Spring Garage Sale

State law limits the number of garage sales an

individual can hold to two per year (see Houston

Chronicle, Monday, 17 September 2012, page B6).

Residents who exceed that number will be treated

therefore will be in violation of the deed

restrictions. Imperial Oaks Park POA is a deed

restricted community and violations of the deed

restrictions can result in attorney action.

Please report instances of excessive garage sale

activity to the Association office.

I would like to discuss a little about one

of the more common insect pests.

Scale and Mealy Bug.

Scale is a sucking insect that pierce the

plant tissue and drink the fluids, causing

yellowing and even death to the plant.

There are 8,000 species of scale.

Scale insects have 2 body types:

armored and soft bodied

The armored scale produces a hard

waxy coating and attaches its self to a

leaf or stem.

Soft bodied scale produce a wax

coating usually looking like cotton.

Mealy Bug is in this class of scale.

Controls for scale are:

Horticultural Oil sprays – These coat

the insect and suffocate it and can only

be used in cooler temperatures.

Systemic Insecticides – These insect

killers are absorbed into the plants

system and poison the insect as it

feeds.

If you have any questions please e-mail

me at [email protected].

Spring is here and the work begins.

Many of us love to work in the yard! But

for those of you that don’t, just think of

it as an outdoor gym.

Sometime this month it will be time to

fertilize your lawn. There is no set date

to fertilize, it is all temperature related.

A good rule of thumb is when you see

your lawn 50% green, it is time to

fertilize.

Spring is the only time I recommend a

high Nitrogen fertilizer (the first number

on the bag). We usually have cooler

temperatures and enough rain to keep

for having to run the sprinkler system all

the time to keep from burning the lawn.

If you use a “Weed and Feed”

fertilizer, READ THE BAG. There are two

main herbicides in weed and feeds,

Atrazine or Trimec. They are applied

differently.
