Impermanence Springs Eternal BY REV. HARRY GYOKYO BRIDGE

SPRING OHIGAN REMINDS US THAT

another year has passed, another

winter has ended, and another

opportunity has come for us to listen

to the Dharma and try and put the

teachings into practice. One of these

teachings is “impermanence” – not

only does nothing last forever, but ev-

erything is constantly changing. This is

illustrated in the following poem:

“The fl owing water never stops ,

and yet the water never stays

the same.”

These are the famous opening lines

from the “Hojoki,” by Kamo no Chomei,

who lived from 1155-1216 in medieval

Japan (the translation is by Yasuhiko

Moriguchi and David Jenkins). This is a

powerful image, a wonderful illustration

of impermanence in action. We nor-

mally think of a river as a self-contained

object, whether we are looking at it on

a map or driving over it in a car or actu-

ally sitting on its banks. Every time we

look, it appears to be the same river.

And yet, the water that comprises this

river is not the same, it is constantly

moving, constantly being replenished.

I should point out that the rest of

the poem has a bit of a melancholy, if

not pessimistic, cast:

“Foam fl oats upon the pools,

scattering, reforming,

never lingering long.

So it is with man

and all his dwelling places

here on earth.”

This is certainly one aspect of

impermanence. In Japan this is often

illustrated with the image of the cherry

IN ACKNOWLEDGING ALL THE

volunteers, groups and organizations

for December’s Mochitsuki, I neglect-

ed to mention Koda Farms for donat-

ing the Sho-Chiku-Bai rice for us to

pound and mold. My apologies for

this oversight, and THANK YOU to the

Koda Family for your generous dona-

tion!

It was one of my 2015 goals to

attend BCO Youth Club Basketball

games. So far, I’ve been able to attend

four games, watching three of our

fi ve teams play. I plan to see the other

teams over the next two weekends.

I’ve played, coached, refereed, and

coordinated youth basketball leagues

while in High School and College, and

always enjoy watching the kids play in

a fun, low-competitive environment.

Jr. YBA News BY KELSEY HIROTA

AFTER SUCH A COLD AND RAINY

winter, it’s fi nally starting to get

warm again! I hope everyone is hav-

ing a great 2016 so far, and that

you’re sticking to your New Year’s

Resolutions still (I haven’t been). Last

month, there were not a lot of Jr. YBA

events, besides our Winter activity,

after many changes of plans, it was

decided that the day would consist

of shopping and dinner at the mall.

Thank you to everyone who put in the

effort to plan and execute!

This month, on February 6, mem-

bers of the Bay District Jr. YBA got

up at 5AM, bussed up to Soda Springs

(think Tahoe), and came back within

the day. The annual Bay District Ski

Trip went underway, and many Oak-

land members got to attend. Thank

you so much to the trip advisors, Car-

rie Oto and Mika Arbelbide. Also,

thank you to the parents who drove

their kids down to the church at such

an early arrival time!

There was an Udon Fundraiser

on February 14th. We hope you all

enjoyed the udon and that you had

a great Valentine’s Day! Thank you

to Mika Taga-Anderson and Andrew

Brown and their families for organiz-

ing and chairing the event! We also

want to thank all the parents who

helped prep and serve the udon with

us. We appreciate it! I could not have

been done without your help!

In the coming months, there are

some big events to look out for. This

includes the Bay District Confer-

ence in mid-March, and Hanamatsuri

in early-April. Stay tuned for more

details later! As for this month, I think

that’s all for now. Thanks for reading

and come back for more next time!

BCO Happi Coats

WE WILL BE PLACING

another order for the church’s

new Happi coat. If you haven’t

ordered yours yet, see Mary

Hiromoto at the church

offi ce and fi ll out the form

by April 10th. Sizes are S, M,

L, XL. There is also a coordi-

nating gadget bag available.

Happi coat is $55 (gener-

ously subsidized by the Ma-

suyama Fund). Gadget bag

is $15.

If you ordered for the

December delivery, your

Happi coat can be picked up

from the offi ce now.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH, AFTER

our usual mini service conducted by

Rev. Harry Bridge followed by a short

meeting with Jean Nakazono at

the helm, and yoga exercises led by

Ms. Patti Hirota, we enjoyed our an-

nual New Year’s lunch with everyone’s

assistance. We continued watching our

ongoing movie, “99 Years of Love”.

