On Thursday, February 11, thedome of Soufriere Hill, theactive volcano in Montserrat, partially collapsed, sending aplume of ash high into the sky, according to the VolcanicObservatory Guadeloupe(OVSG). Their report noted thatthe eruption began at 12:35pm(GMT-4) and lasted for 55 min-utes, peaking at 1:04pm, afterwhich time the volcanic activitydecreased. The ash might havespewed as high as nine miles (obser-vations by a un pilot, while officialsreport six miles) and blew toward theeast, then southeast. Falling ashaffected the northeast of Montserrat, the southwest of Antigua, Guade-loupe, and Dominica. Ash from theeruption also dusted the NorthernIslands, but to a lesser degree. After being dormant for almost fourcenturies, le volcano in Montserraterupted on July 19, 1995. The lava

flow and volcanic ash destroyed thecapital city of Plymouth, and twothirds of the 12,000 inhabitants ofMontserrat found refuge on the north-ern side of the island, in a zoneuntouched by the volcanic activity. When the dome exploded again onJuly 13, 2003, the Northern Islandswere covered with a fine layer of ash,due to the direction of the wind. For additional information:www.mvo.ms

Impact On Regional Air TrafficRegional air traffic in theCaribbean was disrupted afterthe explosion of Soufriere Hill, the volcano in Montserrat. InSaint Barth, all flights to andfrom Guadeloupe were can-celled as the airport was coveredwith up to ? inch of ash after theeruption. Flights to Juliana andother destinations served byGustav III Airport were not

affected. On Friday afternoon, Liat, one of the major regional airlines, suspended all flights to and fromDominica, la Guadeloupe, andAntigua, as there were clouds of ashsuspended in the air. Flights werealso cancelled to and from Anguilla,St Kitts, Nevis, and Sint Maarten, where the Air France flight scheduledfor Saturday was postponed untilSunday.

A West Indies resident for26 years, Yves-Marie deMalleray’s second exhibitin Saint Barthélemy takesplace through Friday, Feb-ruary 26, at the Grain deSel restaurant in Saline. The exhibit features paint-ings of the island’s fish andbirds. Trained as an agriculturalengineer, de Malleray orig-inally moved to Martiniqueto create shrimp nurseries, but never gave up on thepassion he had for art eversince he was a child inFrance: especially paintingnature and wild animals. Apainter who is concernedabout the environment, heuses his work to shine thespotlight on endangeredspecies, and to call for the

respect of natural beauty.Accomplished technically,de Malleray takes the timeto actually experience theemotions he transmits ontothe canvas via his brushes. He has mastered theprocess of bas-relief,which according to thelight on the paintings, allows a second layer to beseen: the environment ofthe principal subject.Yves-Marie de Malleray, who is also a designer forHermes, and does interiordesign for cruise ships andhotels, has returned to theWest Indies after exhibitsin Tokyo, Dubai, andParis.Opening Friday, February19 from 5:00 to 8:00pm

When you meetHawaiian guitarplayer, Makana,

you are immediately takenwith the sincerity heshows toward his music, and realize that he holds amusical tradition from hisnative islands on hisshoulders. It is also naturalthat this resident of theisland of Oahu, who livesat the base of DiamondHead, would feel at homeon the island of SaintBarthélemy, where he cansurf and play music withlocal talents such as Henriand Léon Ledée.

A guest of the St BarthMusic Festival in 2008,Makana is back on theisland where he will per-form two concerts this

week: the first is a sologuitar concert at Le Toiny, where he will play duringa special dinner at LeGaïac on Friday, February19. The following evening,Saturday, February 20 histrio will perform at ZionGarden in Saline (a con-cert organized by the asso-ciation Saint B’Art) withmusicians Nathan Aweauon bass and vocals, andLopaka Colon on percus-sion. “They are both full-on Hawaiians and greatmusicians in their ownright. It’s like multiplyingme by three,” saysMakana, the king ofHawaiian slack key guitar,or Ki Ho’alu.

