March is women’s History Month so we are addressing several women’s health concerns. Many of the risk factors can be eliminated at an early age to try to prevent problems which could arise later on. I am going to address 3 of the biggest women’s health concerns: heart disease, breast cancer, and depression. I hope you find this helpful

and informative.

Concerns

Page 9: IMPACT! Positive Change Magazine Mar Issue

Heart disease is the leading killer of both men and women. In

women, the condition is responsible for about 29% of deaths,

according to the CDC. There is also significant disability caused

by heart disease. Average life expectancy for females in 2013 is

about 82 years. Heart disease is causing death of women in their

60s, which is considered a premature death. Additionally, the

limitations on activities such as walking even relatively short

distances, climbing stairs or experiencing shortness of breath

from less than moderate activity can be very disabling.

The American Heart Association lists risk factors for heart disease as:

• Increasing age

• Male sex (men typically develop heart dis-ease at a younger age)

• Heredity (including race). People with family history of the disease have greater risk. So do African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, and some Asian-Americans.

• Smoking

HeART DiseAse

• High blood cholesterol

• High blood pressure

• Physical inactivity

• Obesity and overweight

• Diabetes

Written byDavid baron, m.D.

Several of the risk factors, such as increasing age and hereditary factors and being male, are not really under your control. other factors, such as smoking, high cholesterol, hypertension, obesity and physical inactivity can be modified by medication and lifestyle change. Your doctor can only go so far in eliminating a certain amount of your risk and the rest is up to you.

what does it take for someone to stand out from the crowd and make a true difference

on this planet? why is it that some people can manifest their results and get their voices heard while others fall into the roll of victims of their circumstances?

As a Transformational Coach and Speaker I have worked with over nine thousand graduates of mySeminars and millions have watched and listened to my message through media.

The people I work with are leaders that are committed to leave a legacy of contribution in the world. This has allowed me to understand what the belief sys-tems are and the essence of those who succeed in every area of life! I believe the key component in the way of being of those who achieve success is leadership. Now the question is what is Leadership? Leadership is influence, John C. Maxwell once said.

Some people think that the leaders are only the ones in the spot light or are the people responsible for making a project or vision work. The truth is that we are all leaders. Every person no matter what it does is influencing their environment for good or not. You are the leader of your life, your actions and your choices have a direct impact in our society.

Think about this for a moment. what you eat for example influences your health. This impacts the quality of your life. This also affects your relationships & your finances that, at the same time are impacting the economy and the evolution of your generation. You are leading by every bite you take.

There are levels of awareness that will allow you to take your leadership role to the next level. These levels can be implemented in any order to accomplish a har-monic avalanche of extraordinary results.

1. Purpose: You are in this planet to serve and that is your main purpose. To recognize this and own it, is to open the space for your mission to emerge and expand it through humanity. A powerful leader knows what his life’s purpose is and he is willing to dedicate his own life to manifest it.

2. Intention: An extraordinary leader is moved by the intention of contribution and not by the ego’s need of recognition or money and because of this; he/she will always be rewarded with the abundance and acknowledgement of those who witness and benefit from his/her work.

3. Responsibility: You must take responsibility for everything that has happened to you during your life. All has been part of a perfect plan to help your evolution in this planet. Every challenge, every pain is contributing to build your spiritual foundation to receive all the blessings of a life of service. This will also allow you to share your wisdom and help those who will be going through a similar experience.

4. Celebrate: Acknowledge your accomplishments big and small. Each time you celebrate your light you will inspire others to do the same.

5. Be accountable: Jim Rohn said that a good objective of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and to help those who are doing well to do even better.

6. Congruency: You must walk your talk. people will follow that lead of a person of integrity while others may not agree with your beliefs; they will still respect them as much as you respect yourself. Be very clear of what your values are, have a very specific vision of what you stand for in life and be implacable with your word and honor your core values 100%.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. It is second to lung cancer as the leading cause of death for women. It is very important that women keep the emotional

issues in perspective and not allow the fear of breast cancer stop them from going to the doctor for screening or pushing them into making a rash decision on surgery. women should educate themselves about the issues. The diagnosis of breast cancer is not an automatic death sentence.

