificate.

We hope you will display the award with pride as visible evidence of your contribution to our County’s development, and with the realization that, as our County grows and prospers, so will the people who make this possible.

Q. How does the program work?

A. The Service Awards Program works with an annual budget, estimated according to the projected number of employees to be awarded upon completion of the re-quired years of service. At the beginning of each month we receive from the Audi-tor’s Office a list of employees that became eligible for a service award during the previous month; then the certificates, pins and order forms will be issued and distrib-uted to the departments. There is a designated Service Awards Coordinator at each department, usually the payroll clerk. Contact your department for internal distribu-tion procedures.

Q. Who is eligible for Service Awards?

A. Employees who have completed the required “Creditable Service Months” for each 5 year milestone. (See Chart Below) Note: Leave of Absence, FMLA, Docked Time, Military Leave and any other leave without pay will affect your creditable months of service at Harris County.

Q. If I leave my employment with the County for some time, and then return, will my previous time will be considered for a service award?

A. As of 1996, the County no longer bridges time worked for purposes other than retirement. When you leave the County the time elapsed for re-hiring with the same or different department can be no longer than 7 consecutive days. If it is longer, at your return, you will basically start all over for benefits, vacation and service awards.

Q. I just had an anniversary, when should I receive my award?

A. The list of awardees is issued at the beginning of each month, and lists the names of all employees that completed an anniversary milestone the previous month. Once the awards are issued, the Service Awards Coordinator of each department will pick-up the awards. Each department has different procedures for distributing the awards to its employees. Contact your department directly for more information.

Q. I had an anniversary several months ago and I’m still waiting for my award. What should I do?

A. First, contact the Service Awards Coordinator of your department to inquire about your award. If they don’t have record of your award, you can contact the Service Awards Program Coordinator (see contact information at the back of this brochure) to inquire about your award. We will research your service at Harris County to determine your eligibility. n rare occasions, and due to certain factors like a break in service, leave of absence, FMLA, docked time, military leave, name or department change, etc., eligible employees may not be included in the monthly listing at the time they reach their required creditable service months. For this rea-son, we give careful consideration and research every request for past due service awards to determine eligibility. If applicable, the award will be issued.
