A Message from Fr. Rolly… May 24, 2020 The Ascension of the Lord Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I pray that you all are in good spirits as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord this weekend. I would like to inform you about the current update concerning the liturgical guidelines set by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Our parish church celebrated mass with the community last March 15, 2020. Immediately, the following day, Monday, we received an email communication from the Archdiocese telling us to stop celebrating mass in public. The Archbishop declared that all the faithful people of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are dispensed from attending Sunday mass starting immediately until further notice due to the spread of coronavirus that causes the disease called COVID-19. That was the time when we literally closed the church for any public services. Sometime after the announcement, we started to make our daily celebration of the mass available to the public via Live Streaming on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ihmcla). By the first week of April, another communication from the Archdiocese instructed all parishes to continue maintaining the status quo until a go-signal from civil authorities comes out. We waited until May 15 for that go-signal. Unfortunately, just a week ago, Archbishop Jose H. Gomez informed us that the ‘Stay-Home-Safe’ order continues until further notice. That means that we are not yet allowed to open the church to the public and that we continue to make our daily mass available online through Facebook Live Streaming. It has been quiet a while since we try our best to do our part in helping mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. I believe we are on the right track in our efforts to flatten the curve of the infection. Sooner than later, the church doors will open again for public worship. However, it will not be the same as usual anymore. We are going to face a “new normal” situation following recommendations from CDC and State Health Department guidelines, not to mention Church protocols and all. I hope that when this time comes we are ready for the grand opening. We need to organize ourselves to ensure that the church is ready for the faithful to worship in a safe and clean environment relative to the spreading of the infection. We live in a very challenging time. This is something we do not expect to happen in our lifetime. However, I am confident that we can go through this victorious. Let us remember once again the words of the Lord when he ascended into heaven. It is the mandate of the Church to continue spreading, definitely, not the virus, but the good news of Jesus Christ our Risen Lord to the whole world. Now that we are almost at the end of this pandemic, let us be ready to spread our wings once again and shout to the world that Jesus is Lord, today, tomorrow, and forever. May the Lord continue to keep us safe and healthy as we prepare for the end of this pandemic to come in our history. Let our journey of faith continue even in the midst of this difficult challenge. And, may the Immaculate Heart of Mary accompany us always in this difficult task of bearing witness to Christ’s love and mercy to all we meet. Stay home, stay safe, and observe social distancing when in public places. God bless us all.

Father Tino’s Corner... Ascension of the Lord In the Gospel we have just heard the final instructions of Our Lord, his Last Will and Testament. Just before leaving them, he reminds them of what he expects of them. Previously he had sent them to spread the Kingdom of God. Those who go in his name do so with his authority. Authority goes with the mission, so to speak. In Matthew's version, now he adds this great promise: "I am with you always, even until the end of time." Mark says that the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message with the signs that accompanied him. ” And Luke emphasizes that they will be "clothed with power from on high," that is, with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is very definite about what he has to say. Like any gathering of people, the feelings of his disciples were varied. But he sends them to speak and act on his behalf. His mission was easy and difficult: easy to understand, but difficult to carry out. It was to teach others everything he had taught them. Just as he asked them to follow his path, they should ask others to follow him as well. Has a doctor ever prescribed antibiotics for you? The most basic guide on antibiotics is to complete the course. Even if the patient begins to feel good after a few days, stopping the medication can worsen his condition. Similarly, the message of salvation must continue to be shared until the end of time. With all the changes in the church and in society, neither Jesus nor his message have changed. His Gospel continues to be a call to live our lives to the fullest. You can write a new page of the Gospel every day, through everything you do and what you say. Others read what you write, be faithful and true. God is with us always. This can be a real help against loneliness. Being alone is not the same as living alone. One can feel lonely on a busy street. This especially applies to those who believe in the promise: "I am with you always." Simple words are required to speak to him. If we are open to his presence in our hearts, and we treasure it, we can fully experience that "Joy of the Gospel" that always communicates something new to our lives.

“PUSHED” OUT ON MISSION

There is a delightful character in the original Dr. Dolittle Tales called the

“Pushmi-Pullyu.” It is a beast with two identical halves, with a head at each

end. No matter which direction the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and

the other is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the life of the

church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it is the ascension of Christ

that calls for the Holy Spirit, which consequently sends or “pushes” the church

out on its mission. This is the message that we hear from the angels today as

they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the clouds, but to get busy. It

is the message of Jesus himself in Matthew’s Gospel, as he sends

them out to baptize. He also tells them, “I am with you always, until the end of

the age” (Matthew 28:20). And it is this message, confident in faith that Jesus

has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls” us along to our final destiny. The life

of the faithful disciple, sent into the world on mission, will one day know the

SAINT PHILIP NERI (1515-1595)

Feast Day: May 26

In a shop near the Vatican,

a group of Americans laughed as the shopkeeper

showed off his fluent English and latest souvenir,

a key ring whose papal

portrait, when pressed, activated a recorded

blessing. Through the shop window, two clerics

scowled disapproval. The shopkeeper grunted,

“They’re a very somber order who’ve left the Church. I

recognize them.” “By their long robes?” an American asked. “Many in Rome wear robes,” replied the shopkeeper.

