About Coventry Building Society Coventry Building Society is a mutual organisation owned by you, our members. Our story is a strong one: for over 135 years, we’ve put our members first. We keep your money safe and provide great value and service. We are also growing our membership and investing in your future, looking forward not back to stay relevant in a changing world.

Branches are changingWe’re committed to providing the very best branch service for years to come. That’s why we’re investing in the redesign of our branches, making them accessible, welcoming and easy to use. We’ve already started in Coventry and you can see the benefits of the new design at our Cheylesmore and Arena branches, which have been getting fantastic feedback from members.

Members tell us they want to be able to talk to us face-to-face about their money. So our updated branch design has far more space so we can sit down with you to help with more complex queries when it’s safe to do so.

Of course, people still need to be able to pay in and withdraw from their accounts, and we haven’t forgotten about that. Members tell us they prefer the human touch, and you’ll still have that at your local Coventry branch, even if it’s just a quick visit.

A trend in today’s financial services, even before the current pandemic, is that people are doing more transactions themselves rather than in branches. This is particularly affecting our branches, some of which are close together or on quieter high streets.

And research shows that while people in Coventry – and across the UK – are visiting high street branches less these days, a convenient shopping location with somewhere to park is top of the list when they do.

We want people to save with Coventry Building Society, and so it is important that we’ve got the right branches, in the right locations, with the right opening hours to meet the needs of our members.

4

What changes are we making? We’re opening our first new branch in Coventry for 16 years as part of a £5.5m investment to transform our branch network across the city.

The new branch will be at Warwickshire Shopping Park, Binley which is conveniently just off the A46. The work has already started ahead of opening in spring 2021. We’ve also recently re-opened Arena branch after its refurbishment which offers a full range of services. Following members’ feedback, this also includes a new counter service.

As part of our investment, we’ll also be rolling out the new design that you can already see at Cheylesmore branch, to Jubilee Crescent and Binley Road branches.

As part of the changes we’re making in the city, we’ll also be closing three of our branches – Coundon, Holbrooks and Stoke. This has been a difficult decision but a combination of location, other branches close by, the constraints of the premises and changes in how people are using our branches means we think it’s the right one. Colleagues from these branches will move to other branches in Coventry.

Who you can speak to

If you think you might be affected by this, just visit your local branch and speak to the team there. Or you can call us on 0800 121 8899.

Matt Mannings, Head of Branch Network at Coventry Building Society, said:

“Coventry is on the move, with City of Culture round the corner and substantial investment in our city over the past few years. The city looks and feels different from when our branches were first opened and we want to have the best branches in the best locations, to serve the city as it is today and into the future too.

“We’ve seen the importance of branches throughout the pandemic and this investment secures their place in Coventry. As the city’s local building society we’re committed to providing the very best branch service to our savers and borrowers for years to come.

“This isn’t the end of our investment in the city. We’re looking at other opportunities across Coventry, including improving our presence in the city centre and we’re looking forward to sharing those plans next year and beyond.”

Impact Assessment – how and why we decided to do thisThe Access to Banking Standard requires organisations to publish an Impact Assessment when they close any branches.

We’ve chosen to publish this document to do the right thing for our members, to make sure they’re informed of our plans. In this instance we are closing our Coundon, Holbrooks and Stoke branches while upgrading the services we provide at our Arena branch, updating the design and capability of our Jubilee Crescent and Binley Road branches and opening a brand new branch at Warwickshire Shopping Park.

Two weeks before the closure of one our branches, we’ll provide an update with any feedback we’ve received and how we’re going to answer any issues or concerns raised.

When we were looking at local branches in Coventry, we considered a number of things. First of all, we thought about how it might impact any members. We looked at how suitable each location is, including how they are being used, and what alternatives there are for members in each area.

Why are we closing these three branches?Transactions have fallen across our branch network. However, in Coventry this is happening in some branches at a faster rate than others, particularly branches that are close to each other or on quieter high streets. Over the last five years, the number of people using our Coundon, Holbrooks and Stoke branches has been falling.

Reduction in transactions over the last five years (%)*

% of people who use the branch more than once a month**

Coundon -26% 21%

Holbrooks -17% 25%

Stoke -28% 20%

*Data reflects transactions between 1st March 2015 – 29th February 2020

** Based on transactions between 1st September to 30th November 2019

We want our branches to work for everyone and at these three branches, a combination of location, the constraints of the premises and changes in how people are using our branches means they aren’t as suitable as they used to be.

Holbrooks closureWe’re expecting Holbrooks branch to close on Saturday 17 April 2021.

Many of our members have been asking for a counter service to be put into our Arena Shopping Park branch. And we believe that by doing this, the number of people using our Holbrooks branch will decrease even further as more people will favour a central location with better parking and shopping facilities.
