In 2019, Friends of JCAS Pets fosters rescued 504 dogs and cats and, through our Paws UP Mississippi initiative, helped low income JC families get their pets vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered (more on page 4). We also held our annual fundraisers, Paddle for Paws Poker Float and a Draw Down, and participated in several community events to get the word out about what we do and the animals we are caring for. Rescue is hard work and expensive – but it is also rewarding to know you played a role in transforming a life. Our cat fosters, during the Lei-Z Cats Summer Adoption Event, get creative to help find the “purrfect” homes for their fosters. Our adoptable cats are posted on PetFinder and placed in local pet stores after they complete their vetting. Every two weeks our ‘Friends’ van is put to work taking loads of precious cargo, our foster dogs, to Slidell or Mobile where they catch an 18-wheeler transport truck that will deliver them to their new families in the Northeast. Whether the vetting process took a few weeks or a few months, transport day is always bitter sweet for our fosters, but knowing they will be meeting their new “forever families” soon is what it’s all about. By purchasing a FJCASP Car Tag, you not only help promote our rescue, the funds raised from the sales pay for the expenses related to our van including gas, insurance, and maintenance.

This allows us to use our monetary donations to care for animals in need, like 8 year old Patches (now Charlie). He was 42lbs. when found with infected wounds and mange. He was in such bad condition, the shelter considered putting him out of his misery. But now he’s a VERY happy and healthy 60+ pound boy being spoiled in his new home.

We have begun our 4th year of Paws Up Mississippi, a community outreach branch of our rescue that focuses on providing low income pet owners in Jackson County with access to low cost/no cost basic vetting. Through a grant from the Jack A. and Gertrude W. Wilson Animal Welfare Fund Gulf Coast Community Foundation, we provided the following at no cost to the owner in 2019:

• 214 annual vaccinations and microchips • 184 spay/neuters (a total of 305 since 2017)

We were recently awarded an additional grant to continue the program into 2020. We will be accepting applications for 100 pets at a time. The link to the application will be posted on our facebook page while there is availability.

Please be responsible and SPAY & NEUTER your pets. Puppies spayed before their first heat cycle have virtually 0% risk of developing mammary cancer. This risk increases to 8% if spayed after the 2nd cycle. By 2.5 years of age, spaying offers no decreased risk benefit – but DOES prevent unwanted litters and saves lives!

Be An Animal Advocate Animal Cruelty and neglect are a problem in Mississippi. Our state has some of the most lenient laws in the country regarding animal cruelty. Even the most horrific cases of cruelty can only be charged as misdemeanors and people often only pay fines. Animal Advocacy Initiative of Mississippi is working hard to change this. Visit their website www.animaladvocacyms.org for current legislation, to find your local representative, and to learn more about getting involved!