“It’s their long faces!” When Philip Neri arrived in sixteenth-century Rome, there was reason to be somber. Swiss Guards

had been massacred on Saint Peter’s steps defending the pope. Parts of Europe were abandoning the Church. But

Philip resolved to be an “apostle of joy,” drawing especially

the young to Christ—and frequent confession and Communion—by his sincere interest in their problems,

prayerful example, and gentle humor. His “Oratory,” a movement as well as a place, provided recreation and

devotion in a joyful atmosphere of companionship, service, and liturgy. Philip Neri challenges each of us

to begin improving Church and world by changing ourselves with unfailing joy.

Mensaje de nuestro parroco, Fr. Rolly…

25 de mayo, 2020 La Ascensión del Señor Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, oro para que todos ustedes estén de buen humor mientras celebramos la solemnidad de la Ascensión del Señor este fin de semana. Me gustaría informarle sobre la actualización actual sobre las pautas litúrgicas establecidas por la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles.

Nuestra iglesia parroquial celebró misa con la comunidad el 15 de marzo de 2020. Inmediatamente, al día siguiente, lunes, recibimos una comunicación por correo electrónico de la Arquidiócesis que nos dice que dejemos de celebrar la misa en público. El Arzobispo declaró que todas las personas fieles de la Iglesia Católica en la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles están exentas de asistir a la misa del domingo a partir de inmediato hasta nuevo aviso debido a la propagación del coronavirus que causa la enfermedad llamada COVID-19. Ese fue el momento en que literalmente cerramos la iglesia por cualquier servicio público. Algún tiempo después del anuncio, comenzamos a poner nuestra celebración diaria de la misa a disposición del público a través de Live Streaming en Facebook (www.facebook.com/ihmcla). En la primera semana de abril, otra comunicación de la Arquidiócesis instruyó a todas las parroquias a continuar manteniendo el status quo hasta que salga una señal de las autoridades civiles. Esperamos hasta el 15 de mayo esa señal de salida. Desafortunadamente, hace solo una semana, el Arzobispo José H. Gómez nos informó que la orden de "Quedarse en casa segura" continúa hasta nuevo aviso. Eso significa que todavía no se nos permite abrir la iglesia al público y que continuamos haciendo que nuestra misa diaria esté disponible en línea a través de Facebook Live Streaming. Ha pasado un tiempo tranquilo desde que hacemos nuestro mejor esfuerzo para ayudar a mitigar la propagación del coronavirus. Creo que estamos en el camino correcto en nuestros esfuerzos por aplanar la curva de la infección. Más temprano que tarde, las puertas de la iglesia se abrirán nuevamente para el culto público. Sin embargo, ya no será lo mismo de siempre. Vamos a enfrentar una situación "nueva normal" siguiendo las recomendaciones de los CDC y las pautas del Departamento de Salud del Estado, sin mencionar los protocolos de la Iglesia y todo. Espero que cuando llegue este momento, estemos listos para la gran inauguración. Necesitamos organizarnos para asegurarnos de que la iglesia esté lista para que los fieles adoren en un ambiente seguro y limpio en relación con la propagación de la infección. Es el mandato de la Iglesia continuar propagando, definitivamente, no el virus, sino las buenas noticias de Jesucristo, nuestro Señor resucitado, a todo el mundo. Ahora que estamos casi al final de esta pandemia, prepárese para extender nuestras alas una vez más y gritar al mundo que Jesús es el Señor, hoy, mañana y para siempre. Que el Señor continúe manteniéndonos seguros y saludables mientras nos preparamos para el fin de esta pandemia en nuestra historia. Deje que nuestro viaje de fe continúe incluso en medio de este difícil desafío. Y, que el Inmaculado Corazón de María nos acompañe siempre en esta difícil tarea de dar testimonio del amor y la misericordia de Cristo a todos los que nos encontramos. Quédese en casa, manténgase seguro y observe el distanciamiento social en lugares públicos. Dios nos bendiga a todos.