“Music chose me,” hereplies when asked about

his choice of career. “Istarted playing at the ageof 7.” He learned from theslack key masters and nowholds that honor at the ageof 31. “There is only oneyounger player,” he notes.“We are keeping thismusic alive by a thinthread. “The music I playis classical in culturalterms.”

Makana has taken this tra-ditional Hawaiian style—in which the guitar stringsare “slack” and tuned to achord—and applied it toother musical styles, frombluegrass to rock. Whenhe plays acoustic guitar, people are amazed at thefullness of the sound. “Itsounds like three guitars atonce,” says the youngslack key master. “Youplay the bass, rhythm, andmelody at the same time. It’s hard to learn, and hardto play, but first nature tome now,” he notes, strum-ming the strings on hiswell-used guitar.

The concert at Le Toinywill be very intimate: “Iam very sensitive to theenergy of each place Iplay,” says Makana, whotailors each show to thevenue. In contrast, the per-formance at Zion Gardenwill be more high-energyand dynamic. This youngmusician, who has playedfor fellow HawaiianBarack Obama at theWhite House, finds musicto be “the most effectiveway to share your feelingswith someone.” Clearlyhis self-expression iseffective, as Esquire mag-azine wrote: “Slack keyguitar music, indigenousto Hawaii, is older than theblues, and Makana is con-sidered the greatest livingplayer.” Makana: Solo concert anddinner at Le Toiny, Friday,February 19, 8pm. 85euros per person.

Makana Trio: Saturday,February 20, 8pm, ZionGarden. Tickets 10 euros, for sale at the door.

Tatiana Shalygina, co-director ofIndependent Media SanomaMagazines, one of the largestpublishing houses in Moscow, recently visited Saint Barth at theinvitation of Oxana Favard, whoruns the local company, Mediaand Communication (S.I.C.),which represents the IndependentMedia Group on the island. Thisbusiness trip resulted in a largearticle on Saint Barth that willappear in the fall issue of theRussian edition of National Geo-graphic Traveler, as well as 60other magazines and newspapersedited by the company. This is a greatshowcase for the island as it is pro-pelled onto the Russian scene. Launched three years ago, the Russianedition of National Geographic Travel-er is printed with 140,000 copies (withan estimated 500,000 readers) and is aleading travel resource. According toShalygina, Saint Barth combine the

perfect ingredients to attract a well-heeled Russian clientele: “Warmwaters, great weather, a sense of secu-rity, fine dining and good wines, everything this clientele is looking foris here,” notes Shalygina, who wasseduced by the charm of the island:“At the hotel, in the restaurants, in theshops, one feels as if one is among

friends. You can be yourself with-out attracting attention, and donot have a play a role. That is areal plus. Especially for thoseMuscovites who are confrontedwith the stress of daily life aswell as the cold for many monthsof the year!” Questioned aboutthe perception the Russians haveabout Saint Barth, Shalyginaindicated that the destination isbecome more and more à lamode. She added that the specialvisa required for Saint Barth isnot a problem as the Russians are

used to requested visas wheneverthey travel.

Special thanks : Oxana Favard wouldlike to thank Alexandre Firer, manag-er of the Carl Gustaf, Air France andespecially Thomas Wolf, as well asAlamo car rental, the Wall House andDo Brazil restaurants.

A sculptor who makesjewelry, and a self-defined formalist,

Dave Stevenson will openhis annual show at LesArtisans in Gustavia onFriday, February 19, withsome interesting newpieces: some to collect, asin his bronze sculptures, and some to wear, as in hisprimarily sterling silverrings, bracelets, andpendants.