“No”, we were not fi nished with the

movie yet. You know, as one ages every-

thing we do takes time, unlike when we

were younger.

Already, we are entering the month

of February and hopefully we can come

up with some interesting activities for

the year at our next gathering.

New members are welcome to join

us. Besides our yoga exercises, we have

Renie Grohl who is more than happy

to assist anyone interested in knitting.

She is a great knitter herself. Also, with

additional members we may be able to

start up another new activity. Please

come and join us for a day of fun.

Momiji Kai News BY NANCY YAMAMOTO

HŌ-ON Service Team 2 BY LINDA MINAMOTO

THE BEST WAS SAVED FOR LAST!

Host group 2 was responsible for

January’s tasks. It was our fi rst turn

since this initiative started with Host

group 3 in January 2015. Although,

this initiative is not a competition, I

have to say that our Host group along

with the children and friends of Host

group 2 are the BEST!

At the beginning, I did have some

hand wringing because I thought the

January tasks were going to be so

challenging, especially the Ho-onko

otoki. Because Ho-onko is the most

important service of the year, I was

advised that the otoki menu should

be Japanese vegetarian, if possible.

Well, I am not a cook and the mem-

bers in my group were not especially

experienced in preparing a Japanese

vegetarian otoki for a large group. I

needn’t have worried. Kathy Terusaki,

an excellent cook, came to my res-

cue and helped my group make the

main rice dish. The other members

of my group very competently pre-

pared the tofu salad and string beans

which we served along with the rice.

Besides my Host group members,

Karen Hashimoto, Ruby Kuritsubo, my

sister, Teresa, my daughter, Mariko,

and Ellen Takayama’s son, Greg

helped with the preparations. I was

especially impressed with Greg and

Mariko’s kitchen skills. (Greg boiled

the string beans which were cooked

to perfection.) The only mishap was

undercooked rice because one of the

rice cookers was not working prop-

erly. All in all, the otoki was a success

and my group had fun preparing it.

Members of my team were very

willing to volunteer to perform our

tasks and all of the tasks were com-

pleted with plenty of manpower. My

group had lots of help from Friends

of Host Group 2: Karen Hashimoto,

Ruby Kuritsubo and my sister, Te-

resa helped clean the hondo; Robert

Noguchi, Agnes and Digger Sasaki

helped collate the Busshin; and, June

Masuyama was a greeter one Sunday.

It was especially gratifying to have

some of our adult children help. In

addition to Greg and Mariko, Nicole

and Kevin Nakaso (Lynn and Peter’s

children) helped with January 2nd’s

morning and Shotsuki refreshments.

I want to thank everyone in my

Host group and the Friends and Chil-

dren of Host Group 2 for all their hard

work during the month of January.

Again, you are the BEST!

MARCH 20163

MARCH 20164

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

My name is Kelly Lim and I will be

heading the Youth Club board for the

remainder of the 2015-2016 season.

I wanted to send a huge thank you to

Scott Morgan for his years of dedication

and hard work as Youth Club President.

We owe him a great deal of gratitude for

handling so many great things!

Here’s a short introduction about

myself. My parents, Eddie & Terry Yo-

koyama, have been church members for

years. My sister, Robyn Yokoyama, & I

were a part of the BCO Youth Club and

Jr. YBA as kids. We played for the Rams

starting at the D level and fi nished at the

B level. So many great memories! I am

married to my husband, Jason Lim, and

we have an 8-year old daughter, Kira.

We were brought back into the Youth

Club when Kira started playing basket-

ball when she was 6. My Dad, Jason,

Robyn and I coached the E bronze team

starting that year and we are still coach-

ing now.

When I’m not coaching, you can fi nd

me at my new job as a Senior Accoun-

tant at a 3D printing company in Oak-

land. I also enjoy running and boxing.

You can also probably fi nd me watching

and rooting for the Golden State War-

riors. Go Dubs!

I am very excited to team with a

great group of people to help the Youth

Club grow. We have an exciting remain-

der of the season ahead of us. I re-

ally believe that playing basketball and

being a part of this community played

a big part of who I am today. I hope to

pass that on to others!

Youth Club note: the Youth

Club now has a facebook page:

www.facebook.com/BCOYouthClub

We’re hoping to use it to an-

nounce dates like registration, upcom-

ing events and hopefully photos of our

players and games.

