Diseases related to cigarette smoking
• Heart disease
• Emphysema
• Lung and throat cancer
• Bronchitis• Asthma
• Chemicals in cigarette smoke can cause high blood pressure, stroke (bursting of an artery) and heart attack (blocking blood supply to the heart)
CIKGU WANI
Diseases related to cigarette smoking
• Heart disease
• Emphysema
• Lung and throat cancer
• Bronchitis• Asthma
• Cigarette smoke damages the air sacs in the lungs
• The air sacs lose their elasticity and are unable to expand and contract
• The patient has difficulty in breathing

Diseases related to cigarette smoking
• Heart disease
• Emphysema
• Lung and throat cancer
• Bronchitis• Asthma
• Heavy smokers run the risk of getting lung or throat cancer
CIKGU WANI
Diseases related to cigarette smoking
• Heart disease
• Emphysema
• Lung and throat cancer
• Bronchitis• Asthma
• The bronchi of the lungs become red and inflamed
• The patient coughs up excessive phlegm
• The patient suffers from chest pain

Diseases related to cigarette smoking
• Heart disease
• Emphysema
• Lung and throat cancer
• Bronchitis• Asthma
• Asthma patients become worse with smoking

Harmful substances in cigarette smoke
• Nicotine • Tar • Carcinogens• Carbon mon
oxide • Irritants
• Let’s find out!!! Click the substance…
CIKGU WANI
Harmful substances in cigarette smoke
• Nicotine • Tar • Carcinogens• Carbon mon
oxide • Irritants
• It is addictive • It stimulates the nervous system
and damages brain tissues• It harden blood vessels and
increases blood pressure
CIKGU WANI
Harmful substances in cigarette smoke
• Nicotine • Tar • Carcinogens• Carbon mon
oxide • Irritants
• It is a black acidic liquid which corrodes and damages the lungs
• It contains 17 chemicals which cause cancer in animals
CIKGU WANI
Harmful substances in cigarette smoke
• Nicotine • Tar • Carcinogens• Carbon mon
oxide • Irritants
• Cigarette smoke contains chemicals which can cause cancer of the lungs and throat
CIKGU WANI
Harmful substances in cigarette smoke
• Nicotine • Tar • Carcinogens• Carbon
monoxide • Irritants
• It is a poisonous gas which is found in cigarette smoke
• It combines readily with haemoglobin, depriving the body of oxygen
CIKGU WANI
Harmful substances in cigarette smoke
• Nicotine • Tar • Carcinogens• Carbon mon
oxide • Irritants
• Cigarette smoke contains irritants such as ammonia which irritate the respiratory passage as well as the air sacs in the lungs

Life without clean air
Life without clean air
Acid raine.g. metal objects are corroded and pH of soil and water sources is lowered.
Deformities e.g. radioactive waste causes deformities in unborn babies
Blurred vision e.g. dust or smoke in the air blurs vision.
A reduction in agricultural productione.g. dust sticks to leaves and slow down the photosynthesis process.
The green house effecte.g. man will live in a warmer environment
Health problems e.g. lead causes blood poisoning and brain damage; smoke in the air can cause lung infections such as bronchitis.

Ways to keep the air clean
• Use unleaded fuels. • Use public transport when available. Carpool
when necessary. Use bicycles instead of motor vehicles. Walk to nearby destinations whenever possible.
• Avoid open burning. Burn plastic waste in closed incinerators.
• Plant trees in your surroundings.
CIKGU WANI
Ways to keep the air clean
• Buy and use products in their non-aerosol form. Propellants used in aerosol can contribute to pollution.
• Select products with less packaging. Packaging consumes energy when it is made, generates harmful volatile organic compounds when it is printed and produces CO2 and CO when it is burned. When thrown away it goes to landfills, which generate greenhouse gases.
CIKGU WANI
Ways to keep the air clean
• Reduce, reuse and recycle items whenever possible. Buy and use recycled products.
• Look for durability in products you buy and use, not just lower prices.
• Ensure factories follow the environmental laws.
• Use ozone-friendly gases for air conditioners and aerosol sprays.
CIKGU WANI
Habits to maintain clean air
• Do not smoke • Do not carry out open burning• Save energy such as gas and electricity• Walk or cycle instead of travelling by car• Go to work in a car pool• Use public transport such as buses and LRT• Keep your home well-ventilated
CIKGU WANI
Test yourself!!!• What is the sources of air pollution caused by
carbon monoxide?
• State the gas that causesa) Acid rain b) The greenhouse effectc) Thinning of the ozone layer.
• What is the effect of lead on health.
CIKGU WANI
Test yourself!!!• State two steps that can be taken to prevent
factory smoke from polluting the air.
• State two negative effects of the depletion of the ozone layer.
CIKGU WANI
Test yourself!!!• State three air pollutants that are released by
motor vehicles.
• Give three ways to overcome this problem. • State the best ways to reduce carbon dioxide
in the air. Give a reason for your answer.
