In the beginning…….

2009 ePortfolio Trials

Initiated in response to teacher requests for:• electronic method of collecting workplace evidence for assessment • new technologies to aid in increasing learner engagement

Aimed to:• test suitability of four ePortfolio systems

• identify how ePortfolios could assist in the improvement of delivery & assessment (including recognition)

Great things we experienced…….

Learner’s Perspective

Increased skills in:• digital literacy in a professional context• storage & organisation of digital artefacts • editing & uploading of images & files

Development of:• personal professional profiles assist ongoing work & study roles• employability skills• written language skills appropriate for job-seeking & the workplace

Creation of a:• “place” & sense of belonging for disengaged learners• portable, lifelong & life-wide canvas of an individuals learning

Teacher’s Perspective

Increased skills in :• the use of a variety of technologies & various programs • editing & uploading images & files for the web• providing feedback to learners in an online environment

Development of:• greater awareness & a shared understanding of how to engage

learners & deliver programs using learner driven technologies• skills required for appropriate learning design & content creation in

an online environment

Challenges we encountered…….

Relatively low uptake by teachers despite access to:• a range of systems • provision of training • availability of ongoing support

Time taken:• to familiarise learners & teachers with the technology

Technical Issues:• with wireless networking & DET network access

Difficulties:• gaining access to adequate equipment & facilities• for teachers in embedding a learner driven, learner controlled

environment into existing delivery practices

Emerging clarity & the path that lay ahead…….

Clearly:

The use of ePortfolios requires a paradigm shift for teachers, one that offers a new, yet very unfamiliar way of engaging learners.

Our Next Step:

Build on experiences from the initial trial by taking a more focused approach; introducing ePortfolios where they are more likely to succeed.
