To ensure a long, safe and trouble free life for your motorcycle, maintenance should always becarried out by an authorised Triumph dealer.

Thank you for choosing a Triumph motorcycle. This motorcycle is the product of Triumph’suse of proven engineering, exhaustive testing, and continuous striving for superior reliability,safety and performance. Please read this owner’s handbook before riding inorder tobecomethoroughly familiar with the correct operation of your motorcycle’s controls, its features,capabilities and limitations.

This handbook includes safe riding tips, but does not contain all the techniques and skillsnecessary to ride a motorcycle safely. Triumph strongly recommends that all ridersundertake the necessary training to ensure safe operation of this motorcycle.

THE MOTORCYCLE

WARNING: This motorcycleis designed for on-road use

only. It isnot suitable for off-roaduse.

Off-road operation could lead to lossof control of the motorcycle resultingin an accident causing injury or lossof life.

WARNING: This motorcycleis not designed to tow a trailer

or be fitted with a sidecar. Fitting asidecar and/or a trailer may result inloss of control and an accident.

WARNING: This motorcycleis designed for use as a

two--wheeled vehicle capable ofcarrying a rider on his own, or a riderand one passenger (subject to apassenger seat being fitted).

The total weight of the rider, and anypassenger, accessories and luggagemust not exceed the maximum loadlimit of 207 kg (455 lbs).

FUEL.

WARNING: PETROL ISHIGHLY FLAMMABLE:

Always turn off the engine whenrefuelling.

Donot refuel oropen the fuel filler capwhile smoking or in the vicinity of anyopen (naked) flame.

Take care not to spill anypetrol on theengine, exhaust pipes or silencerswhen refuelling.

If petrol is swallowed, inhaled orallowed to get into the eyes, seekimmediate medical attention.

Spillage on the skin should beimmediately washed off with soapand water and clothing contaminatedwith petrol should immediately beremoved.

Burns and other serious skinconditions may result from contactwith petrol.

EXHAUST FUMES

WARNING: Never start yourengine or let it run for any

length of time in a closed area. Theexhaust fumes are poisonous andmaycause lossof consciousnessanddeath within a short time. Alwaysoperate your motorcycle in theopen--air or in an area with adequateventilation.

CRASH HELMET & CLOTHING

WARNING: When riding themotorcycle both rider and

passenger must always wear a crashhelmet, eye protection, gloves,trousers (close fitting around theknee and ankle) and a brightlycoloured jacket. Brightly colouredclothing will considerably increase arider’s (or passenger’s) visibility toother operators of road vehicles.Although full protection is notpossible, wearing correct protectiveclothing can reduce the risk of injurywhen riding.

WARNING: A crash helmet isone of the most important

pieces of riding gear as it offersprotection against head injuries. Youand your passenger’s crash helmetshould be carefully chosen andshould fit you or your passenger’shead comfortably and securely. Abrightly coloured helmetwill increasea rider’s (or passenger’s) visibility toother operators of road vehicles.

An open face helmet offers someprotection in an accident though a fullface helmet will offer more.

Always wear a visor or approvedgoggles to help vision and to protectyour eyes.

HANDLEBARS & FOOTRESTS

WARNING: The rider mustmaintain control of the

vehicle by keeping hands on thehandlebars at all times.

The handling and stability of amotorcycle will be adversely affectedif the rider removes his hands fromthe handlebars, resulting in loss ofcontrol or an accident.

WARNING: Footrestsprovided must always be

used by rider and passenger duringoperation of the vehicle.

By using the footrests, both rider andpassenger will reduce the risk ofinadvertent contact with anymotorcycle components and will alsoreduce the risk of injury fromentrapment of clothing.

RIDING

WARNING: Never ride themotorcycle when fatigued or

under the influence of alcohol orother drugs.

Riding when under the influence ofalcohol or other drugs is illegal.

Riding when fatigued or under theinfluence of alcohol or other drugsreduces the rider’s ability tomaintaincontrol ofmotorcycle andmay lead toloss of control and an accident.

WARNING: All ridersmust belicensed to operate the

motorcycle. Operation of themotorcycle without a licence is illegaland could lead to prosecution. Inaddition, operation without a licenceis dangerous and may lead to loss ofmotorcycle control and an accident.

WARNING: Always ridedefensively and wear the

protective equipment mentionedelsewhere in this foreword.Remember, in an accident, amotorcycle does not give the sameimpact protection as a car.

WARNING: This Triumphmotorcycle should be

operated within the legal speed limitsfor the particular road travelled.

Operating a motorcycle at highspeeds can be potentially dangeroussince the time available to react togiven traffic situations is greatlyreduced as road speed increases.

Always reduce speed in potentiallyhazardousdrivingconditions suchasbad weather or heavy traffic.

WARNING: Continuallyobserve and react to changes

in road surface, traffic and windconditions. All two--wheeled vehiclesare subject to external forces whichmay cause an accident. These forcesinclude but are not limited to:

S Wind draft from passing vehicles.

S Uneven or holed road surfaces.

S Bad weather.

S Rider error.

Always operate the motorcycle atmoderate speed andaway fromheavytraffic until you have becomethoroughly familiar with its handlingand operating characteristics. Neverexceed the legal speed limit.

PARKING

WARNING: Always turn offthe engine and remove the

ignition key before leaving themotorcycle unattended. By removingthe key, the risk of use of themotorcycle by unauthorised oruntrained persons is reduced.

When parking themotorcycle, alwaysremember the following:--

The engine and exhaust system willbe hot after riding. DO NOT parkwhere pedestrians, animals and/orchildren are likely to touch themotorcycle.

Do not park on soft ground or on asteeply inclined surface. Parkingunder theseconditionsmaycause themotorcycle to fall over.

PARTS & ACCESSORIES

WARNING: Owners shouldbe aware that the only

approved parts, accessories andconversions for any Triumphmotorcycle are those which carryofficial Triumph approval and arefitted to the motorcycle by anauthorised dealer.

Triumph does not accept any liabilitywhatsoever for defects caused by thefitting of non--approved parts,accessories or conversions or thefitting of any approved parts,accessories or conversions bynon--approved personnel.

In particular, it is extremelyhazardous to fit or replace parts oraccessories whose fitting requiresthe dismantling of, or addition to,either the electrical or fuel systemsand any such modification couldcause a safety hazard.

The fitting of any non--approvedparts, accessories or conversionsmay adversely affect the handling,stability or other aspect of themotorcycle operation which mayresult in an accident causing injury ordeath.

WARNING: Consult yourauthorised Triumph dealer

whenever there is doubt as to thecorrect or safe operation of thisTriumph motorcycle.

Remember that continued operationof an incorrectly performingmotorcyclemay aggravate a fault andmay also prejudice safety.

WARNING: Use of amotorcycle with bank angle

indicatorswornbeyond themaximumlimit (when 10 mm or more of theradiused tip of either front footrest isworn away) will allow the motorcycleto be banked to an unsafe angle.

Never change the setting of the brakepedal adjustment pushrod as thismayadverselyaffect thebank angleatwhich the bank angle indicatorscontact the ground.

Banking to an unsafe angle maycause instability, loss of control andan accident causing injury or death.

WARNING: Ensure allequipment which is required

by law is installed and functioningcorrectly.

The removal or alteration of themotorcycles lights, silencers,emission or noise control systemscan violate the law.

Incorrect or improper modificationmay adversely affect the handling,stability or other aspect of themotorcycle operation which mayresult in an accident causing injury ordeath.

WARNING: If the motorcycleis involved in an accident or

collision it must be taken to anauthorised Triumph dealer forinspection and repair. Any accidentcan cause damage to the motorcyclewhich, if not correctly repaired, maycause a second accident which mayresult in injury or death.

SPEEDOMETERThe speedometer indicates the road speedof the motorcycle.

In the speedometer face are the electronicodometer and trip meter. For details of theoperation of the odometer and trip meter,please refer to the next page.

TACHOMETERThe tachometer shows the engine speed inrevolutions perminute -- rpm (r/min). On theright side of the tachometer face is the ‘redzone’. Engine rpm (r/min) in the red zone isabove maximum recommended enginespeed and is also above the range for bestperformance.

CAUTION: Never allowengine RPM to enter the ‘red

zone’ as severe engine damage mayresult.

