October 8, 2020 Bienvenido el parochia! V. 46 #09

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends,

The Class of 2021 took the Virtual Columbia-Monroe County Field Trip October 8, which started with 127 slides and some local artifacts and ending with a visit to Palmier Cemetery, the resting place of many of the early settlers in the Columbia area. It is an active cemetery, thanks to the work of Vernon Ritter, Gene Haller, and local history lovers who brought it back to life after a time of neglect. Parishioner Jim Lansing is currently on the Cemetery Committee.

Former ICS Kindergarten Aid Liz Brees (her husband is a third cousin to the QB) is laid to rest there. A native American legend states that you die twice. Once when you physically die, and then again when no one remembers you anymore. We annually visit graves there so their memory lingers on. Students will write a paper on the day and we’ll publish some of their insight. Tombstone rubbing from Palmier Hill Cemetery

Lila and Ty Griffin’s Grandma and Grandpa and Great Aunt are suffering from health

issues and Covid-19. Please say a prayer for Joan and John Prigge and Great Aunt

Joanna. When you want to help and can’t, the suffering is magnified. Through prayer,

we know we are not alone.

Baby Isla Lunk On Friday, October 2nd, Isla had another lymphangieagram at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to repair the leak in her lymphatic system. She came through fine, but is in ICU for a few days to recover. We now wait and pray that the pleural effusion (fluid surrounding her lungs) goes away as a result of this procedure. Elijah and Ingrid are in our Pre-K and Pre-S. Update from Grandpa Dave Haislar. Pat Smith, wife of Tom Smith, (Waterloo Mayor and our exterminator), has a brain tumor and needs our prayers. Sometimes life seems too big for us to handle. Please share the load in prayer. Our Parish Secretary Angie Bueltemann’s dad George has died. George got me a $3.29 an hour job with lots of overtime in 1969 at Southwest Truck Body and Fabricating that went a long way in funding my college as a kid. (As an extra incentive, all my fellow workers minus digits taught me about being safety conscious.) George was on our School Board, active in the Knights of Columbus and Rotary, was an inventor, customized Clydesdale trailers for AB, was a master cabinet maker and wood worker, and a bright guy who could make you laugh. He died just 4 days after former parish organist Rich Cullen. Our Parish Men’s Choir and their ladies made up most of the Strassenfest Singers and Dancers.(Favorite song was “In Heaven There Is No Beer.” He was another one of those great people who make you smile when you think of them. Rest in peace George and thanks for all your goodness.

The picture of Admiral Trost below is from our Trophy Case. As Chief of Naval Operations, the highest position a sailor can attain, we met with him in the Pentagon in the early years of our DC trips. Once you have attained this position, you have to retire. Though born in Valmeyer, he grew up in Columbia, and attended Dupo High School since it was accredited. Several Columbia students were able to do that till Columbia attained accreditation. Carlisle graduated first in his class at Annapolis. (So did Gus Weinel in 1936. Our parish property is part of the Weinel Estate. Gus went down in the submarine Cisco during WW II off the Phillippines. I believe they are still looking for his ship. He would have surely made Admiral, like his two brothers John and Phillip. Gus’s brother Art told me that Gus was the best of all the boys.) It is extremely rare that such a small town like Columbia would have 3 Admirals and we would have had Gus too. But great people come from small towns…like Lynn Ripplemeyer of Valmeyer, first woman to pilot a 767. Google her and you will see she that she suffered much to break the glass ceiling. God’s peace to Admiral Trost and his family.

Admiral Carlisle Albert Herman Trost, 90, of Annapolis, Md., died Sept. 29, 2020 from complications related to a fall. He was born April 24, 1930, in Valmeyer, the son of the late Elmer H. and Luella (nee Hoffmann) Trost. Admiral Trost is the namesake of Columbia’s Admiral Trost Park as well as one of the two admirals recognized for Admiral Parkway (Rt. 3 through Columbia). His childhood years involved working on his grandparents’ farm and excelling at school. He worked several jobs to pay his high school tuition and attended Washington University in St. Louis on a one-year Army ROTC scholarship. At the end of that year, and uncertain the scholarship would renew, Carl applied for an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in

Annapolis, Md., and entered the Academy in July 1949 as a member of the USNA Class of 1953, graduating the first in his class. Carl continued his studies at the University of Freiburg, Germany, the Naval Submarine School and the Advanced Naval Nuclear Power Course. His 37 years of commissioned service included being the Commanding Officer of the submarine USS Sam Rayburn, Commander Submarine Group Five, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Commander of the Seventh Fleet, and Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet / Deputy Commander of the U.S. Atlantic Command. In 1986, he was nominated by Pres. Ronald Reagan to serve as the 23rd Chief of Naval Operations, a position he held from 1986 until his retirement from the Navy in 1990. To date, Admiral Trost is the only Chief of Naval Operations who also graduated first in his class from the Naval Academy. Outside of the Navy, Carl was Chairman of the Olmsted Foundation, a member of the National Eagle Scout Association, and on the boards of Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, LL&E and GPU. In the early 1990s, Carl helped his wife, Pauline, bring to life her vision of helping the families of injured and ill service members. The Fisher House Foundation was established after a conversation with their friends Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher, and over the past 30 years. The Fisher House has provided more than 400,000 families with a “home away from home” near medical centers while their loved ones heal. Admiral Trost is survived by his children, Carl Michael, Laura Lee Carrico (John), Steve (Gail) and Kathleen; and grandchildren, Scott Carrico, Megan Sugrue (Alexander), William Trost (Michelle), Justin Carrico (Arielle), Haley Trost and Alexa Trost. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline; and sister, Mardelle Lou.

This Weekend’s Scriptures: Our Parish has suffered from much death lately. So God

speaks to us right where we are. First Reading from Isaiah 25 is a popular funeral

reading. “On this mountain”… and then in St. Paul to the Philippians 4 we have Zac

Epplin’s favorite slogan and our office wall art work of “I can do all things through Christ

who strengthens me.” Now that Gospel---did you make the Guest List? Seems we all

did but some of us just plain refuse to come. Maybe we didn’t have the right clothes or

maybe we had to sleep in or maybe select sports are more important. We are all

invited. Did you ever try to have a party and no one would come? We know the human

pain we feel. God can’t feel pain. But God loves us either way. Come to the party. As I

told the class in the cemetery this morning, so often I help out at a funeral to do my duty

and I get a card back saying “you’ll never know how much it meant to me that you

came.” You do it because it’s right. And you end up feeling glad you came. Come to

the Feast this Sunday. You’ll be glad you did.

Mike Kish Principal PS No school tomorrow---Teacher Institute Day AND No School on October 12!
