Improve your Swing Feel (L#20)

Your Action Plan

1. Ok, first things first. If you want improve your swingfeel you've got to start listening to the big jazz cats likeRay Brown, Ron Carter, Jimmy Blanton, Oscar Pettiford,Paul Chambers etc. By simply listening to these guysday in and day out, your swing feel will be enhanced.You've got live and breathe the music!

Here's a short list of albums I recommend you should check out:

• ‘We take Requests’ by Oscar Peterson with Ray Brownon bass.

• ‘Bass On Top’ by Paul Chambers• ‘Speak No Evil’ by Miles Davis with Ron Carter on Bass.• ‘Blues & Roots ‘ by Charles Mingus.

2. As a bass player your right hand man is the drummerand it's a must to not only understand the bass, but alsothe feel of the drums. This will give you a great headstart when it comes to playing with differentdrummers, the aim being that you can instantly lock inwith any drummer and understand their feel and whattheir influences could be.

When you're listening to these great bass players, after a while I want you to listen to the drums. Try and almost blank out everything else except the drums. Listen to the ride cymbal, listen to the hi-hat and toms and how they feel. Compare the drummers and try to hear their different feel.

I also recommend using the 'isolation process' where you listen to a piece of music concentrating on only one instrument at a time. Piano, guitar, sax, etc. Really listen to what they're playing. How they're phrasing. It's so easy as a bass player to only listen to other bass players. This is a big mistake. You should try and listen to all the instruments systematically. Personally I like to do this week by week. For instance I'll have one week of concentrating on only drummers, listening, comparing and analyzing each drummer. Then after that week repeat this process through the other instruments.

3. This tutorial's focus was based on the relationshipbetween the 4/4 feel and the 6/8 feel so it's importantto listen to music that mixes these two feels so we havean insight into what we're trying to recreate. Greatexamples of this can be found in Afro Cuban music, butmy favorite example is Michael Brecker’s famous tune'African Skies'. When listening to it, try counting 4, thenswitching to 6. Go back and forth between the two untilit feels comfortable. Then try playing the exercisespresented in the video tutorial.