ODOMETER/TRIP METER

The odometer shows the total distance thatthe motorcycle has travelled. The tripmetershows the distance that the motorcycle hastravelled since the meter was last reset tozero.

To switch between the odometer and tripmeter display modes, press and release thechange-over/reset button situated betweenthe speedometer and tachometer. As wellas showing the distance travelled, in tripmeter mode the word ’TRIP’ is displayedand in odometer mode, the word ’ODO’ isdisplayed.

To reset the trip meter to zero, switch thedisplay to trip meter mode, then press andhold the button until the numerals return tozero.

FUEL GAUGE

The fuel gauge indicates the approximatelevel of fuel in the fuel tank.

When the fuel tank is full, thegaugewill pointto the ‘1’ mark and when empty, to the ‘0’mark. Other gauge markings indicateintermediate fuel levels between full andempty.

When the gauge pointer reaches thebeginning of the ‘red zone’ area of thegauge, refuel at the earliest opportunity.

COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE

The coolant temperature gauge indicatesthe temperature of the engine coolant. If thetemperature gauge needle moves into the‘red zone’ this indicates that the engine isoverheating.

CAUTION: Donot continue torun the engine if the gauge

needle enters the ‘redzone’ assevereengine damage may result.

WARNING LIGHTS

INDICATORS: When the indicatorswitch is turned to left or right, the

corresponding direction indicator lightflashes on and off.

LOWOIL PRESSURE: The low oilpressure warning light becomes

illuminated whenever the oil pressure isdangerously low (or the ignition switch is inthe ‘ON’ position with the engine notrunning). When the engine is running, thelight will remain off when sufficient oilpressure is present.

When starting the motorcycle, check thatthe light comes on when the ignition is in the‘ON’ position, but goes out as soon as theengine starts.

CAUTION: Stop the engineimmediately if the low oil

pressure warning light comes onduring normal operation. Do notrestart the engine until the fault hasbeen rectified.

Severe engine damage will resultfrom running the engine when the oilwarning light is illuminated.

HIGH BEAM:When the headlightsare switched on and the headlight

dip switch is set to ‘high beam’, the highbeam warning light will illuminate.

NEUTRAL: The neutral warninglight indicates when the

transmission is in neutral (no gear selected).The warning light will illuminate when thetransmission is in neutral with ignition switchin the ‘ON’ position.

LOW FUEL: The low fuel indicatorwill illuminate when there are

approximately 6 litres of fuel remaining inthe tank.

ENGINE MANAGEMENTSYSTEM MALFUNCTIONINDICATOR LIGHT:

Themalfunction indicator light for the enginemanagement system illuminates when theignition is switched on, remains illuminatedduringstarting, andgoes out shortly after theengine starts.

If the malfunction indicator light becomesilluminated during riding, a fault hasoccurred in the engine managementsystem. In this case the system will switchto ‘limp--home’ mode so that riding maycontinue. Contact an authorised Triumphdealer as soon as possible to have the faultchecked out and rectified.

WARNING: Do not continueto ride for a long period with

the malfunction indicator lightilluminated. The fault which hasoccurred may affect engineperformance and fuel consumption.Reduced engine performance couldcause a dangerous riding condition,leading to loss of control and anaccident

1. Key Number Tag

IGNITION KEY

In addition to operating the steeringlock/ignition switch, the ignition key isrequired to operate the seat lock and fueltank cap.

When the motorcycle is delivered from thefactory, two keys are supplied together witha small tag bearing the key number. Makea note of the key number andstore thesparekey andkey number tag in asafe placeawayfrom the motorcycle.

Your authorised Triumph dealer can supplya replacement key cut fromdetails of thekeynumber or can cut a new key using theoriginal as a master.

CAUTION: Do not store thespare keywith themotorcycle

as this will reduce all aspects ofsecurity.

IGNITION SWITCH/STEERING LOCK

This is a four position, key operated switch.The key can be removed from the switchonly when it is in the OFF, LOCK or P(PARK) position.

TO LOCK: Turn the key to the ‘OFF’position, push and fully release the key, thenrotate it to the ‘LOCK’ position.

‘PARKING’: Turn the key from the ‘LOCK’position to the ‘P’ position. The steeringremains locked.

NOTE:

S Do not leave the steering lock inthe ‘P’ position for long periods asthis will cause the battery todischarge.

RIGHT HANDLEBAR SWITCHES

Engine Stop Switch

In addition to the ignition switchbeing turned to the ‘ON’ position, the enginestopswitchmust be in the position for themotorcycle to operate.The engine stop switch is for emergencyuse. If an emergency arises which requiresthe engine to be stopped, move the enginestop switch to the position.

NOTE:S Although the engine stop switch

stops the engine, it does not turnoff all the electrical circuits.Ordinarily, the ignition switchshould be used to stop the engine.

CAUTION: Do not leave theignition switch in the ‘ON’

position unless the engine is runningas this may cause damage toelectrical components and thebattery.

Starter Button

The starter button operates theelectric starter. For the starter to operate,the clutch lever must be pulled to thehandlebar.NOTE:S Even if the clutch lever is pulled in,

the starter will not operate if theside stand is down and a gear isengaged.

LEFT HANDLEBAR SWITCHES

Headlight Dip Switch

High or low beam can be selectedwith the headlight dip switch. To select highbeam, push the switch forward. To selectlow beam, push the switch rearwards.

When the high beam is turned on, the highbeam warning light will illuminate.

Direction Indicator Switch

When the indicator switch is pushedto (left) or (right) and released, thecorresponding indicator flashes.

To turn off the indicators, push and releasethe switch.

Horn Button

When the horn button is pushed,with the ignition switch turned to the ‘ON’position, the horn will sound.

Pass Button

When the pass button is pressed,the headlightmainbeamwill be switchedon.It will remain on as long as the button is heldin and will turn off as soon as the button isreleased.

Hazard Warning Light Switch

When the hazard warning button ispushed in, both left and right indicators flashtogether. The hazard warning works whenthe ignition is in the ‘ON’ or ‘P’ (PARK)position only. To turn off the hazard warninglights, push and release the switch button.

FUEL REQUIREMENT

Your Triumph engine is designed to useunleaded fuel and will give optimumperformance if the correct grade of fuel isused. Always use unleaded fuel with anoctane rating of 95 RON.

CAUTION: The use of leadedpetrol is illegal in some

countries, states or territories.

REFUELLING

WARNING: To help reducehazards associated with fuel

handling, always observe thefollowing fuel safety instructions:

Petrol (fuel) is highly flammable andcan be explosive under certainconditions. When refuelling, turn theignition switch to the ‘OFF’ position.

Do not smoke.

Make sure the refuelling area is wellventilated and free fromanysourceofflame or sparks. This includes anyappliance with a pilot light.

Never fill the tank until the fuel levelrises into the filler neck.

After refuelling always check that thefuel filler cap is correctly closed andlocked.

Because petrol (fuel) is highlyflammable, any fuel leak or spillage,or any failure to observe the safetyadvice given above will lead to a firehazard which could cause damage toproperty, injury to persons or death.

FUEL TANK CAP

To open the fuel tank cap, lift up the key holecover. Insert the key into the lock and turnthe key clockwise.

To close and lock the cap, push the capdown into place with the key inserted, untilthe lock ‘clicks’ into place. Withdraw the keyand close the key cover.

CAUTION: Closing the capwithout the key inserted will

damage the cap, tank and lockmechanism.

Filling the Fuel Tank

Avoid filling the tank in rainy or dustyconditions where airborne material cancontaminate the fuel.

CAUTION: Contaminated fuelmay cause damage to fuel

system components.

Fill the fuel tank slowly to help preventspillage. Do not fill the tank to a level abovethe bottom of the filler neck. This will ensurethere is enough air space to allow for fuelexpansion if the fuel inside the tank expandsthrough absorption of heat from the engineor from direct sunlight.

After refuelling always check that the fuelfiller cap is correctly closed and locked.

WARNING: Overfilling thetank can lead to fuel spillage.

If petrol (fuel) is spilled, thoroughlywipe off the spilled fuel immediatelyand dispose of the cleaning clothsafely.

Take care not to spill any petrol (fuel)on the engine, exhaust pipes, tyres orany other part of the motorcycle.

Because petrol (fuel) is highlyflammable, any fuel leak or spillage,or any failure to observe the safetyadvice given above will lead to a firehazard which could cause damage toproperty, injury to persons or death.