IF YOU HAVE ATTENDED DHARMA

Chat recently, you have experienced

a preview of the focus of our upcom-

ing Monthly Dharma Study Class on

Saturday, March 26th from 2-4 p.m.

Please join us as Reverend Bridge

helps us deepen our understanding

of Shinran Shonin’s Shoshinge, both

the meaning of it and how to chant

it. We will continue to learn about

Shoshinge leading up to our Gotan-E

Service (Shinran Shonin Day) in May,

one of the most important obser-

vances in our Jodo Shinshu tradition.

We also will have our monthly

Evening Dharma Service and Dis-

cussion led by Reverend Bridge on

Wednesday, March 9th from 7-8:30

p.m. Free and open to the public, this

is a low-key, non-intimidating way to

learn about Buddhism for newcomers

as well as life-long temple members.

Our next major service will be

Spring Ohigan on Sunday, March

20th beginning at 10 a.m. Observed

during the Spring Equinox at a time

when harmony pervades through-

out the universe, we gather before

Amida Buddha in appreciation of the

Nembutsu teachings which help us

to realize harmony in our inner lives.

Our Buddhist Education Committee

will meet in the mini-chapel during

refreshments following the Ohigan

Adult Service. Please join us if you are

interested in the Buddhist education

opportunities we offer at BCO – we

welcome your input for future pro-

grams and activities!

Many thanks to the coaches, parents,

volunteers and players for another

great season. If you know someone

interested in playing, please contact

the Church offi ce. The 2016 teams will

be formulated later this summer.

At press time, the BCO An-

nual General Meeting was held on

February 7th. I will provide a short

summary of what occurred in the next

issue of the Busshin.

Dharma School News BY MAYA LAWRENCE

WE WELCOMED TWO STUDENTS

to the High School class. Welcome

to Andrew Brown and Takeo Taga.

Andrew is the son of Carrie Oto and

the grandson of Edith Oto. Takeo

is the son of Linda Taga and the

brother of Mika Taga.

We honored Shinran Shonin at

Ho-Onko by bringing him flowers

and leis. Have you noticed the Shin-

ran Shonin statue at the top of the

stairs is decorated with paper flow-

ers? We’ll decorate him again in May

for his birthday!

The Dharma School said thank

you to Rev. Bridge and Rev. Endo

and presented them with our year-

end gift. We are so very lucky to

have such extraordinary ministers!

We love their Dharma Talks and their

lessons! And now we can chant the

Shoshinge and the Wasans! Well, al-

most…

The Dharma School also said

thank you to our wonderful organ-

ists. Thank you Mr. Steve Terusaki,

Mrs. Agnes Sasaki, Mr. Robert No-

guchi and Mrs. Lianne Tsujimoto-

Wong.

Our NonPerishable Food Drive

has started. Please bring canned

food and nonperishable food to

church. We are collecting food for

the Alameda County Food Bank. At

this time of the year, they really need

help refilling their pantry. If we reach

our goal of 300 ITEMS, the Dharma

School will provide ice cream sun-

daes for everyone on March 20.

Thank you to the OBWA for their

very generous donation to the Dhar-

ma School. Their support is so ap-

preciated!

A very Happy Birthday to

our students born in February:

Henry Abrahamson, Andrew Brown,

Alexander Lang and Karina Morgan.

Wishing you all the best!!

ImpermanenceCONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE

blossoms – in spring they bloom so

beautifully, and yet they fall so soon.

This melancholy atmosphere can be

found in much Japanese art.

But impermanence can also be pos-

itive and empowering. Good times and

bad times come and go, ebbing and

fl owing like the tides. Rather than get

stuck in attachment, we can try and see

things from another perspective, trying

as best we can to be the best we can be

in this moment under the circumstanc-

es. Rather than feel trapped, we can try

to see things as they are, remembering

that all things are impermanent, and at

the same time that all things are grasped

in the compassion of the Buddha.

So at Ohigan let’s renew our dedi-

cation to the principles of the Buddha

Path – compassion & kindness, imper-

manence & interdependence – and live

our lives to the fullest! (This is a reprint

of my article from 2011 - this year we

will observe Spring Ohigan on Sunday,

March 20 – please join us!)
