THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
“We saw his star at its rising
and have come to do him homage.”
Matthew 2:1-12
Prepare For Next Sunday’s Readings In next Sunday’s Gospel, (January 10) The
Baptism of the Lord, we hear John the Baptist
contrast his baptism of repentance with the baptism
that Jesus will inaugurate. John the Baptist says
that he has baptized with water, but that the one
who is to come will baptize with the Holy Spirit.
John's baptism was not yet a Christian baptism; it
was a preparation for the Christian Baptism we
celebrate today, and through which sins are
forgiven and the gift of the Holy Spirit is received.
In accepting John's baptism, Jesus, though sinless,
united himself with all sinners.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Isaiah 55:1-11: Isaiah calls upon the people to
return to the Lord.

Baptist.

A Pilgrim’s Progress... A few days before Christmas many observed in the evening sky what is called the “Great Conjunction.” Roughly every 20 years or so planets Jupiter and Saturn seemed to merge reflecting a great light. This year they came closer than any time in 400 years. A conjunction of course is a word used to connect clauses or sentences. Many suggest that the Star of Bethlehem was actually this “Great Conjunction.” On the feast of the Epiphany each year our eyes are drawn to “THE” GREAT CONJUNCTION: JESUS CHRIST. What we know for sure is that the star whose light lead the Magi to Bethlehem on the first Epiphany was created by the WORD MADE FLESH: JESUS CHRIST. Christ has entered his creation to join Heaven and Earth. To restore what our first parents lost and reunite us to the Father. Matthew’s Gospel tells us the Magi laid before the infant Christ three gifts: Gold for the great King, frankincense for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of his burial. They then returned to their homes another way. If these days of Christmas are going to inspire us to travel differently in this new year, then we too must place our gifts before Jesus Christ. Like pure gold our Faith must be constantly refined, honoring Christ as king in every aspect of our lives. Worshiping Christ as God means knowing him as The Way to the Father and approaching him frequently in the sacramental life. When we reflect on the crucifix or pray the Stations of the Cross we are reminded that authentic love involves sacrifice. God’s Word (Col. 1:24) reminds us that when we unite our daily sufferings with the sacrifice of the cross Christ draws great fruit from them for the good of his body the Church. Epiphany (the word means to make manifest) is more than a day or a season. Epiphany is the very meaning of our lives as Christians. Let’s live it every day! Deo Vindice, fr john
EPIPHANY and the Chalking of the Doors
As Matthew’s Gospel proclaims, Epiphany
celebrates the arrival of the Magi to the stable in
Bethlehem. Most of the world (including our
Amish neighbors ) celebrates this day on January
6th, also known as Twelfth Night, or the 12th Day
of Christmas. Catholics in the U.S. keep
Epiphany on the Sunday between January 2 and
January 8. The blessing of our doors on this feast serves as
an outward sign of our dedication to the Lord.
The family home is our “domestic church.” Here
we can make the greatest strides in our spiritual
growth through daily prayer, spiritual reading,
and calling our family members to holiness by our
own example. Passing in and out of our blessed
doorways each day encourages us to remember
our homes and all who dwell here belong to
Christ. We should strive to be as welcoming to
all guests as the Magi were to Christ. Using chalk we write above the entrance to our
home: 20+C+M+B+21. The letters represent
both the initials of the Magi: Caspar, Melchior,
and Balthazar as well as the Latin phrase Christus
Mansionem Benedicat: May Christ Bless the
House. A prayer asking for God’s blessing and
the intercession of the Magi accompanies the
chalking. Blessed chalk should not be thrown in the trash
but put away to use next year or buried in the
yard. The Christmas season ends next Sunday
with the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Nativity
scenes are appropriately left up until February 2,
The Presentation of the Lord or Candlemas.

St. Vincent de Paul Society would like to thank the Immaculate Conception parishioners for their generous donations to our Thanksgiving collection. Your generosity will allow us “to do a little good” for those who are struggling in our community. A special thank you is also extended to the Ladies Guild for their Christmas donation gift. This year 43 families received Christmas food baskets loaded with a ham, fresh and canned foods, milk, and other items.
We are so grateful for your support and prayers
throughout the year.
We have received many cards and calls
of thanks from homebound parishioners
for their Christmas cards and gift bags.
Thank you!

Compelling Compelling Compelling Compelling
Many people reject or are indifferent to the pro-
life view simply because they’ve never heard it
presented in compelling manner. The Life
Defenders Workshop is designed to equip you to
communicate the pro-life message intelligently &
graciously without the need of vitriol and angry
dialogue. By focusing on two crucial questions,
What are the preborn? & What makes humans
valuable?, you’ll learn to simplify the abortion
debate and to refute logical fallacies of pro-choice
rhetoric in a compelling manner.
Our workshop leader will be Mike Spencer,
president of Project LifeVoice. Mike considered
himself “pro-choice” until shortly after coming to
faith in Christ in 1983 when the church he
attended showed the pro-life film, The Silent
Scream. Upon being confronted with the reality of
abortion, Mike became deeply convicted and
prayed for God’s forgiveness, offering himself as a
voice for the unborn. Mike travels extensively
throughout the United States equipping pro-lifers
on high school and university campuses, in
churches and serving as the keynote at pro-life
banquets and conferences. Mike is a gifted and
much sought-after communicator who has a
passion to equip others to speak to the often
emotional and divisive issue of abortion in way that
is both gracious and kind.
