From Karen’s Desk K.I.D.S. Inc. is getting more sophisticated in the technology department. In
addition to our Himama app, our use of tablets to document children's learning
and more, we now have an updated website. Visit www.kidsincorporated.ca and

Speaking of our Himama app… As we all learn this HiMama program together, please feel free to forward any questions or comments to the supervisors at either the Montrose or South Pointe location. One question that has come up a few times is “why do I get a note sent during the day and then get an email with the same information at the end of the day in a report”- the answer to this is that educators send some notes in the moment which is what families get as it is sent; the report that sends at the end of the day is done automatically from the app once the centre closes which includes anything sent during the day or items that have been created but not directly sent. Another question is “why are some reports blank”- well this happens when an educator signs a child into the app in order to create something to send home, gets busy and does not get back to complete the report thus it gets sent automatically at the end of the day. Another question is “Can I write messages/send photo to my child or reply on notes sent?” the answer is “yes”- we will try to show children messages from the family as soon as we can-(if it is an important message or photo, we may need to be sent an email to tell us to check the app)

Montrose site Preschool News:
What a mixed up month we had weather wise! One day we were enjoying running around in t-shirts, and the next day we were digging out the winter gear! Children love nature, and adapted well to the seasonal changes. Thank you to all the Tropical Jungle families that have participated in our “Ish” take-home bag. The children have been very excited to receive this bag and have created many lovely “Ish” pictures. The Enchanted Forest morning group children have been enjoying a “colourful” month with lots of art projects and science activities presented to the group. Take a look on page 5 for a description of Cassandra’s activity. Some of the children have started to show an interest in preparing our gardens for the growing season. Hoping for sunshine and gentle rains! We are looking or donations of watering cans and bug catchers. Jean Chorney
Montrose School Age News! The educators at K.I.D.S. Inc. Montrose are busy planning for summer. One of the projects
for the summer will start in June. With Canada having its 150th birthday this year we will have
many 150 challenges. The first challenge will be to see if as a community, we can track enough
kilometres to walk across Canada. This virtual adventure will begin on the 1st of June. To
participate you simply send an email to our official Canada 150 Gmail account and say your
family would like to take part – [email protected]. After that, once a week send in your
total kilometers to the web site and we will track them on the map in the gym. We will also
track all the kilometers we walk in our summer program.
Now remember that it is the total for your family, even the fur babies. If Dad walks 2 kilome-
ters, that would be 2 km for the week, but if Dad and big brother each walk 2 km that would be
4 for the family, but if they also walked the dog it would now be 6 km for the family. If grandma
came along…well you get the picture.
If just the children and educators did this project we would each have to walk 204 km over
the summer months to cover the distance but with the help of all the families I believe we can
do this in three months.
So, email [email protected] and make a commitment to report your distances each week.
Remember you can do this even on your holidays – the distance counts no matter where you
are.

South Pointe Preschool News:
Mother Nature may have us questioning if it’s Spring, but preschool is preparing for the nicer weather! In being hopeful, you can help your child to be sun-safe by supplying a labeled hat, and/or sunglasses.
Please take the time to check your child’s extra clothing levels; we do require 1 full set of extra clothing per child to be kept in their K.I.D.S. Inc. locker. A full set would include: a shirt, pants, underwear, and socks.
If your child is toilet training, please consider sending multiple pairs of underwear, pants, and socks.
Room updates:
The Spruce Room children have been focusing on taking care of the Earth through acts of kindness like a community garbage pickup. The even made their own Earth Day promises which have been displayed in the hallway outside of their room.
The Pine Room children have been exploring the concept of cause and effect. The group enjoyed learning about this first hand, by participating in the creation of a baking soda, and vinegar volcano science experiment.
The Cedar Room children have been exploring signs of Spring, and have their own little indoor bean garden so the children can see first-hand the plant life cycle. They group is also continuing with their long-term “Fill a Bucket” kindness project, which showcase acts of kindness within the group. You can see the acts of kindness, by looking for the wall with all the paper hearts.

South Pointe News: Since we are in a change of seasons, the children can now carry their outdoor shoes in to their
room upon arrival ,where their locker is located and switch their indoor shoes in the bottom square
of their individual locker for their outdoor shoes each day. We will continue to do this from late
spring into early fall when the weather shifts back to “boot and snow season.”
If we go outside and the children’s outdoor shoes are quite wet, muddy or dirty , we may need to put
them in the hallway for these occasions. Remember… label, label, label.
Thank you in advance for helping to keep our centre, clean and organized.
A huge thank you to all of the amazing families for all of the appreciation towards the South Pointe
educators over the week of the ECE. We all feel so very appreciated and are proud to a part of this
community. We are thrilled to have formed meaningful connections to the families in our program in
such a short period of time.
Thank you to :
The Ramcharita family for the pirate ship playhouse and pop up tents
The Sinclair family for the slide and climber
Newton family for the tires
Busby family for the play house and sandbox

South Pointe School Age News:
The Cottonwood children have expressed interest in writing and putting on a puppet play. They are
currently in the planning phase. It’s wonderful hearing the excitement in the children’s voices as they com-
municate with each other and figure out the details to make this happen. They have wonderful ideas, huge
plans and we can’t wait to see what unfolds.
The Tamarack children have shown care and concern over the younger preschool and infant programs.
Many of these children have younger siblings in the preschool programs. It started off with them wanting
to see where their siblings are, and then wanting to help within the preschool and infant rooms. This group
of children have been working hard on making decorations for the infant program, wanting to deliver mes-
sages to the educators and are now painting pictures for each of the preschool and infant rooms. The chil-
dren have consulted with the educators in the programs on colours they would in the portrait and are now
using that information to create masterpieces for these programs.
A proud moment to share: One of the preschool rooms asked if their siblings could come for a visit. When
these children were told their siblings wanted a quick hello they stopped what they were doing, some were
even eating snack, and proudly walked to the preschool room. Within the preschool room, some of the chil-
dren were eating a treat brought in by one of the preschool children for their birthday. The school age chil-
dren were told that these treats were for the preschoolers and there wasn’t enough for them to share. They
accepted the answer and even volunteered to help the preschool staff clean up before they returned. It truly
is amazing what children can do when shown and encouraged to be kind and compassionate.
Montrose and South
Pointe locations are
closed Friday May 26th to attend
the Manitoba Child Care
Association conference.
The Science of Colour
When children are involved with an activity, they gain insight and
are more involved in the experience. They learn to love to learn!
Recently I have noticed the children’s interest in colour and wanting
to mix colours. It all started with watching Leah M. and Shea mixing
paint on paper at the art easel. The two girls were discussing the col-
ours they were mixing. I decided to do a colour mixing experiment with
the primary colours to show the children how colours are mixed togeth-
er to form something new.
To do the experiment the children poured water and food colouring
into baby food jars, we then put an empty baby food jar in the middle of the 2 colours. We
rolled up paper towels to watch the colours travel up the paper towel and mix together in
the middle jar.
During this experiment the children also made predictions as to what colour we would get
by mixing the two colours.
Ari said, “I’ve learned about primary colours at school. Yellow and red will make orange.”
As we watched and checked on the experiment for the next few days, we began to observe
the colours mixing up the paper towels and into the middle baby food jar.
I believe this was an experiment the children enjoyed because they were involved with it
from the beginning to the end with the pouring of the water and food colouring, making pre-
dictions and observations.
