Improving Lives Together

Dear Friends of Mercy,

At Mercy Health Foundation, we continually seek community partnerships to directly impact access to the highest quality care for patients in the River Valley. Through your giving, you join our physicians, nurses, extended care teams and leaders in carrying out our mission to “bring to life the healing ministry of Jesus through our compassionate care and exceptional service.” Our community’s health care needs will always outpace our resources, but your charitable contributions enable Mercy to serve all who seek care, regardless of their ability to pay.

Quality health care is a cornerstone for the health of our region. The most transformative health care initiatives start by simply caring for our neighbors. We value you as a partner and as a community leader promoting positive systemic change. On behalf of the Foundation and those we serve, please accept our deepest gratitude for your generosity and willingness to join us in our mission.

Sincerely,

Patrick Pendleton Executive Director Mercy Health Foundation Fort Smith

Meet Kalen GriffinA Mercy Grateful PatientWhen Kalen Griffin enrolled in lineman school, he never dreamed that an accident could leave him paralyzed. But a 45-foot fall resulted in a broken back, bruised spinal cord, broken wrists and several other serious injuries. Kalen was paralyzed from the waist down. After spinal surgery and in-home therapy, Kalen was prescribed physical therapy at Mercy.

Before arriving for physical therapy, Kalen hadn’t walked for five months. Because of donors like you, Kalen was fortunate to benefit from a specialized piece of equipment called a LiteGait®. This physical therapy training device can bear the weight of a patient and allow a clinician to assist a patient’s legs and pelvis to achieve proper gait, or walking patterns.

Kalen’s physical therapist, Diane Hubbard, is so proud of the progress he has made and how the LiteGait has helped. “There is really no way that the physical therapists would have been able to hoist him up to walk as much as they did without the LiteGait harness supporting his body weight,” she said.

Kalen recognized how much the LiteGait and his physical therapists at Mercy have helped him progress. “My legs strengthened tremendously in the first two weeks of using the LiteGait - more than in the entire time since the accident,” he said.

Mercy Health Foundation’s Women with a Mission giving society chose to fund the LiteGait with a $22,500 gift. Now Kalen and other patients like him can get the care they need while staying close to home.

The donations received through Women with a Mission truly make an impact within our community. Kalen is ready to keep working hard with

his Mercy physical therapists on the LiteGait and he is hopeful for the future. “God has plans for me,” Kalen concluded. “He saved my life.”

Mercy Fort Smith’s non-ambulatory transportation program began in 2015 when Mercy Health Foundation, aware of the growing need to help patients with transportation issues, purchased three passenger vans. Several years later, the program has grown to include five vehicles and benefits the hospital in many ways. Ensuring patients have access to reliable transportation helps mitigate reasons why a patient may skip an appointment or life-saving treatment. The most frequent users of the program are patients from wound care, whose wounds often need dozens of treatments for adequate healing. Oncology patients receiving chemotherapy infusions also frequently use the transportation program.

In FY18 the Foundation continued to help the program by investing $52,513 to purchase fuel and fund driver salaries. On average, the program provides about 600 transports and serves more than 150 individual patients per month. “Mercy Fort Smith is committed to providing unsurpassed care, compassion and comfort to those in need. Unfortunately, many within our communities do not have access to the medical care they need due to a lack of available transportation. For these individuals, it can be nearly impossible to seek adequate medical attention,” said Julie Stec, Mercy Hospital Fort Smith’s chief operating officer. “Such individuals are often disabled, poor or rural residents. Through Mercy’s non-ambulatory transportation program, these patients are able to receive the care they need.”Thanks to your generosity, patients participating in the non- ambulatory transportation program may experience better health outcomes than otherwise would have been possible. This is a vital service that keeps patients healthy and saves lives.

Transportation Program Helps Ensure Better Health for Residents of the River Valley

More than 150 patients each month rely on Mercy Fort Smith’s transportation program to get to their appointments.

Charity Ball Sets Record Attendance In its 50th year, Mercy Health Foundation’s Charity Ball is as meaningful and successful as ever. A record-setting 1,200 people attended the event on December 8, 2017, at the Fort Smith Convention Center, generating over $475,000 for the work of Mercy Health Foundation. Not only did Charity Ball raise funds for critical projects at Mercy, but it also served as a commemoration for the 165th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy in Fort Smith. It was an evening of celebration!

One of the highlights of the evening, the Charity Ball direct appeal, raised $44,000 for Shepherd’s Light, a navigation program for Mercy oncology patients. Receiving a diagnosis of cancer can be frightening and overwhelming, and finding the best path forward can be difficult. This specialized program will help patients and their families navigate cancer’s complex treatment schedules and therapies.

Each year Charity Ball aims to improve access to the quality health care our community deserves. Through the faithful generosity of donors like you, we are able to continue to bring this vision to life.

The Charity Ball crowd enjoys the Emerald City Band.