Petrol (fuel) spilled near to or on thetyres will reduce the tyre’s ability togrip the road. This will give rise to adangerous riding condition causingloss of motorcycle control and anaccident.

STAND

Side Stand

The motorcycle is equipped with a sidestand on which the motorcycle can beparked.

NOTE:

S When using the side stand, alwaysturn the handlebars to the left.

S Whenever the side stand is used,make it a practice to ensure thatthe stand is fully up after firstsitting on the motorcycle.

Centre Stand (where fitted)

Toset themotorcycleupon the centrestand,step down firmly on the foot-finder part of thestand, and then lift the motorcycle up and tothe rear using the rear footrest hanger as ahandhold.

1. Electric Accessory Plug

ELECTRICAL ACCESSORY SOCKET

An electrical accessory socket is providedon the left hand side of the motorcycle.

The socket will provide a 12 volt electricitysupply. The socket is protected by a 10Amp. fuse therefore, items with a currentdraw greater than 10 Amps must not beplugged into the socket.

A plug, suitable for use with the accessorysocket, is available from your authorisedTriumph dealer.

1. Rear Seat Lock

SEATS

Rear Seat Lock

The rear seat lock is situated on the left handside of the motorcycle.

To remove the rear seat, insert the ignitionkey into the seat lock and turn the keyanti--clockwise while pressing down on therear part of the seat.

To detach the seat, lift the rear of the seatand slide it rearwards.

To refit, engage the seat retaining hooksbeneath the frame cross-member and pressdown on the rear of the seat to engage it inthe seat lock.

NOTE:

S An audible ‘click’ can be heardwhen the seat is correctlyengagedin the lock.

Finally, grasp the seat and check that it issecure in the seat lock and is correctlyretained by the front retaining hooks.

Front Seat Lock

The front seat lock is situated at the rear ofthe front seat. To remove the front seat,remove the rear seat to give access to thefront seat lock.

Pull on the lock ring-pull while pressingdown on the rear part of the seat.

To detach the seat, lift the rear of the seatand slide it rearwards.

To refit, engage the seat runners below theseat retaining brackets on either side of theframe, then press down on the rear of theseat to engage it in the seat lock.

NOTE:

S An audible ‘click’ can be heardwhen the seat is correctlyengagedin the lock.

CAUTION: To preventdetachment of the seat during

riding, after fitting always grasp theseat (or accessory cover) and pullfirmly upwards. If the seat/cover iscorrectly secured in the lock, it willnot detach from the rear frame.

Front Seat Height Adjustment

The height of the front seat can be adjustedto suit differing rider’s requirements. This isachieved by transferring the seat runnerlocation points to a different height location.

To adjust the seat height, remove the frontseat from the motorcycle as describedelsewhere in this section.

Invert the seat and press inwards on thefront of the seat runners to detach them fromthe four runner location pegs.

Select oneof the threealternative heights forthe seat and engage all location points at thesame height.

Refit the seat as described earlier in thissection.

S Using the appropriate key, unlockandopen thesecurity latch locatedonthe top of the pannier rail.

S Hold the handle of the pannier andgently ease the pannier towards therear of the motorcycle until it isreleased from the support rail.

S Close the security latch on the top ofthe pannier rail and remove the key.

To refit each pannier:

S Using the appropriate key, unlockandopen thesecurity latch locatedonthe top of the pannier rail.

S Position the pannier on the supportrail.

WARNING: Ensure that thesecurity latch is locked

correctly and the pannier is securelyheld in position. Failure to lock thesecurity latch correctlycould result inthe pannier becoming detached fromthe motorcycle. The resulting weightimbalance will seriously affect thehandling characteristics of themotorcycle leading to loss of controland an accident.

WARNING: The maximumsafe load for each pannier is

6Kg (13 lbs). Never exceed thisloading limit as this may cause themotorcycle to become unstableleading to loss of control and anaccident.

WARNING: In all cases, loadsmust be evenly distributed on

both sides of the motorcycle. Unevenloading may cause instability, loss ofcontrol and an accident.

WARNING: After fitting orremoving the luggage

system, operate the motorcycle in asafe area free from traffic to gainfamiliarity with the new handlingcharacteristics. Operation when notfamiliar with the new characteristicsof the motorcycle may result in anaccident causing injury or death.

WARNING: Never ride anaccessory equipped

motorcycle at speeds above 130 km/h(80 mph). The presence of accessories(including the pannier and racksystems), will cause changes in thestability and handling of themotorcycle. Failure to allow forchanges in motorcycle stability maylead to loss of control or an accident.Remember that the 130 km/h (80 mph)limit will be reduced by the fitting ofnon-approved accessories, incorrectloading,worn tyres, overallmotorcyclecondition and poor road or weatherconditions.

WARNING: This Triumphmotorcycle should be

operated within the legal speed limitsfor the particular road travelled.Operating a motorcycle at highspeeds can be potentially dangeroussince the time available to react togiven traffic situations is greatlyreduced as road speed increases.Always reduce speed inconsideration of weather and trafficconditions.

WARNING: Only operate thisTriumph motorcycle at high

speed in closed-course on-roadcompetition or on closed course racetracks. High speed operation shouldonly then be attempted by riders whohave been instructed in thetechniques necessary for high speedriding and are familiar with themotorcycle’s characteristics in allconditions.

HEATED HANDLEBAR GRIPS (not fittedin all markets)

1. Heated handlebar grips switch

The switch that operates the heatedhandlebar grips can be found on the lefthand cockpit infill panel.

The handle bar grips will only heat when theignition switch is in the ON position.

NOTE:

S To avoid draining the battery, onlyuse the heated handlebar gripswhen the engine is running.

Switch Operation

The system is designed to offer two heatinglevels, ’hot’ or ’warm’.

Press the switch down at the front for hotsetting.

Press the switch down at the rear for warmsetting.

For maximum benefit in cold conditions, setthe switch to the ’hot’ position initially andthen to ’warm’ when the grips have warmedup.

RUNNING IN

Running-in is the name given to the processthat occurs during the first hours of a newvehicle’s operation.

Inparticular, internal friction in the enginewillbe higher when components are new. Lateron, when continued operation of the enginehas ensured that the components have‘bedded in’, this internal friction will begreatly reduced.

A period of careful running in will ensurelower exhaust emissions, and will optimiseperformance, fuel economy and longevity ofthe engine and other motorcyclecomponents.

During the first 500miles (800 kilometres):--

S Do not use full throttle.

S Avoid high engine speeds at alltimes.

S Avoid riding at one constant enginespeed, whether fast or slow, for along period of time.

S Avoid aggressive starts, stops, andrapid accelerations, except in anemergency.

S Do not ride at speeds greater than3/4 of maximum speed.

From 500 to 1000 miles (800 to 1500kilometres):--

S Engine speed can gradually beincreased to the rev limit for shortperiods.

Both during and after running in has beencompleted:--

S Do not over--rev the engine whencold.

S Do not let the engine labour. Alwaysdownshift before the engine beginsto ‘struggle’.

S Do not ride with engine speedsunnecessarily high. Changing up agear helps reduce fuel consumption,reduces noise and helps to protectthe environment.

TO STOP THE ENGINE

S Close the throttle completely.

S Select neutral.

S Turn the ignition switch to the ‘off’position.

S Support the motorcycle on a firm,level surface with the side stand.

S Lock the steering.

CAUTION: The engineshouldnormally be stopped by

turning the ignition switch off. Theengine stop switch is for emergencyuse only.

Do not leave the ignition switched onwith the engine stopped. Electricaldamage may result.

TO START THE ENGINE

S Check that the engine stop switch isin the run position.

S Ensure that the transmission is inneutral.

S Pull the clutch lever fully in to thehandlebar.

S Turn the ignition switch on.

S Leaving the throttle completelyclosed, push the starter button untilthe engine starts.

NOTE:

S In very cold conditions, part openthe throttle to aid starting. Returnthrottle to theclosedpositiononcethe engine has started.

WARNING: Never start theengine or run the engine in a

confined area. Exhaust fumes arepoisonous and can rapidly cause lossof consciousness and death within ashort time.

Always operate your motorcycle inthe open--air or in an area withadequate ventilation.

CAUTION: Do not operate thestarter continuously for more

than 5 seconds as the starter motorwill overheat and battery power willdrop. Wait 15 seconds between eachoperation of the starter to allow forcooling and recovery of batterypower.