Dogs, dolphins, cats, fangs, and wings: the animalkingdom can be found inhis work. In fact, in addi-tion to his main website atwww.artinjection.com,Stevenson is working oncreating a second website,

www.sculpturezoo.com,where he says, “my sculp-tures meet, mate, and mul-tiply.” This slightly off-kil-ter idea is reflected in someof his new work: smallsculptures that mix andmarry elements from someof his other pieces. “Theyare modulations and muta-tions of the bigger pieces,”he says, pointing out a ster-ling silver iguana head witha sparkling ruby eye mar-ried to wings and set on abronze base, or the combi-nation of a bunny and adog, or a double dolphindesign in the shape of abutterfly. “It is challengingto take a sculpture and cutit into pieces and rebuild,”admits Stevenson, who cre-

ates every piece from awire armature, and notes:“Sometimes thin pieces ofbronze echo the skeleton ofthe sculpture or its arma-ture,” he says. “There aresoft curves and sharpangles. Aggressive yetalluring.”

In addition to the smallpieces, and his primarilyunisex jewelry, Stevensonalso has two larger sculp-tures at Les Artisans thatare visually compelling. The first is a dramatic, 33”-tall, 50-pound sculpturecalled Crush, which wasseen in his show last year, and was designed usingsteel wire and resin, thencast in bronze. Crush looksdifferent as you walkaround it, while admiringthe strong, abstract shapes, and deep black and redmarbleized patina. Makingis debut in Saint Barth thisyear is a slightly smallerwork, entitled Nautilus (aworking title, as Stevensonoften changes the names ofhis pieces and this one hasnot been seen anywhereelse yet), in which part ofthe bronze shape curveslike a Nautilus shell. “I hadset this piece aside unfin-ished for a while,” he says.“Then I changed the shapeand once I liked it, cast in

bronze. It was completedjust a few weeks ago.”

Stevenson, who enjoys thechallenge of going in newdirections, notes that hiswork is getting more com-plex: “My primary interestis in large sculpture,” hesays, adding that he wouldlike to create pieces on the12’-15’ range. And eventhough he envisions hiswork on a monumentalscale, it reads extremelywell small, as in the silverpendants that echo theshapes of his bronzes.“Even the jewelry is sculp-tural,” he adds, noting thatduring his opening on Feb-ruary 19, he plans to auc-tion off a miniature treas-ure chest with surpriseobjects in silver, gold, andbronze.

Defining himself as a for-malist—the concert that theartistic value of a piece isentirely determined by itsform, the way it is made, and its purely visualaspects—Stevenson hopesthat the conceptual shapesof his pieces encouragepeople to react on theirown, as they respond emo-tionally to his work.

Less than two months from thestart, 35 boats have alreadysigned up to participate in thefirst edition of Les Voiles deSaint Barth, April 6-11, 2010.

First leg for ICAPIn the Super Yacht catego-ry, where 24 boats over 78feet have pre-registered,one of the stars is ICAPLeopard 3, with her Britishowner Mike Slade. Designedby Bruce Farr, she is about toleave Australia, where she hasundergone major work in theyard where she was built, to headfor the Caribbean. St. Barth willbe her first port of call before hermajor challenge this summer, which involves tackling theNorth Atlantic record from Westto East that is currently held byMari-Cha IV (6 days, 17 hours, and 52 minutes). While the presence of ICAPLeopard 3 is in itself a majorevent, the battle with otherequally prestigious boats, suchas the large ketch Sojana (115’),DSK (Swan 90), the 148-footerSaudade, and the Briand-designed Hamilton II (115’),means we can look forward tosome glorious yachtingmoments.

Gaff rigsand teak decksThose who love beautiful classicyachts will have their appetitesfilled as the elegant traditionalhulls of Kate, Wild Horses,White Wings, and Lone Fox willbe joining in the fun. Kate willbe making her long-awaitedreturn to racing in St. Barth afterher winter break. This magnifi-cent gaff-rigged schooner ofalmost 24 metres was built in2006, based on designs by AlfredMylne dating back to 1908.

Modern yachts out inforce

Swan 45’s, Dufours, Archam-baults... designed for day

races, the finest ‘racing’yachts of the momentcould not miss this newdate on the Caribbean cal-endar. Puffy, a Swan 45belonging to the event’s“godfather,” PatrickDemarchelier, Sonodia III

Swan 45, Victor, are typicalof the cruising boats, fitted out

to perform well with a crew inclose contact racing.