The treatment for each specific instance of breast cancer depends on the type of cancer and the stage. There are various options including breast preservation type surgery and immediate breast reconstruction for the cases that require a more extensive tissue removal.

women who are diagnosed with breast cancer before age 40 have slightly poorer prognoses than older women: Their five-year survival rate is about 82 percent, compared with 85 percent among women ages 40 to 74, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).

iMPACT! Positive Change

Page 17: IMPACT! Positive Change Magazine Mar Issue

The American Cancer Society lists the following as risk factors for breast cancer:

• Increasing age

• Genes. Nearly 5% to 10% of breast cancer is linked to mutations in certain genes (most commonly, the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes).

• Family history of the disease

• Personal history of the disease

• Race. White women have a slightly greater risk of getting breast cancer compared with African-American women. Yet African-Americans have a greater chance of dying from this disease.

risK FactorsFor breast cancer

• Earlier abnormal breast biopsy

• Earlier chest radiation

• Early onset of menstruation (before age 12) or menopause after age 55

• Not having children

• Medication use, such as diethylstilbestrol (DES)

• Too much alcohol

• Obesity

The American Cancer Society, recommends controlling your weight, exercising, quitting smoking, and talking to your doctor.

Karen Hoyos is a Colombian native, whom at the age of eight was influenced by the Quantum physics and personal Development books her grandmother used to read. Karen says, “My life was not congruent with the knowledge I had.” She recalls the pain, difficulties and near death experiences she encountered, as a result of domestic violence. “I didn’t understand how I knew so much about personal development, the power of the mind and what it can create and yet I had such a messed up life,” says Karen.

Throughout her struggles, Karen started to look for answers, as to why her life had been turned upside down. During this time, Karen received an invitation from her mother to come live with her in the United States. In 2003, she left Colombia pregnant with twins to begin a new life.

Karen was ready to begin her new adventure in the US. with a basic understanding of the English language and while going through a painful divorce, she needed a change. Shortly after her arrival, Karen was invited to a Seminar where world-renown, Self-Help Author and Motivational Speaker, Tony Robbins was speaking. Karen described this event as; dynamic and exciting. Karen said; “There was a moment when everything was in silence. There was a bright light on stage in front of the speaker. At that moment, I heard god’s voice say; ‘Karen this is what you are going to be doing for the rest of your life!’ As crazy as it sounded, I began questioning myself.” Karen began to wonder how she was going to obtain such goals and become a moti-vational speaker, as she was certain that her life was not in a good place. Karen decided to surrender to her purpose by investing all her time and life- savings into seminars, training and life-coaching. Shortly after, she began applying the quantum knowledge that she held for so long to her everyday life.

Many people told Karen her idea of becoming a Motivational Speaker was an unrealistic goal. However, she maintained devoted to her purpose in life. In fact, she knew she had been granted the unique gift of empowering others to find and live their life’s purpose. She said, “My definition of life’s purpose is doing what you love the most and using it to serve other people while creating abundance.”

Karen’s goals and purpose started to take place as she began meeting influential people. Karen first spoke on national television before she began her seminars. Never knowing what she was going to say, Karen feels her words come from a higher power. “I have the ability to inspire people to live, find and expand their life’s purpose. If someone does not know what their purpose is, they will find it in a two minute conversation with me. If someone knows what their purpose is but they are not living it, coaching with me will enable them to live it. If someone is already living their life’s purpose, using my tools they will get to expand it and make a global impact,” says Karen. Karen Hoyos is an expert in motivating one to find their true purpose in life.

Karen continues her humanitarian missions by traveling around the world, connecting people to their life’s purpose, speaking on television shows and delivering seminars around the globe. Currently, Karen Hoyos is an advocate and a humanitarian for the “Children for a New planet Foundation” and “Milagros Day worldwide” while bringing about awareness and speaking out on domestic violence, sexual child abuse and other social conditions.

