On 1 August 1711 the VOC Zuytdorp was dispatched from the Netherlands. Its destination was the trading port of Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia). The ship was carrying a load of newly minted Zeeland Hoedjesschelling 6 stuivers silver coins struck in 1711.

The Zuytdorp never arrived in Batavia and no search was ever undertaken. The whereabouts of VOC Zuytdorp was not known until the 20th century when the wreck site was

discovered on a remote part of the Western Australia coast between Kalbarri and Shark Bay. The ocean floor

at the site resembled a “sea of silver” with most of the 250,000 coins sent on the vessel still laying

with the wreck at the bottom of the ocean.

1910 King Edward VII year set • Issued during the final year of the

reign of Edward VII, Australia’s first national coinage arrived nearly a decade after Federation in 1901. Struck at the Royal Mint in London in the year that Edward died, only the threepence, sixpence, shilling and florin were issued, with these sterling silver type coins amongst the scarcest in the series.