Do not let the engine idle for longperiods as this may lead tooverheating whichwill causedamageto the engine.

CAUTION: The low oilpressure warning light

should go out as soon as the enginestarts.

If the low oil pressure warning lightstays on after starting the engine,stop the engine immediately andinvestigate the cause.Running the engine with low oilpressure will cause severe enginedamage.

MOVING OFF

S Pull in the clutch lever and select firstgear. Open the throttle slightly and letout the clutch lever slowly. As theclutch starts to engage, open thethrottle a little more, allowing enoughengine speed to avoid stalling.

CHANGING GEARS

S Close the throttle while pulling in theclutch lever. Change into the nexthigher or lower gear. Open thethrottle part way, while releasing theclutch lever. Always use the clutchwhen changing gear.

1. Gear Change Pedal

WARNING: Takecare toavoidopening the throttle too far in

any of lower gears as this can lead tothe frontwheel lifting from theground(pulling a ‘wheelie’).

Always open the throttle cautiously,particularly if you are unfamiliar withthe motorcycle, as a ‘wheelie’ willcause loss of motorcycle control andan accident.

NOTE:

S Thegear changemechanism is the‘positive stop’ type. This meansthat, for each movement of thegear change pedal, you can onlyselect each gear, one after theother, in ascending or descendingorder.

WARNING: Do not change toa lower gear at speeds which

will cause excessive engine rpm(r/min). This can lock the rear wheelcausing loss of control and anaccident. Enginedamagemayalsobecaused. Changing down should bedone below 5000 rpm (r/min) for eachgear.

1. Front Brake Lever

BRAKING

WARNING: WHENBRAKING,OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING:

Close the throttle completely, leavingthe clutch engaged to allow theengine to help slow down themotorcycle.

Change down one gear at a time suchthat the transmission is in first gearwhen the motorcycle comes to acomplete stop.

When stopping, always apply bothbrakes at the same time. Normally thefront brake should be applied a littlemore than the rear.

Change down or fully disengage theclutch as necessary to keep theengine from stalling.

Never lock the brakes, as this maycause loss of control of themotorcycle and an accident.

1. Rear Brake Pedal

WARNING: For emergencybraking, disregard down

changing, and concentrate onapplying the front and rear brakes ashard as possible without skidding.Riders should practice emergencybraking in a traffic--free area.

Triumph strongly recommend that allriders take a course of instructionwhich includes advice on safe brakeoperation. Incorrect brake techniquecould result in loss of control and anaccident.

WARNING: For your safety,always exercise extreme

cautionwhenbraking, acceleratingorturning as any incautious action cancause lossof control and an accident.Independent use of the front or rearbrakes reduces overall brakingperformance. Extreme braking maycause either wheel to lock, reducingcontrolof themotorcycle andcausingan accident.

When possible, reduce speed orbrake before entering a turn asclosing the throttle or braking inmid--turn may cause wheel slipleading to loss of control and anaccident.

When riding in wet or rainyconditions, or on loose surfaces, theability to manoeuvre and stop will bereduced. All of your actions shouldbe smooth under these conditions.Sudden acceleration, braking orturningmaycause lossof control andan accident.

WARNING: Whendescending a long, steep

gradient use engine braking bydown--changing and use the brakesintermittently. Continuous brakeapplication can overheat the brakesand reduce their effectiveness.

Riding with your foot on the brakepedalor yourhandson thebrake levermay actuate the brake light, giving afalse indication to other drivers. Itmay also overheat the brake,reducing braking effectiveness.

Donotcoastwith the engineswitchedoff, and do not tow the motorcycle.The transmission is pressure--lubricated only when the engine isrunning. Inadequate lubrication maycause damage or seizure of thetransmission which can lead tosudden loss of motorcycle controland an accident.

PARKING

When parking the motorcycle, observe thefollowing:

Select neutral and turn the ignition switch tothe ‘OFF’ position. Lock the steering andremove the key to help prevent theft.

Always park on a firm, level surface toprevent the motorcycle from falling.

When parking on a hill, always park facinguphill to prevent the motorcycle from rollingoff the stand.

On a lateral (sideways) incline, always parksuch that the incline naturally pushes themotorcycle towards the sidestand.

Do not park on a lateral (sideways) incline ofgreater than 6_ and never park facingdownhill.

NOTE:

S When parking near traffic at night,leave the tail, licenceplate andsidelights on by turning the ignitionswitch to P (Park).

S Do not leave the switch in the ‘P’position for long periods as thiswill discharge the battery.

WARNING: Do not park on asoft or on a steeply inclined

surface as parking under theseconditionsmay cause themotorcycleto fall over. Ensure that the stand isfully retracted before riding off.

Petrol isextremely flammableandcanbe explosive under certainconditions. If parking inside agarageor other structure, be sure it is wellventilated and the motorcycle is notclose to any source of flame orsparks. This includes any appliancewith a pilot light.

The engine and exhaust system willbe hot after riding. DO NOT parkwhere pedestrians and children arelikely to touch the motorcycle astouching any of the hot parts maycause unprotected skin to becomeburnt.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR HIGH SPEED OPERATION

WARNING: This Triumphmotorcycle should be

operated within the legal speed limitsfor the particular road travelled.Operating a motorcycle at highspeeds can be potentially dangeroussince the time available to react togiven traffic situations is greatlyreduced as road speed increases.Always reduce speed inconsideration of weather and trafficconditions.

WARNING: Only operate thisTriumph motorcycle at high

speed in closed-course on-roadcompetition or on closed course racetracks. High speed operation shouldonly then be attempted by riders whohave been instructed in thetechniques necessary for high speedriding and are familiar with themotorcycle’s characteristics in allconditions.

High speed operation in any othercircumstances is dangerous and willlead to lossofmotorcycle control andan accident.

WARNING: The items listedare extremely important and

must never be neglected. A problemwhich may not be noticed at normaloperating speeds may be greatlyexaggerated at high speeds.

WARNING: The handlingcharacteristics of a

motorcycle at high speed may varyfrom those you are familiar with atlegal road speeds. Do not attempthighspeedoperationunlessyouhavereceived sufficient training and havethe required skills as a seriousaccident may result from incorrectoperation.

Steering

Check that the handlebar turns smoothlywithout excessive free play or tight spots.Ensure that the control cables do not restrictthe steering in any way.

Luggage:Make certain that any luggage containersare closed, locked and securely fitted to themotorcycle.

Brakes

Check that the front and rear brakes arefunctioning properly.

Tyres

High speed operation is hard on tyres, andgood tyres are crucial for riding safely.Examine their overall condition, inflate to thecorrect pressure (when the tyres are cold),and check the wheel balance. Securely fitthe valve caps after checking tyrepressures. Observe the information given inmaintenance and specification sections ontyre checking and tyre safety.

Fuel

Have sufficient fuel for the increased fuelconsumption that will result from high speedoperation.

Engine Oil

Make certain that the oil level is correct.Ensure that the correct grade and type of oilis used when topping--up.

Coolant

Check that the coolant level is at the upperlevel line in the expansion tank. (Alwayscheck the level with the engine cold).

Electrical Equipment

Make certain that the headlight, rear/brakelight, turn signals, horn etc., all workproperly.

MiscellaneousMake certain that all fixings are tight and thatall safety related parts are in good condition.

The addition of accessories and carriage ofadditional weight can affect themotorcycle’shandling characteristics causing changes instability and necessitating a reduction inspeed. The following information has beenprepared as a guide to the potential hazardsof adding accessories to a motorcycle andcarrying passengers and additional loads.

WARNING: Incorrect loadingmay result in an unsafe riding

condition leading to an accident.

Always ensure any loads carried areevenly distributed on both sides ofthe motorcycle. Ensure that the loadis correctly secured such that it willnot move around while themotorcycle is in motion.

Always check the load securityregularly (though not while themotorcycle is in motion) and ensurethat the load does not extend beyondthe rear of the motorcycle.

Never exceed the maximum vehicleloading weight of 207 Kg (455 lbs).

This maximum weight is made upfromthecombinedweightof the rider,passenger and any load carried.

WARNING: Do not installaccessories or carry luggage

that impairs the control of themotorcycle. Make sure that you havenot adversely affected any lightingcomponent, road clearance, bankingcapability (i.e. lean angle), controloperation, wheel travel, front forkmovement, visibility in any direction,or any other aspect of themotorcycle’s operation.

