TRANSCRIPT
During long weekends and holiday breaks, your house or apartment could
be targeted by thieves because no one is there. In the past, thieves have
targeted computers, stereos, video game consoles, DVD players, bikes, and
other high-value portable items. Be intentional when leaving for breaks so
that your brand new flat-screen TV is still there when you get back!

Heating Your Apartment
In the units that are heated by the landlord, the heat must be on from
September 15th through June 15th. The temperature must not be less
than 68 degrees Fahrenheit between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. and 64
degrees Fahrenheit between 11:01 p.m. and 6:59 a.m.. There is a maxi-
mum allowable temperature of 78 degrees. If you have any concerns
about your heat over the winter months, contact your landlord. If you
don’t get a response, contact Inspectional Services for the City of Boston
at 617-635-5300.
Lighting is one of the easiest places to start saving energy. Using
ENERGY STAR qualified lights in five fixtures can save more than
$65 a year in energy costs.
Turn off your lights when leaving a room! Turning off just one
60-watt incandescent bulb that would otherwise burn eight hours a
day can save about $15 per year!
Consumer electronics play an increasingly larger role in your home's
energy consumption, accounting for 15 percent of household electric-
ity use. Many consumer electronics products use energy even when
switched off. Unplug any phone chargers or power adapters
when not in use and use a power strip as a central “turn off” point
when you are done using equipment.
Limit showers to 10 minutes to conserve heat and water!
During cold weather, take advantage of the sun's warmth by keeping
drapes open during daylight hours.
Scrape dishes instead of rinsing them before loading the dishwasher.
Use cold water to wash laundry when possible and try to wash
full loads. Hot water heating accounts for about 90 percent of the
energy your machine uses to wash clothes. Switching to cold water
can save the average household more than $30-$40 a year.
