Durham County Council is updating its Customer First strategy, which sets out how customer services are provided in person, by telephone and online. Latest figures show that council staff answer more than 910,000 telephone enquiries and deal with a further 270,000 enquir- ies in person at customer access points across the county. The updated strategy will set out how customer services will be provided over the next three years, taking into account changes in technology, customer expectations and financial resources. A consultation on the proposed strategy is asking residents for their feedback on how they would like to be able to contact the council, pro- posals to allow residents to check their requests and reports via an online login and password system and plans to introduce appointments for council tax and housing benefit enquiries. Alan Patrickson, head of projects and business services at Durham County Council, said: “This strategy will help to shape the ways in which we provide customer services and the ways in which people will be able to contact the council. “We want to ensure we provide ways for people to contact us which are convenient for them and which allow them to report their requests, issues and concerns easily. “It is important that we take into account people’s feedback and we are asking people to take part in the consultation.” To take part in the con- sultation and see a draft of the Customer First Strategy people should visit www.durham.gov.uk/ consultation Residents can request a paper version of the survey by calling 03000 260 000. Improving customer services Young Carers As more and more young people are faced with the challenge of becoming young carers, Ferryhill Town Council and the Fer- ryhill E-Café have decided to join forces with Family Action at The Bridge Young Carers Service, to help raise awareness of the issues faced by the many young carers living in the area, and the challenges they face on a daily basis. The Council has therefore signed up to the Young Carers Charter, the first Council in England to do so. Over the past few months the young people from The E-cafe, along with Youth Coordinator Laura Langdale, have worked hard to raise awareness of young carers and what it is like to be one. They offer positive activities four evenings a week to young people aged 8 to 17 years old and invite any young carers to go along and join in the fun. To celebrate the success of gaining the Charter, Ferryhill Town Council and Ferryhill E-cafe are holding a presentation evening on Monday 10th February at St Luke’s Church Hall. Local footballing hero Jason Steele, goalkeeper from Middesbrough FC, will be presenting the award. The night will be for family and friends to celebrate the achievement. Police are urging resi- dents of Bishop Middle- ham to remain vigilant after a number of vehicles and property was damaged over recent weeks. Chilton Town Council was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Councillor George Elliott, from The Pentlands who recently passed away.George started his political career in 1980 as a Parish Councillor, serving until May 2007 when he retired.George was an active member of the allotment committee and had a vast knowledge of growing produce. He set up the Leek Club at Chilton & Win-dlestone Workingmen’s Club and was secretary of the Fishing Club. George deserves to be credited for his long standing political career, during which he was always dedicated and extremely passionate about Chilton. George will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Members and officers of Chilton Town Council would like to extend their heart-felt sympathies to George’s wife of 60 years, son Keven, daughter Lyn and other family members.Mayor of Chilton, Councillor Elizabeth Bruce commented, “I have known George for many years. He will be sadly

Kevin Gargett, 27, of Bran-cepeth Road in Ferryhill, has recently been ordered by Newton Aycliffe magis-trates to pay £170 in fines and costs, and has received six points on his driving licence after driving without insurance. Gargett admitted to driving a VW

Golf on 13th June 2013 on Merrington Road in Kirk Merrington. The court heard that the car had been insured, only the policy was cancelled due to problems with payment. Gargett confessed he was going through financial dif-ficulties at the time.

Enter CIC Arts Enabled Classes

Inclusiveness is of para-mount importance to Enter CIC. Passionate in the belief that the world of artistic and creative activities should be open to all, irrespective of age, experience, ability, or complex learning re-quirement, witnessing first-hand how young people with specific needs benefit from such programmes.A spokesperson from Enter CIC said, “Our ability to recognise that everyone learns dif-ferently is key to our success. When we devise programmes we try to identify the preferred

learning style of the in-dividual and then we try to centre the programme around this learning re-quirement/preference. “We have successfully integrated young people with specific learning requirements into our mainstream programmes. For some young people this is not possible and a one-to-one approach is more beneficial to them”.All Arts Enabled staff are CRB-checked, Pae-diatric First Aid-trained and Sherborne-trained to better support partici-pants.Young people on the Arts

Enabled programme will benefit from: Coordina-tion skills development, musical confidence and skill building, personal confidence, social inter-action, speaking and lis-tening and responding to stimuli. This is achieved through a wide range of performance and creative activities such as: drumming, guitar playing, keyboards, dance and floor play, speech and drama. For more information about this programme, call 01740 655437. Sessions run on Monday evenings (please call to book a time).

After reports from con-cerned residents that off road bikes and quads have been riding around the Carrs Nature Reserve and Ferryhill streets, four male youths have been

spoken to and issued with Traffic 183 Warning Notices, which will last for 12 months. If they are seen riding the bikes and quads will be seized by police.

New Dance Generation first to take street dance exam

Misused bikes/quads to be seized

On Sunday 8th December 2013, 60 pupils from New Dance Generation from the age of 4 to 15 took their first ever exam in street dance. New Dance Generation are the first dance school in the whole of County Durham to offer the UDO street dance syllabus, where candidates take exams performing set routines one by one for an examiner. The examiner was Bly Richards, a professional

house dancer who works at Pineapple Dance Studios in London. He has performed on the X factor, Cheryl Cole tour, Madonna music videos and many more. Bly was very impressed with the children and how much they had achieved in such a very short space of time. A week after the exams principle teacher Hannah Wilkinson received the results. Every child passed their exam and the UDO company even said “Wow,

these are one of the best set of results we have ever had”.Seven of the children received the top bracket marks – distinction which is very difficult to achieve, especially in the first exam. Caitlin Watson, from Cleeves Cross Primary school, got the highest mark of the day with 84%. The children will celebrate NDG’s success on Saturday 1st March when it is their first birthday party!

The premises at Chilton Primary School are multi-use - housing a private day care (children from 0-5 years), toddlers attend-ing One Point activities, school-age children and members of the communi-ty, some aged 80+, attend-ing numerous activities at the college. Due to the extensive age range of users, the School/Community College and One Point Service decided that it would be of benefit

to jointly purchase a defi-brillator for the building, which would ensure a life saving device would be on-hand should the need ever arise. The delivery of the defibrillator is expected within the next couple of weeks when staff will be trained in its use. As an extension of this purchase, free basic First Aid training will be avail-able to members of the community. In conjunction with the

British Heart Founda-tions “Ramp up the Red” campaign, Chilton Commu-nity College will be holding a fund raising Coffee Morning on Saturday 15th February from 10am to 12 noon. CPR demonstrations will take place, whilst the Change 4 Life team will also be attending to undertake mini Health MOTs and they will be available to talk about lifestyle changes. On 28th June 2014 there will be a 30 year reunion for the Ferryhill Compre-hensive School class of 84. So far the night will include an 80’s disco, a buffet and a raffle, with all proceeds going to Cancer Care and The Asthma Society, to honour those classmates that are no longer with us. Although there has been

a positive response from classmates who use social media, the organisers are trying to get the message out to all those concerned, and encourage them to contact others. The event will take place at The Hub in Ferryhill from 7-12pm on 28th June. There is to be an entry fee of £3 which will cover the costs

and anything remaining will go to the charities. All school leavers of 84 and any teachers during that time are welcome to attend. Those who wish to attend, or who would like to make a donation, should contact: Debra Walton (Marley) or Debbie Wrightson (Gray) on 07837004708 or via email [email protected].