WARNING: Never ride anaccessory equipped

motorcycle at speeds above the legalsped limit or at a speed inappropriatefor the circumstances.

Speeds in excess of 130 km/h (80mph) should not be attempted on anaccessory equippedmotorcycle evenwhere the legal speed limit permitsthis.

The presence of accessories willcause changes in the stability andhandling of the motorcycle.

Failure to allow for changes inmotorcycle stability may lead to lossof control or an accident.

Remember that the 130km/h (80mph)absolute limit will be reduced by thefitting of non--approved accessories,incorrect loading, worn tyres, overallmotorcycle condition and poor roador weather conditions.

WARNING: Only operate thisTriumph motorcycle at high

WARNING: Your passengershould be thoroughly familiar

with motorcycle operation.

The passenger can cause loss ofcontrol of themotorcycle by incorrectpositioning during cornering andsudden movements.

It is important that the passenger sitsstill while the motorcycle is in motionand does not interfere with theoperation of the motorcycle.

If a passenger is carried, the ridershould instruct thepassenger tokeephis or her feet on the passengerfootrests and to firmly hold onto theseat strap or the rider’s waist or hips.

The passenger should also beadvised to lean with the rider whentravelling in corners and not to leanunless the rider does so.

Do not carry animals on yourmotorcycle.

WARNING: The handling andbraking capabilities of a

motorcycle will be affected by thepresence of a passenger. The ridermust make allowances for thesechanges when operating themotorcycle with a passenger andshould not attempt such operationunless trained to do so and withoutbecoming familiar and comfortablewith the changes in motorcycleoperating characteristics that thisbrings about.

Motorcycle operation withoutmakingallowances for the presence of apassenger could lead to loss ofmotorcycle control and an accident.

WARNING: Do not carry apassenger unless he or she is

tall enough to reach the footrestsprovided.

A passenger who is not tall enough toreach the footrests will be unable tosit securely on the motorcycle andmay cause instability leading to lossof control and an accident.

WARNING: Never attempt tostore any items between the

frame and the fairing. This canrestrict the steering and will causeloss of control leading to an accident.

Weight attached to the handlebar orfront forkwill increase themassof thesteering assembly and can result inloss of steering control leading to anaccident.

SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE

Tomaintain themotorcycle in a safe and reliable condition, themaintenance andadjustmentsoutlined in this section must be carried out as specified in the schedule of daily checks, andalso in line with the scheduled maintenance chart. not be neglected. Incorrectmaintenance or adjustment maycause one or more parts of themotorcycle to malfunction. Amalfunctioning motorcycle isdangerous and may lead to anaccident.

Weather, terrain and geographicallocation affects maintenance. Themaintenance schedule should beadjusted to match the particularenvironment in which the vehicle isused and the demands of theindividual owner.

Triumph Motorcycles cannot acceptany responsibility for damage orinjury resulting from incorrectmaintenance or improper adjustmentcarried out by the owner.

Since incorrect or neglectedmaintenance can lead to a dangerousriding condition, always have anauthorised Triumph dealer carry outthe scheduled maintenance of thismotorcycle.

SIDE PANEL

Side Panel Removal

• Remove both seats.

• Disconnect the battery, negative(black) lead first.

• Release the fuel tank in-fill panelfixings as shown in the diagramabove.

• On the right hand side, gently lift therear edge of the panel inorder toclearthe recess in the fuel tank.

• Slide the panel downand towards therear of the motorcycle to release theretaining clip situated at the front ofthe panel.

• On the left hand side, gently lift therear edge of the panel in order torelease the retaining bayonet fromthe frame.

• As with the right hand panel, slide thepanel down and towards the rear ofthe motorcycle to release theretaining clip situated at the front ofthe panel.

Side Panel Refitting

• Reverse the removal procedure withthe exception of the following.

• Reconnect the battery positive (red)lead first.

ENGINE OIL

In order for the engine, transmission, andclutch to function correctly, maintain theengine oil at the correct level, and changethe oil and oil filter in accordance withscheduled maintenance requirements.

WARNING: Motorcycleoperation with insufficient,

deteriorated, or contaminated engineoil will cause accelerated enginewearand may result in engine ortransmission seizure. Seizure of theengine or transmission may lead toloss of control and an accident.

Oil Level Inspection

• Stop engine, then wait for at least10 minutes to allow the oil to settle.

• Remove the filler plug/dipstick, wipethe dipstick clean and screw theplug/dipstick fully home in the clutchcover.

NOTE:

• The actual level is indicated whenthe motorcycle is level andupright, not on the side stand, andwhen the filler has been screwedfully home.

• Remove the filler plug/dipstick.

• The oil level is indicated by hashmarks on the filler plug/dipstick.When full, the indicated oil level mustlevel with the top of the hashed area.

• If the oil level is too low, add oil a littleat a time through the dipstick/fillerhole until the correct level is reached.

• Once the correct level is reached, fitand fully tighten the fillerplug/dipstick.

Oil and OilFilter Change

WARNING: Prolonged orrepeated contact with engine

oil can lead to skin dryness, irritationand dermatitis. In addition, usedengine oil contains potentiallyharmful contamination which cancause cancer. Wear suitable clothingand avoid skin contact.

The engine oil and filter must be replaced inaccordance with scheduled maintenancerequirements.

• Warm up the engine thoroughly, andthen stop the engine.

• Place an oil pan beneath the engine.

• Remove the engine drain plug.

WARNING: Theoilmaybehotto the touch. Contact with hot

oilmaycause theskin tobescaldedorburned.

• With the motorcycle on level ground,allow the oil to completely drain.

• Unscrew and remove the oil filterusing Triumph service toolT3880312. Discard the oil filter.

• Pre-fill the replacement oil filter withnew engine oil.

• Apply a smear of clean engine oil tothe sealing ring of the new oil filter. Fitthe oil filter and tighten to 8--12 Nm.

• After the oil has completely drainedout, fit a new sealing washer to theengine drain plug. Fit and tighten theplug to 25 Nm.

• Fill the engine with new oil of the typeand grade listed in the specificationsection. Do not overfill.

• Start the engine and allow to idle.

CAUTION: Racing the enginebefore theoil reaches all parts

of the engine can cause enginedamage or seizure. Only raise enginespeed after running the engine for afew seconds to allow the oil tocirculate fully.

• Ensure that the low oil pressurewarning light extinguishes shortlyafter starting.

CAUTION: If the engine oilpressure is too low, the lowoil

pressurewarning light will illuminate.If this light stays on when the engineis running, stop the engineimmediately and investigate thecause. Running the engine with lowoil pressure will cause enginedamage.

• Stop the engine and check the oillevel. Adjust if necessary.

Disposal of Used Engine Oil

To protect the environment, do not pour oilon the ground, down sewers or drains, orinto water courses. Dispose of used oilsensibly. If in doubt contact your localauthority.

CAUTION: Triumph highperformance fuel injected

engines are designed to use 10W/40or 15W/50 semi or fully syntheticmotorcycle engine oil which meetsspecification API SH (or higher) ANDJASO MA.

Do not add any chemical additives tothe engine oil. The engine oil alsolubricates the clutch and anyadditives could cause the clutch toslip.

Do not use mineral, vegetable,non--detergent oil, castor based oilsor any oil not conforming to therequired specification. The use ofthese oils may cause instant, severeengine damage.

Ensure no foreign matter enters thecrankcase during an oil change ortop--up.

COOLINGSYSTEM

To ensure efficientengine cooling,check the coolant level each day beforeriding themotorcycle, and top up the coolantif the level is low.

Corrosion Inhibitors

To protect the cooling system fromcorrosion, the use of corrosion inhibitorchemicals in the coolant is essential.

If coolant containing corrosion and rustinhibitor chemicals is not used, the coolingsystemwill accumulate rust and scale in thewater jacket and radiator. This will block thecoolant passages, and considerably reducethe efficiency of the cooling system.

WARNING: Use coolantmixture containing corrosion

inhibitors and anti--freeze suitable foraluminium engines and radiators.Always use the anti--freeze inaccordance with the instructions ofthe manufacturer.

Coolant mixture which contains anti--freeze and corrosion inhibitorscontains toxic chemicals which areharmful to the human body. Neverswallow anti--freeze or any of themotorcycle coolant.

Coolant LevelInspection

• Position the motorcycle on levelground and in an upright position.

