Many people are afraid to speak and write in English as they feel that they do not know English
grammar properly. Hence; they want to learn English grammar so that they can use the language
confidently. Consequently; they either start studying books on grammar or join some English coaching
class to learn English grammar.
However, let it be understood that as per experts trying to learn grammar by reading books on
grammar or by attending grammar classes does not help anyone to use language more correctly and
confidently. In fact it has the opposite effect. As per experts it makes the learners more confused.
Hence, most of the language experts do not advocate learning grammar as a standalone subject.
Functional grammar is learning the areas of grammar in which you make mistakes and focus on

2. Third person noun/pronoun is not in agreement with verb in present simple tense.
Ensure that third person noun/pronoun is agreement with verb in present simple
tense.
• They want to go to a movie. (Right)
• They wants to go to a movie. (Wrong)
3. Mistakes in use of correct tenses.
Ensure that the verbs are correct in tense & in active/passive voice.
• He finished his work yesterday. (Right)
• He finish his work yesterday. (Wrong)
5. Mistakes in subject verb agreements.
Ensure that the verbs are correct in tense & in active/passive voice
• Poor people have increased. (Right)
• Poor people has increased. (Wrong)
6. Mistakes on use of pronouns.
Ensure that pronouns have proper antecedents
• Boil the milk, if the child doesn’t like it cold. (Right)
• If the child doesn’t like cold milk, boil it. (Wrong)
7. Wrong prepositions have been used.
Ensure that correct prepositions are used
• We are interested in your painting. (Right)
• We are interested at your painting. (Wrong)
4. Mistakes in use of correct tenses.
Ensure that the verbs forms are correct
• They are trying to go on picnic. (Right)
• They have trying to go on picnic. (Wrong)
8. Wrong use of countable and non countable nouns.
Ensure proper adjectives for countable & uncountable noun
• Most of my friends came. (Right)
• Every one of my friend came. (Right)
• Most of my friend came (Wrong)
• Every one of my friends came. (Wrong)
9. Wrong parts of speech are used.
Ensure that proper parts of speech are used
• It was excellent work. (Right)
• It was excellence work. (Wrong)
10. Wrong conditional forms are used.
Methodology: This internet based program (Improve English Grammar in 10 Lessons) has been designed on self

about the mistake, series of wrong sentences having that particular mistake and also the corrected