Seven years ago, Karen began the process of transforming her life and the lives of others. She has reached over 40 million people around the world. She is a fighter, who fought to achieve her life’s purpose. Karen’s story can be closely related to many of us. often times, we do not realize our life’s purpose until something dramatic happens. we must motivate ourselves to struggle and fight to reach our goals, because despite what others may say, deep down inside everyone has a purpose.

Depression appears to affect more women than men. The Na-tional Institute of Mental Health reports that about 12 million women are affected by a depressive disorder each year

compared to about 6 million men.

Many psychologists feel that women have more of a need for a connection with others than men do. If that connection is lacking, it can lead to depression.

Sometimes, hormonal changes can also trigger the condition, particularly after pregnancy (postpartum) or around menopause.

If you develop depressed feelings, feelings of worthlessness, sleep disorder, or other symptoms that may indicate depression, be sure to discuss this with your doctor. Anti-depressant medication is not necessarily needed for treatment. You and your doctor can decide the best way to proceed.

Other risk factors for depression include:

• A previous depressive episode

• Family history of depression

• History of heart problems

• Serious chronic illness

• Marital problems

• Substance abuse

• Use of drugs that could trigger depression, such as medicines for high blood pressure or seizures

• A stressful life event, such as job loss or death

• Diseases that could trigger depression, such as vitamin deficiency and thyroid disease

• Recent serious illness or surgery

• Childhood history of physical or sexual abuse

• Being a worrier or being overly anxious

• Having an eating disorder or an anxiety disorder

A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:

1) The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun! , braid, or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. women with short hair are not common targets.

2) The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women who’s clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.

3)They also look for women using their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.

4) The number one place women are abducted from / attacked at is grocery store parking lots.

5) Number two is office parking lots/garages.

6) Number three is public restrooms.

7) The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don’t have to worry about getting caught.

8) If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn’t worth it because it will be time-consuming.

9) These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas,or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.

10) Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you’re not worth it.

YoUrselF From a raPistPROTECTING

Page 29: IMPACT! Positive Change Magazine Mar Issue

POINTs THAT WE sHOULD REmEmBER:

1) If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk: can’t believe it is so cold out here, we’re in for a bad winter. Now that you’ve seen their faces and could identify them in a line- up, you lose appeal as a target.

2) If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they’d leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.

3) If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yelling I HAVE pEppER SpRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.

4) If someone grabs you, you can’t beat them with strength but you can do it by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh – HARD. one woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it really hurts.

5) After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guy’s parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you’ll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause him a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and he’s out of there.

6) when the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.

iMPACT! Positive Change

Page 30: IMPACT! Positive Change Magazine Mar Issue

7) of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, don’t dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel little silly at the time, but you’d feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.

FINALLY, PLEAsE REmEmBER THEsE As WELL …

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do it.

2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New orleans : if a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, Do NoT HAND IT To HIM. Toss it away from you…. chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE oTHER DIRECTIoN!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won’t see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4. women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DoN’T Do THIS! The predator will be watch-ing you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SooN AS YoU CLoSE the DooRS , LEAVE.

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:

a. Be aware: look around your car as someone may be hiding at the passenger side , peek into your car, inside the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. (Do THIS Too BEFoRE RIDINg A TAXI CAB) .

b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial kill-

ers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.

c. Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALwAYS BETTER To BE SAFE THAN SoRRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALwAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).

7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALwAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely wILL NoT be a vital organ. RUN!

8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STop IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALwAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked “for help” into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it and it’s better safe than sorry.

As a Juvenile Correctional officer I have seen both young women and men filter in and out of the system who are struggling with negative self-image issues. As an adolescent, having

battled anorexia and bulimia from the age of 14, into young adulthood I recognize the signs. we all know it is far too common for young girls and yes, even young men to develop eating disorders, depression, and self-loathing as a result of the images they are bombarded with by our media. we all know that sex sells….but at what cost. I have often wondered how

HoWYoUseeYoUrselF?I can possibly compete in influencing the youth I

encounter, when they are saturated by unrealistic imagery day in and day out. perhaps I have underestimated the effect we can have on the young adults in our lives. It was in discussing this with a friend that I was able to come up with a new approach. The answer although simple in theory, can be extremely complex to put into action.