• Turn the steering to full right lock.

• The coolant level in the expansiontank can be checked by lookingthrough the gap between the righthand fork and the instrument panel onthe right hand side of the motorcycle.

• Check the coolant level in theexpansion tank. The coolant levelmust be between the ‘MAX’ (upperline) and ‘MIN’ (lower line) marks. Ifthe coolant is below the minimumlevel, the coolant level must beadjusted.

Coolant LevelAdjustment

• Allow the engine to cool.

WARNING: Do not removethe expansion tank cap when

the engine is hot. When the engine ishot, the coolant inside the expansiontank is hot and also under pressure.Contact with this hot, pressurisedcoolant will cause scalds and skindamage.

• Remove the filler cover

• Add coolant mixture through the filleropening to the ‘MAX’ mark.

• Refit the filler cover.

NOTE

• If the coolant level is beingchecked because the coolant hasoverheated, also check the level inthe radiator (via the thermostathousing) and top--up if necessary.

• In an emergency, water alone canbe added to the cooling system.However, the coolant must bereturned to the correct mixtureratio as soon as possible.

Coolant Change

Have the coolant changed by an authorisedTriumph dealer in accordance withscheduled maintenance requirements.

Radiator Hoses

Check the radiator hoses for cracks ordeterioration, and hose clips for tightness inaccordance with scheduled maintenancerequirements. Have your authorisedTriumph dealer replace any defective items.

CAUTION: A year-round typeof antifreeze is installed in the

cooling system when the motorcycleleaves the factory. It is coloured blue,contains a 50% solution of ethyleneglycol, and has a freezing point of--35_C (--31_F).

Radiator and Cooling Fan

Check the radiator fins for obstructions byinsects, leaves or mud. Clean off anyobstructions with a stream of low--pressurewater.

WARNING: The cooling fanoperates automatically.

Always keep hands and clothingaway from the fan. Contact with therotating fan can cause injury.

CAUTION: Using highpressure water, such as from

a car wash facility, can damage theradiator fins and impair the radiator’sefficiency.

Do not obstruct or deflect airflowthrough the radiator by installingunauthorised accessories, either infront of the radiator or behind thecooling fan. Interference with theradiator airflow can causeoverheating, resulting in enginedamage.

CAUTION: Distilled watermust be used with the

antifreeze (see specification forantifreeze) in the cooling system.

If hard water is used in the system, itcauses scale accumulation in thewater passages, and considerablyreduces the efficiency of the coolingsystem.

If coolant must be added often, or theexpansion tank runs dry, there isprobably a leak in the system. Havethe cooling system inspected by yourauthorised Triumph dealer.

THROTTLE CONTROL

WARNING: The throttle gripcontrols the throttle valves in

the throttle bodies. If the throttlecable is incorrectly adjusted, eithertoo tight or too loose, the throttlemaybe difficult to control andperformance will be adverselyaffected.

Check the throttle grip free--play inaccordance with scheduledmaintenance requirements and makeadjustments as necessary.

Always be alert for changes in the‘feel’ of the throttle and have thethrottle system checked by anauthorised Triumph dealer if anychanges are detected. Changes canbe due to wear in the mechanismwhich could lead toa sticking throttle.

WARNING: Use of themotorcycle with an

incorrectly adjusted, incorrectlyrouted, sticking or damaged throttlecables will interfere with the throttlefunction resulting in loss ofmotorcycle control and an accident.

To avoid incorrect adjustment,incorrect routing, or continued useofastickingordamaged throttle, alwayshave your throttle checked andadjusted by your authorised Triumphdealer.

NOTE:

• Minor adjustments can be madeusing the adjuster near the twistgrip end of the throttle. Where acorrect setting cannot be achievedin this way, the adjuster at thethrottle body end must be used.

• Remove the seats.

• Disconnect the battery negative(black) lead first.

• Set the cable adjuster at the twist gripend such that it has an equal amountof adjustment in each direction.

• Release the locknut on the throttlebody adjuster.

• Set the adjuster at the throttle bodyend of the cable to give 2--3 mm ofplay at the twist grip. Tighten thelocknut.

• Make any minor adjustments asnecessary to give 2--3 mm of playusing the adjuster at the twist gripendof the cable. Tighten the locknut.

WARNING: Ensure that boththe adjuster locknuts are

tightened. A loose throttle cableadjuster could cause the throttle tostick leading to loss of control and anaccident.

• Reconnect the battery, positive (red)lead first.

• Refit the seats.

• Check that the throttle openssmoothly, without undue force andthat it closes without sticking.

• Ride carefully to your nearestauthorised Triumph dealer and havehim check the throttle systemthoroughly before riding again.

CLUTCH

The motorcycle is equipped with a cableoperated clutch.

If the clutch lever has excessive free--play,the clutch may not disengage fully whichwillcause difficulty in changing gear and maycause the engine to stall. Conversely, if theclutch lever has insufficient free--play theclutch may not engage fully, causing theclutch to slip which will reduce performanceand cause premature clutch wear.

Clutch lever free--play must be checked inaccordance with scheduled maintenancerequirements.

Inspection

• Check that there is 0.4--0.8 mmclutch lever free--play as shown in thediagram above.

• If there is an incorrect amount offree--play, adjustments must bemade.

• Loosen the knurled locknut at thelever end of the clutch cable and turnthe adjuster sleeve until the correctamount of clutch lever free--play isachieved.

• Tighten the knurled locknut againstthe clutch lever assembly.

• If correct adjustment cannot bemadeusing the lever adjuster, use thecableadjuster at the lower (clutch cover)end of the cable.

• Loosen the adjuster locknut.

• Turn the outer cable adjuster to give0.4--0.8 mm of free--play at the clutchlever.

DRIVE CHAIN

For safety and to prevent excessive wear,the drive chain must be checked, adjusted,and lubricated in accordance withscheduled maintenance requirements.Checking, adjustment and lubrication mustbe carried out more frequently for extremeconditions such as salty or heavily grittedroads.

If the chain is badly worn or incorrectlyadjusted (either too loose or too tight) thechain could jump off the sprockets or break.

WARNING: A loose or wornchain, or a chain that breaks

or jumps off the sprockets couldcatch on the engine sprocket or lockthe rear wheel

A chain that catches on the enginesprocket will injure the rider and leadto loss of motorcycle control and anaccident

Similarly, locking the rear wheel willlead to lossofmotorcycle control andan accident.

ChainLubrication

Lubrication is necessary every 500 milesand also after riding in wet weather, on wetroads, or any time that the chain appearsdry.

Use the special chain lubricant asrecommended in the specification section.

• Apply lubricant to the sides of therollers. This will allow the oil topenetrate to the chain rollers andbushings. Also apply oil to the chain‘O’ rings. Wipe off any excess oil.

• If the chain is especially dirty, cleanfirst using paraffin and then apply oilas mentioned above.

CAUTION: Do not use apower ‘jet’ wash to clean the

chain as this may cause damage tothe chain components.

Chain Free--movement Inspection

1. Maximum Movement Position(35--40 mm)

• Support the motorcycle on a firm,level surface with the side stand.

• Rotate the rear wheel to find theposition where the chain is tightest,and measure the vertical movementof the chain midway between thesprockets.

• The vertical movement of the drivechain must be 35--40 mm.

Chain Free--movement Adjustment

• If the chain free--movementmeasurement is incorrect, adjustmentsmust be made as follows:

• Loosen the wheel spindle nut.

• Release the locknuts on both the leftand right chain adjuster bolts.

• Moving both adjusters by an equalamount, turn the adjuster boltsclockwise to increase chainfree-movement and anti-clockwise toreduce chain free-movement.

Wear Inspection• Remove chain guard.

• Stretch the chain taut by hanging a10--20 kg (20--40 lb) weight on thechain.

• Measure the length of 20 links on thestraight part of the chain from pincentre of the 1st pin to pin centre ofthe 21st pin. Since the chain maywear unevenly, take measurementsat several places.

• If the length exceeds the service limitof 321mm, the chain must bereplaced.

• Rotate the rear wheel to inspect thedrive chain for damaged rollers, andloose pins and links.

BRAKES

Brake Wear Inspection

Brake pads must be inspected inaccordance with scheduled requirementsand replaced if worn to, or beyond theminimum service thickness.

