Providing data that will help beekeepers and healthcare

organisation by identifying apiaries, potential seasonal

bee flora territories and risk zones (pesticides, natural

hazards…)

The goal ?

METHODOLOGY

GIS system applied to modern apiary industry

® Fabrice LARTIGOU / 2D3D.GIS – APIMONDIA 2009

STEP 1. Locating apiaries with GPS

We use a Global Positioning System (GPS) connected to a mobile GIS

software to locate apiaries and store informations about hives and

bee colonies (health, species, apiaries production,...)

We map bee forages territories after having define a

maximum bee flying distance around each hive

STEP 1. Locating apiaries by GPS

At this step and to validate

the survey we work

closely with

Beekeepers

Expert in beekeeping

GIS system make possible to map Land use, hive density

by grid surface (sq km), and bee foraging pressure

(concentric circles out from hives to the maximum bee

flying distance)

STEP 2. Identify vegetation strata

Using remote sensing aerial photography and satellite

imagery is more rewarding to highlight the different

types of vegetation, substrate over large areas, issues of

plant health, etc

At this step and to validate the

survey we work closely with

Remote sensing experts

Expert in environment

 Local botanists

STEP 2. Identify interesting bee flora territories

Bee Flora species scattered in each botanical strata. Description

(botanical strata, scientific name (Latin) and local denomination,

origin, localization, period of bloom, altitude, sun exposition, climate,

height, diameter and density of the plant canopy, etc).

Information from beekeepers and botanist allow us to

define a typology of interesting bee flora zones from

the general vegetation and botanical map

STEP 3 : Identify risk zones

Beekeepers needs to identify several types of risks :

Natural risks (flooding, erosion,

land hazards…)

 Industrial risks (pesticides…)

Heath possible deseases

GIS help to group, organise and simulate different

database from risk zones.

GIS help to identify industrial and agricultural risk

(pesticides treatment,…).

FINALLY…

GIS system will combine all theses data and assist the

modern beekeeping industry to define :

Territories which are not actually foraged

Territories within hight bee forage pressure

Territories to avoid due to intoxication

hazards (flooding, pesticides…)

FINALLY…

GIS system help to inform authorities about any land

management project which may cause damages to the

beekeeping industry (urbanism, forest management,

industrial zones…)

FINALLY…

GIS help to inform animal healthcare organisnation to

the localisation of bee colonies when a campaign of

moscito treatment is planned, …