Mensaje de Padre Tino... Ascensión del Señor En el evangelio acabamos de escuchar las instrucciones finales de Nuestro Señor, su Última Voluntad y Testamento. Justo antes de dejarlos, les recuerda lo que espera de ellos. Anteriormente los había enviado a difundir el Reino de Dios. Los que van en su nombre, lo hacen con su autoridad. La autoridad va con la misión, por así decirlo. En la versión de Mateo, ahora agrega esta gran promesa: "Estoy contigo siempre, incluso hasta el final de los tiempos". Marcos dice que el Señor trabajó con ellos y confirmó el mensaje con las señales que lo acompañaban”. Y Lucas enfatiza que estarán "vestidos con poder de lo alto", es decir, con la inspiración del Espíritu Santo. Jesús es muy definido sobre lo que tiene que decir. Como cualquier reunión de personas, los sentimientos de sus discípulos fueron variados. Pero los envía a hablar y actuar en su nombre. Su misión era fácil y difícil: fácil de entender, pero difícil de llevar a cabo. Fue para enseñar a otros todo lo que él les había enseñado. Así como él les pidió que siguieran su camino, ellos debían pedir que otros también lo siguieran. ¿Alguna vez un médico te recetó antibióticos? La guía más básica sobre antibióticos es completar el curso. Incluso si el paciente comienza a sentirse bien después de unos días, dejar de tomar el medicamento puede empeorar su condición. Del mismo modo, el mensaje de salvación debe continuar siendo compartido hasta el final de los tiempos. Con todos los cambios en la iglesia y en la sociedad, ni Jesús ni su mensaje han cambiado. Su Evangelio sigue siendo un llamado a vivir nuestras vidas al máximo. Tu puedes escribir una nueva página del evangelio cada día, a través de todo lo que haces y lo que digas. Otros leen lo que escribes, se fiel y verdadero. Dios está con nosotros siempre. Esto puede ser una verdadera ayuda contra la soledad. Estar solo no es lo mismo que vivir en soledad. Uno puede sentirse solo en una calle concurrida. Esto se aplica especialmente a aquellos que creen en la promesa: "Estoy contigo siempre". Para hablar con él se necesitan sencillas palabras. Si estamos abiertos a su presencia en nuestro corazón, y la atesoramos, podemos experimentar plenamente esa "Alegría del Evangelio" que siempre nos comunica algo nuevo para nuestras vidas.

Santo de la Semana

SAN FELIPE NERI (1515-1595)

Festividad: 26 de mayo

San Felipe tenía dos libros

favoritos: el Nuevo Testamento y uno de

chistes, sin duda que es el santo del buen humor. Su

padre quiso que fuera

comerciante, pero una visita a las catacumbas de los mártires transformó su vida. Estando en la

universidad decidió educar a los jóvenes y vender todos sus libros para dar el dinero a los pobres,

pues “sólo amar” es lo que cuenta. Se entregó en cuerpo y alma al apostolado juvenil atrayendo

jóvenes ricos y pobres al cuidado de los enfermos,

servicio en hospitales y vida de oración. Su intimidad con Dios fue tan notable en su sabio

consejo que éste fue buscado por obispos y papas; de hecho, fue director espiritual de grandes santos

como Ignacio de Loyola y Carlos Borromeo. Fue ordenado sacerdote en 1551 y fundó un

oratorio designado a la instrucción espiritual, al

canto y a la caridad. Debido a su santidad y calidad de vida, uno de los papas quiso

nombrarle cardenal y le dejó un sombrero cardenalicio en su cuarto, pero san Felipe lo

utilizó para atrapar la pelota. `

EMPUJADOS” A LA MISIÓN

Hay un personaje encantado en Las historias del Dr. Dolittle llamado “Pushmi-Pullyu” [equivalente a Mempujas-Tehalo]. Es

una bestia con dos mitades idénticas, con una cabeza en cada extremo. Sea cual fuera la dirección en que camina la bestia, un extremo “empuja” y el otro “hala”. La fiesta de hoy refleja

algo parecido en la vida de la Iglesia. En el libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, es la Ascensión de Cristo la que llama al

Espíritu Santo, quien a su vez envía o “empuja” a la Iglesia a

realizar su misión. Tal es el mensaje que hoy oímos decir a los ángeles cuando dicen a los amigos de Jesús que no se queden

mirando hacia las nubes, sino que se pongan en acción. Es el mensaje del mismo Jesús en el Evangelio según Mateo,

cuando los envía a bautizar: “yo estaré con ustedes todos los

días, hasta el fin del mundo” (Mateo 28:20). Y es este mensaje, con fe llena de confianza en Jesús que ha ascendido con gritos

de gozo, el que “nos empuja” hacia nuestro destino final. La vida del discípulo fiel, enviado al mundo con su misión, es la que un día conocerá la misma gloria resucitada y ascendida.