If the lining thickness of any pad (front or rearbrakes) is less than 1.5mm (0.06 in), that is,if the pad has worn down to the bottomof thegrooves, replace all the pads on the wheel.

WARNING: Brake pads mustalwaysbe replaced as awheel

set. At the front, where two calipersare fitted on the same wheel, replaceall the brake pads in both calipers.

Replacing individual pads will reducebraking efficiency and may cause anaccident.

After replacement brake pads havebeen fitted, ride with extreme cautionuntil the new pads have ‘broken in’.

Disc Brake Fluid

Inspect the level of brake fluid in bothreservoirs and change the brake fluid inaccordance with scheduled maintenancerequirements. Use only DOT 4 fluid asrecommended in the specification section.The brake fluid must also be changed if itbecomes, or is suspected of having becomecontaminated with moisture or any othercontaminants.

WARNING: Brake fluid ishygroscopic which means it

will absorb moisture from the air.

Any absorbed moisture will greatlyreduce the boiling point of the brakefluid causing a reduction in brakingefficiency.

Becauseof this, always replacebrakefluid in accordance with scheduledmaintenance requirements.

Always use new brake fluid from asealed container and never use fluidfrom an unsealed container or fromone which has been previouslyopened.

Do not mix different brands or gradesof brake fluid.

Check for fluid leakage around brakefittings, seals and joints and alsocheck the brake hoses for splits,deterioration and damage.

Always rectify any faults beforeriding.

Failure toobserveand actupon anyofthese items may cause a dangerousriding condition leading to loss ofcontrol and an accident.

Brake Fluid Level Inspection andAdjustment

• The brake fluid level in the reservoirsmust be kept between the upper andlower level lines (reservoir heldhorizontal). To top-up the fluid,proceed as follows:--

• At the front, remove the reservoir coverby releasing the two securing screws.

• At the rear, remove the right handsidepanel to gain access to the reservoir.

• Fill the reservoirs to the upper levelline using new DOT 4 fluid from asealed container.

• Refit the reservoir caps ensuring thatthe diaphragm seals are correctlyfitted.

• At the rear, refit the right hand sidepanel.

WARNING: If there has beenan appreciable drop in the

level of the fluid in any fluid reservoir,consult your authorised Triumphdealer for advice before riding.

Ridingwith defectivebrakesmay leadto an accident.

Brake Pad Wear Compensation

Disc and disc pad wear is automaticallycompensated for and has no effect on thebrake lever or pedal action. There are noparts that require adjustment on the frontand rear brakes.

WARNING: If the brake leveror pedal feels soft when it is

applied, or if the lever/pedal travelbecomes excessive, there may be airin the brake lines or the brake may bedefective.

It is dangerous to operate themotorcycle under such conditionsand remedial action must be taken byyour authorised Triumph dealerbefore riding.

Brake Light SwitchesThe brake light is activated independentlyby either the front or rear brake. If the brakelight does not work when the front brakelever is pulled, or the rear brake pedaldepressed, ask your authorised Triumphdealer to investigate and rectify the fault.

WARNING: Riding themotorcycle with defective

brake lights is illegal and dangerous.

Anaccident causing injury to the riderand other road users may result fromuse of a motorcycle with defectivebrake lights.

STEERING/WHEEL BEARINGSSteering Inspection

Lubricate and inspect the condition of theheadstock (steering) bearings inaccordance with scheduled maintenancerequirements.

NOTE

• Always inspect thewheelbearingsat the same time as the steeringbearings.

WARNING: To prevent risk ofinjury from the motorcycle

falling during the inspection, ensurethat the motorcycle is stabilised andsecured on the support block.

Do not exert extreme force againsteach wheel or rock each wheelvigorously as this may cause themotorcycle to become unstable orcause injury by falling from itssupport.

Ensure that the position of thesupport block will not cause damageto the oil lines beneath the sump.

Inspecting the Steering for Free--Play

Inspection

• Position the motorcycle on levelground, in an upright position.

• Raise the front wheel off the groundand support the motorcycle.

• Hold the lower end of the front forksand try to move them forward andbackward.

• If any free--play can be detected, askyour authorised Triumph dealer toinspect and rectify any faults beforeriding.

WARNING: Riding themotorcycle with incorrectly

adjusted or defective steering maycause loss of motorcycle control andan accident.

• Remove the support and place themotorcycle on the side stand.

Wheel Bearings Inspection

If the wheel bearings in the front or rearwheel allow play in the wheel hub, are noisy,or if the wheel does not turn smoothly, haveyour authorised Triumph dealer inspect thewheel bearings.

The wheel bearings must be inspected atthe intervals specified in the scheduledmaintenance chart.

• Position the motorcycle on levelground, in an upright position.

• Raise the front wheel off the groundand support the motorcycle.

• Gently rock the top of the front wheelfrom side to side.

• If any free--play can be detected, askyour authorised Triumph dealer toinspect and rectify any faults beforeriding.

• Reposition the lifting device andrepeat for the rear wheel.

WARNING: Operation withworn or damaged wheel

bearings may cause impairedhandling and instability leading to anaccident. If in doubt, have themotorcycle inspected by anauthorised Triumph dealer beforeriding.

• Remove the support and place themotorcycle on the side stand.

FRONT SUSPENSION

There are no rider adjustments that can bemade to the front forks.

Front Fork Inspection

• Examine each fork stanchion for anysign of damage, scratching of theslider surface, or for oil leaks.

• If any damage or leakage is foundconsult an authorised Triumphdealer.

To check that the forks operate smoothly:

• Position the motorcycle on levelground.

• While holding the handlebars andapplying the front brake, pump theforks up and down several times.

NOTE:

• The suspension movement will beaffected by different adjustmentsettings.

• If roughness or excessivestiffness is detected, consult yourauthorised Triumph dealer.

Rear Rebound Damping Adjustment

The rear rebound damping adjuster islocated at the bottom of the rear suspensionunit on the right hand side of themotorcycle.

To adjust the rebound damping setting,rotate the adjuster clockwise to increaserebound damping and anti--clockwise todecrease.

NOTE

• The settings are all measured asthe number of adjuster turns outfrom the fully screwed in position.

• The motorcycle is delivered fromthe factory with the reboundadjuster set to 6 turns out from thefully screwed in position.

Wheel Marking

Tyre Wear

As the tyre treadwears down, thetyre becomes more susceptible topunctures and failure. It is estimated that90% of all tyre problems occur during thelast 10% of tread life (90% worn). It is,therefore, false economy and unsafe to usetyres until they are worn to their minimum.

• In accordance with the periodicmaintenance chart, measure thedepth of the treadwith a depth gauge,and replace any tyre that has worn tothe minimum allowable tread depth.

Tyre Replacement

All Triumph motorcycles are carefully andextensively tested in a range of ridingconditions to ensure that the most effectivetyre combinations are approved for use oneach model. It is essential that approvedtyres, fitted in approved combinations, areused when purchasing replacement tyres.The use of non approved tyres, or approvedtyres in non approved combinations, maylead to motorcycle instability and anaccident. See the specification section fordetails of approved tyre combinations.Always have tyres fitted and balanced byyour authorised Triumph dealer who has thenecessary training and skills to ensure safe,effective fitment.

WARNING: If a tyre sustainsa puncture, the tyre must be

replaced. Failure to replace apunctured tyre, or operation with arepaired tyre can lead to instability,loss of control or an accident.

WARNING: Do not installtube--type tyres on tubeless

rims. The bead will not seat and thetyres could slip on the rims, causingrapid tyre deflation that may result ina loss of vehicle control and anaccident. Never install an inner tubeinside a tubeless tyre. This will causefriction inside the tyre and theresulting head build--up may causethe tube to burst resulting in rapidtyre deflation, loss of vehicle controland an accident.

WARNING: If tyre damage issuspected, such as after

striking the kerb, ask yourauthorisedTriumph dealer to inspect the tyreboth internally and externally.Remember, tyre damage may notalways be visible from the outside.Operation of the motorcycle withdamaged tyres could lead to loss ofcontrol and an accident.

WARNING: Whenreplacement tyres are

required, consult your authorisedTriumph dealer who will arrange forthe tyres to be selected, in a correctcombination, from the approved listand fitted according to the tyremanufacturer’s instructions.

When tyres are replaced, allow timefor the tyres to seat to the rim(approximately 24hours). During thisseating period, ride cautiously as anincorrectly seated tyre could causeloss of control or an accident.