Imagine the IMpACT! we could have if we proclaimed acceptance of ourselves and celebrated what we see as beautiful about ourselves. Those of you who have teenagers in your life are probably painfully aware that the lecturing approach is typically less than successful. You are also aware that they observe our every move to see if we are practicing what we preach. I believe our attitudes, words, and actions have the potential to be more powerful than the media. we just need to exercise that power. Here are a few steps that we can do to help the young women and men in our lives develop a healthy self-image. please take a minute to consider these steps and how you can implement them into your life.

Teach the young men and women in our lives that their self-worth is defined by their spirit and character, not by their outer beauty and social status. Encourage them to follow their passions so that they have a positive focus other than their physical appearance.

Compliment others for attributes that you consider to be beautiful and strong, not the attributes that the media tells us are they expectations for beauty and strength. Make it a point to do this in the company of the young people in your life so they realize that beauty and strength come in all forms.

Find the attributes that you are proud of and let them be known. This is not a display of vanity. By embracing what you see as beautiful about yourself, you are teaching them to not define themselves by the opinions of pop culture. Your ability to display self-confidence can inspire them to love themselves for their individuality.

Build yourself up. Let the only words that come out of your mouth regarding your self worth be positive. This is extremely difficult as we are our hardest critics. what we must consider is, do want to reinforce the tendency our youth already have to put themselves down?

Be cognizant of the role that you play in helping the young men and women in your life develop a healthy self-image. Embrace the responsibility and the influence you can have on the men and women they may become. It is your decision if this will be positive or negative.

we owe it to the youth in our lives to help guide them to their happiness.

what would you become if you were told you could be whatever you wanted right now? what goals do you have that you would bring into fruition at this very mo-

ment? what if with a flip of a switch you could make all your dreams turn into reality? well, unfortunately the true reality is these goals will remain dreams until the proper effort is put towards manifesting them.

In our society we want immediate results. we are in a hurry to grow up. we want to lose weight in a blink of an eye, and get to whatever destinations we travel to in the quickest time possible. one major component we always seem to forget is involved is hard work. without the drive and passion, it is difficult to put forth the hard work you need towards building a strong foundation. Sometimes our goals don’t motivate us enough. what if these goals are not our own, but in fact someone else’s expectations for us? Therefore, they may need adjustment in order to ensure that that tiny flame inside stays lit, fueling your drive.

If there is one thing for certain, success does not come easy. It will take a lot of planning and preparation to get where you want to go. You will have to be consistent and have the patience and faith that your dreams will become reality. By living in the vision of what you want to achieve every day and feeling the excitement

of that achievement is powerful! There is nothing like having enthusiasm for life and your goals, but it will be a long road headed there, so you must be patient.

In the Far East, there is a tree called the Chinese Bamboo Tree. This tree can grow up to 90 feet tall in just 6 weeks. Seems to be the fastest growing tree in the world right? Despite the results of its amazing growth in this short period of time, it takes 5 years before it breaks the ground. You see, during those years it must be watered and fertilized consistently. If during those 5 years, any of that is discontinued the seed will die in the ground.

our dreams and our goals have to be nurtured just like the Chinese Bamboo Tree. we must have patience and engage in consistent action towards turning them into our reality. You may be at a point in your life while reading this, where you want to give up. However, if you keep going, if you keep striving, success is right around the corner. If you are having negative thoughts or the negative thoughts of others are intervening, you can change this. Surround yourself with a support team. Not everyone who is around you will be for you. The realization of this can allow you to break free and break through. Like one of my favorite motivation speakers, Les Brown always says, “You don’t get in life what you want; you get in life what you are”.
