STRAIGHT 2 PLATE PROGRAM – NATIONAL CITY
PROGRAM PURPOSETo help students achieve their fu l l academic potent ia l , t ransform and enhancethe school meal program, and improve the heal th of a community by inspir ingbehavior change related to food and heal th.
Dur ing the past year, Ol ivewoodbegan conversat ions wi th Heal thy DayPartners and Nat ional School Distr ictleadership to develop the Straight 2Plate program (S2TP) for the distr ict .The program addresses issues ofheal thy food access, nutr i t ioneducat ion, and communityengagement in the NSD system. Theprogram’s purpose is to integratefresh produce grown at Ol ivewoodinto the NSD meal program, providegarden-based nutr i t ion educat ion and
outreach opportuni t ies for staf f ,students, and fami l ies at school s i tes;and develop a repl icable S2TPcurr iculum. At the end of the 2018-2019 school year, we providedlettuce three t imes a week for al l tenschools in the district for six weeks. In the 2019-2020 school year, we planto expand what we grow for theschools to include mult ip le i tems forthe salad bars wi th feedback andeducat ional opportuni t ies for students.

Our Farm Freshcooking classes engage part ic ipants in tour ing and harvest ingveggies to take home, prepar ing and exper iment ing wi th newrecipes, and enjoying a feast on the lawn.

Family Field Tr ips to Ol ivewood are structured l ike our Chi ldren’s Program withthree act iv i t ies connect ing the environment, food, and heal th. This year, wehosted fami l ies through our partnership wi th San Ysidro Heal th Center. Famil iesare referred to our program because they are deal ing wi th diet-related heal thcondi t ions such as Type I I Diabetes and obesi ty. This program gives childrenand their parents a unique opportunity to learn together important l i festylechanges that can improve health outcomes. We also of fered a Mother ’s Day Tea program, giv ing fami l ies a fun opportuni ty tocelebrate moms whi le honing cooking ski l ls and enjoying a special meal at thegardens. This year, we began a partnership wi th Chula’s Mission, an organizat ionthat provides support to gir ls wi thout mothers. Throughout the year, we ledseveral Chefci tos cooking classes for the gir ls and their mentors.

This unique eventfeatures local chefs, cocktai l makers, brewers, and vintners wi th a menushowcasing the best of San Diego's organic and sustainable produce, f ish, meats,and confect ions. Attendees enjoy del ic ious food and dr ink, wander our beaut i fu lgardens, and learn more about our program offer ings, a l l whi le invest ing in heal thyfami l ies and a heal thy environment.

we raised almost $20,000 overour original goal!

We also created a partnership wi th localsmal l business, Epicurean San Diego, to host cul inaryadventures and farm tours at Ol ivewood.

FUNDRAISING &FINANCES
BUDGET2018-2019 was a year of s igni f icant growth for Ol ivewood Gardens. Afterwelcoming new leadership in Apr i l of 2018, our programs and staf f cont inued togrow and we had our biggest year of fundrais ing yet, ra is ing $852,901 with totalexpenses of $832,981. The coming years wil l be crit ical for our success and growth and it wil l beessential to continue to expand our funding base to meet the needs of thecommunity and continue to provide high-quality educational programs. We spent 16% on fundrais ing and general management, which included thecontracted services of a strategic planning consul tant ; 33% on propertymaintenance and management, including the growing of f ru i ts and vegetables forour programs; and 51% of expenses for program and event management anddel ivery. This year we completed our Teaching Ki tchen Remodel wi th a r ibbon-cutt ingceremony in November of 2018. We raised $162k to complete the project wi thsupport f rom our community.

GARDENPRODUCTION
Olivewood cont inues to expand i ts capaci ty to grow on our beaut i fu l 6.85 acres ofproperty. Our lower and upper gardens make up about 2 acres of our total propertyand yielded 3,341 pounds of organic produce dur ing 2018-2019. Our team of professional gardeners and dedicated volunteers grow seasonalvarieties that are featured in al l of our programs. Our crop calendar coincideswith our program curr iculum so that part ic ipants and guests exper ience true farm-to-table when cooking in the Ol ivewood ki tchen. This year we began conversat ions wi th the Chi ld Nutr i t ion Services Department atNat ional School Distr ict about growing produce for the salad bars at their schools.Dur ing the end of the spr ing semester, we harvested 700 heads of lettuce to beserved three days a week at each of the ten schools in the distr ict . We cont inue tooffer a Produce Stand dur ing our weekly Thursday Publ ic Tours. The ProduceStand has become increasingly popular among local residents and helps toincrease access to f resh, qual i ty, organic f ru i ts and vegetables in th is region.

STRATEGIC PLANNINGDuring the 2018-2019 year, Ol ivewood began our f i rst strategic planningprocess. Through guided faci l i tat ion, Ol ivewood board and staf f went through aprocess of ref lect ion, community mapping, and gather ing of input f rom ourcommunity. We are in the f inal stages of th is process and look forward torol l ing out our strategic v is ion, goals, and in i t iat ives for cont inuing andimproving our work.
As Olivewood Gardens embarks into our 10th year of programs, we areexcited to continue to transform the way our community connects withfood and the environment. We are improving behaviors by empoweringadults and children to take control of their health through food and arecommitted to deepening and widening our impact. In the coming year,we look forward to new projects and milestones on our horizon and to
continue the work of supporting our community.
10 YEAR ANNIVERSARYWe are thr i l led to celebrate 10 years of work in our community in 2020. Tocelebrate, we wi l l e levate programs, pursue opportuni t ies to highl ight programsuccesses and engaged part ic ipants, and open our doors to the community. Wewi l l ro l l out a 10-year anniversary campaign with a comprehensive goal ofrais ing support to br ing al l 10 Nat ional School Distr ict schools to exper ienceour Chi ldren’s Program, scale our Cooking for Salud program, enhance ourInternship Programs, and increase our cul t ivated property.
NATIONAL CITY SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPWe wi l l cont inue to bui ld on our exist ing relat ionship wi th Nat ional SchoolDistr ict by providing wrap-around wel lness and nutr i t ion educat ion in ourHealthy School Community model.