Initially, the new tyres will notproduce the same handlingcharacteristics as the worn tyres andthe rider must allow adequate ridingdistance (approximately 100 miles) tobecome accustomed to the newhandling characteristics.

BATTERY

WARNING: The battery givesoff explosive gases; keep

sparks, flames and cigarettes away.Provide adequate ventilation whencharging or using the battery in anenclosed space.

The battery contains sulphuric acid(electrolyte). Contact with skin oreyes may cause severe burns. Wearprotective clothing and a face shield.-- If electrolyte gets on your skin,flush with water immediately.

-- If electrolyte gets in your eyes,flush with water for at least 15minutes and SEEK MEDICALATTENTION IMMEDIATELY.

-- If electrolyte is swallowed, drinklarge quantities of water andSEEK MEDICAL ATTENTIONIMMEDIATELY.

KEEP ELECTROLYTE OUT OF THEREACH OF CHILDREN.

WARNING: The batterycontains harmful materials.

Always keep children away from thebatterywhether or not it is fitted in themotorcycle.

Do not jump start the battery, touchthe battery cables together or reversethe polarity of the cables as any ofthese actions may cause a sparkwhich would ignite battery gasescausing a risk of personal injury.

Battery Installation

• Reconnect the battery, positive (red)lead first.

• Apply a light coat of grease to theterminals to prevent corrosion.

WINDSCREENCLEANING

Always clean thewindscreen with cleanwater and a soft cloth. Dry after cleaningwith a soft, lint free cloth. Minor scratchescan be removed using a commercialpolishing compound suitable for plastic.

The windscreen must be replaced ifscratches cannot be completely removed.

WARNING: Never attempt toclean the windscreen while

the motorcycle is in motion asreleasing the handlebars may causeloss of vehicle control and anaccident.

Operation of the motorcycle with adamaged or scratched windscreenwill reduce the rider’s forward vision.Any such reduction in forward visionis dangerous and may lead to anaccident causing injury or death.

FUSES

Fuses are arranged in the fuse box locatedunder the seat.

If a fuse fails during operation, inspect theelectrical system to determine the cause,and then replace it with a new fuse of correctcurrent rating.

WARNING: Always replaceblown fuses with new ones of

the correct current rating (asspecified on the fuse box cover) andnever use a fuse of higher rating.

A blown fuse is indicated when all of thesystems protected by that fuse becomeinoperative. When checking for a blownfuse, use the table below to establish whichfuse has blown.

• Release the screws securing theheadlight unit to the support bracketand release the unit.

For the headlight bulb only:

• Disconnect the multi--pin electricalconnector from the headlight bulb tobe replaced and remove the rubbercover.

• Detach thewire bulb retainer from theclip (it is not necessary to undo thescrew) then remove the bulb from thelight unit.

For the position light bulb only:

• Without pulling on thewires, ease thebulb holder from the retaining socketin the rear of the light unit.

CLEANING

Frequent, regular cleaning is an essentialpart of the maintenance of your motorcycle.If regularly cleaned, the appearance will bepreserved for many years. Cleaning withwarm water containing an automotivecleaner is essential at all times butparticularly so after exposure to seabreezes, sea water, dusty or muddy roadsand in winter when roads are treated for iceand snow.

Although, under the terms of yourmotorcycle warranty, cover is providedagainst the corrosion of certain items, theowner is expected to observe thisreasonable advice which will safeguardagainst corrosion and enhance theappearance of the motorcycle. Do not usehousehold detergent as the use of suchproducts will lead to premature corrosion.

Preparation for Washing

Before washing, precautions must be takento keep water off the following places.

• Rear opening of the muffler: Coverwith a plastic bagsecuredwith rubberbands.

• Clutch and brake levers, switchhousings on the handlebar: Coverwith plastic bags.

• Ignition switch: Cover the keyholewith tape.

• Air cleaner intakes: Close up theintake with tape.

Where to be Careful

Avoid spraying water with any great forcenear the following places:

• Instruments.

• Brake cylinders and brake calipers.

• Under the fuel tank.

• Drive chain and headstock bearings.

NOTE:

• High pressure spray washers arenot recommended. The watermaybe forced into bearings and othercomponents causing eventualfailure from rust and corrosion.Some of the soaps which arehighly alkaline leave a residue orcause spotting.

After Washing

• Remove the plastic bags and tape,and clear the air intakes.

• Lubricate the pivots, bolts and nuts.

• Test the brakes before motorcycleoperation.

• Start the engine and run it for5 minutes. Ensure adequateventilation for the exhaust fumes.

• Use a dry cloth to absorb waterresidue. Do not allow water to standon the machine as this will lead tocorrosion.

WARNING: Never wax orlubricate the brake discs.

Loss of braking power and anaccident could result. Clean the discwith a proprietary brand of oil freebrake disc cleaner.

Unpainted Aluminium Items

• Items suchas brakeand clutch leversmust be correctly cleaned topreserve their appearance.

• Use a proprietary brand of aluminiumcleaner which does not containabrasive or caustic elements.

• Clean aluminium items regularly, inparticular after use in inclementweather, where the componentsmust be handwashed and dried eachtime the machine is used.

• Warranty claims due to inadequatemaintenance will not be allowed.

Cleaning of the Exhaust System:

All parts of the exhaust system of yourmotorcycle must be cleaned regularly toavoid a deterioration of its appearance.These instructions can be applied to blackchrome, brushed stainless steel and carbonfibre components alike.

NOTE:

• The exhaust system must be coolbefore washing to prevent waterspotting.

Washing

• Prepare a mixture of water and mildsoap. Do not use a high alkalinecontent soap as commonly found atcommercial car washes because itleaves a residue.

• Wash the exhaust system with a softcloth. Do not use an abrasivescouring pad or steel wool. They willdamage the finish.

• Rinse the exhaust systemthoroughly.

• Ensure no soap or water enters themuffler.

Drying

• Dry the exhaust system completelywith a soft cloth. Do not run theengine to dry the system or spottingwill occur.

Protecting

• When the exhaust system is dry, rub‘Motorex 645 Clean And Protect’ intothe surface.

CAUTION: Theuseofsiliconeproducts such as WD40 will

cause discolouration of the chromeand must not be used. Similarly, theuse of abrasive cleaners such asSolvol Autosol will damage thesystem and must not be used.

• It is recommended that regularprotectionbeapplied to the systemasthis will both protect and enhance thesystem’s appearance.

Preparation for Storage:

• Clean the entire vehicle thoroughly.

• Empty the fuel from the fuel tank intoa secure container.

WARNING: Petrol isextremely flammable and can

be explosive under certainconditions. Turn the ignition switchOFF. Do not smoke. Make sure thearea is well ventilated and free fromany source of flame or sparks; thisincludes any appliance with a pilotlight.

• Remove the spark plugs and putseveral drops (5 ml) of engine oil intoeachcylinder. Push the starter buttonfor a few seconds to coat the cylinderwalls with oil, and install the sparkplugs.

• Reduce tyre pressure by about 20%.

• Set the motorcycle on a box or standso that both wheels are raised off theground. (If this cannot be done, putboards under the front and rearwheels to keep dampness away fromthe tyre rubber).

• Spray oil on all unpainted metalsurfaces to prevent rusting. Preventoil fromgetting on rubber parts, brakediscs or in the brake calipers.

• Lubricate the drive chain and all thecontrol cables.

• Remove the battery, and store itwhere it will not be exposed to directsunlight, moisture, or freezingtemperatures. During storage itshould be given a slow charge (oneampere or less) about once a month.Keep the battery well charged during

cold weather so that the electrolytedoes not freeze andcrack thebattery.The more discharged the batterybecomes, the more easily it freezes.

• Tie plastic bags over the exhaust pipeto prevent moisture from entering.

• Put a cover over the motorcycle tokeep dust and dirt from collecting onit.

Preparation after Storage:

• Charge the battery if necessary, andinstall it in the motorcycle.

• Fill the fuel tank with fuel.

• Change the engine oil and filter.

• Check all the points listed in the DailySafety Checks section.

• Before starting the engine, removespark plugs.

• Put side stand down. This will isolatethe ignition and prevent stray sparksand damage to the ignition system.

• Crank the engine on the startermotorseveral times until the oil pressurelight goes out.

• Replace spark plugs and startengine.

• Check brakes and operation.
