Esslingen is bursting with history. More than 1,200years of architecture. An Old Town of national fame.Gothic churches, medieval half-timbered buildings,Baroque palaces, the oldest row of half-timberedhouses in Germany. The lady has good taste: in a picture book by theAmerican pop-queen Madonna one can quite clear-ly recognize Esslingens Old Town Hall. A mightyoxblood-red half-timbered building with an impres-sive Renaissance faade.

A splendid piece of architecture. One of many.Esslingen has about 800 historical buildings from allcenturies, more than 1,000 years of architecturalhistory rub shoulders within a space of a few squaremiles.

We owe this to a miracle: the city survived all thewars and bombings almost unscathed.

That is the reason why today one can see howEsslingen has developed throughout the variousperiods. Middle Ages, Baroque, industrialization,modern times the town has changed with eachone, adding something to what already existed.Churches, chapels and half-timbered houses weresupplemented with palaces and town houses,modern architecture and glass faades with Wil-

helminian-style buildings and brick factories.As the Neue Zricher newspaper once wrote inamazement: a town embracing all the periods fromthe sample book of architecture.

Something unexpected is continually discovered.The Wilhelminian school building, which nowhouses the State Department for Historical Build-ings is adorned with a six-storey glass tower,Kessler sparkling wine can be tasted in the trendyambience of the medieval monastic building,every summer there are concerts and an open-aircinema in the castle courtyard.

Esslingen is far more than just the sum of its re-markable buildings. It becomes an overall experiencethrough the relaxed and natural way this histo-rical heritage is treated. Esslingen neither flauntsitself nor is it a museum. The city is lived in, playedin, it is alive. Its citizens use it.

Esslingen was first mentioned in a document in theyear 777. At that time, its immediate neighbourStuttgart was nothing more than a marsh.Things have changed. However, Esslingen still re-mains the city with the prouder heritage. Proof ofthat can be seen in the half-timbered house inthe Heugasse. It was built in the year 1261. There isnone older in all of Germany.

It is in good company. There are more than 200half-timbered buildings dating from the 13thto 16th centuries in Esslingens Old Town. Each andevery one of them is proof of civil pride and thetowns prosperity.

Esslingens rise to prominence began in the year860. More and more pilgrims poured into the townin order to gaze in wonder at the relics of St Vitalis,which the Franconian Abbot Fulrad had broughtto the Neckar from Italy.

Soon one of the largest churches in South-westGermany had to be built in order to cope with the

huge numbers of pilgrims. It was on tho se foun-dations that, in the early Middle Ages, the ParishChurch of St Dionysius was built. With its twotowers it still dominates the Market Square today.The remains of the earlier church buildings can beseen in the Excavations Museum under the church.

Very soon other churches were built, such asthe Church of Our Lady with its filigree late-Gothictower, the Franciscan church with its medievalstained-glass windows or St Pauls Minster, one ofthe oldest mendicant churches in Germany.Esslingen became the boom town on the Neckar.

Still more important: the Neckar river was tamedwhen its course was changed and spanned bya 12-arched stone bridge. The Inner Bridge with itstiny bridge houses is still one of the towns gems.And so Esslingen became a town on the river,an important trading town and a Free Imperial City,famous and wealthy. Not until the year 1802 didthe town have to submit to Wrttemberg. But itsimperial pride has remained unbroken.

Den Blick ber die Erde und ihre Zeit hinaus ins

Universum ermglicht das Astrolabium (rechts). Das

Astro labium ist der Versuch, den Raum ber uns auf

einer Scheibe darzustellen. Das blaue Planisphrium

ist diese Karte des Universums, vor deren Mitte

sich besonders spektakulr das deutlich sichtbare

Planetengetriebe fr die Inneren Planeten (Merkur,

Venus) abhebt. Die auerhalb der Erdumlaufbahn be-

findlichen ueren Planeten Mars, Jupiter und Saturn

werden von dreien der farbigen Regenbogenringe am

ueren Rand angesteuert.

Ganz auen wird in einer 24-Stunden-Skala die

aktuelle gesetzliche Zeit (MEZ bzw. MESZ) mit

einem goldenen Kreis angezeigt. Der goldene Pfeil

zeigt auf einer innerhalb der regenbogenfarbigen

Ringe liegenden Skala die fr die Astronomie uerst

wichtige Sternzeit an, deren Tage knapp 4 Minuten

(oder 1/365) krzer sind.

Mond- und Sonnenzeiger zeigen den Stand dieser

Himmelskrper relativ zur Erde an. Der Sonnenzeiger

zeigt zustzlich in einer eigenen kleinen Skala die

Abweichung der Sonnenzeit von der gesetzlichen Zeit

an. Im Mondzeiger selbst erkennt man unschwer auch

den aktuellen Stand des Mondzyklus. Die scheinbaren

Bahnen von Sonne und Mond schneiden sich in

einer Linie, der Knotenlinie, die vom Drachenzeiger

markiert wird. Das Zusammentreffen dieser Zeiger auf

einer Linie markiert, wie bei der alten Uhr, Mond- und

Sonnenfinsternisse.

The planisphere has three shades of blue. The

lightest area indicates the currently visible part of

the sky in Esslingen (48o 43 18 latitude north). The

middle range shows the different stages of twilight.

The darkest area represents the section of the sky that

is currently not visible. The rising and setting of the

stars can be tracked through these zones. In addition,

the height and azimuth (deviation from the north-south

direction of the meridian height) of a star can be

determined from the grid.

The current time (CET or CEST) is shown in a

24-hour scale found on the outermost golden ring. The

golden arrow indicates the sidereal time on the scale

inside the rainbow ring. Sidereal time in which the

days are almost 4 minutes (or 1/365) shorter than in a

24-hour day is of critical importance in astronomy.

The moon and sun hands show the position of

the celestial bodies relative to earth. In addition,

the sun hand shows the deviation between solar and

The exhibition in the Old Town Hall shows:the future needs a past

Masterpieces of technology from the EarlyModern Period and the present day

To Theodor Heuss, Germanys first president, Ess-lingen was a town from the sample book of Roman-ticism. But that is only half the truth: Esslingenis more than history and idyllic half-timbered build-ings. It is also a laboratory for developmentand a workshop for the future. Tradition and pro-

gress go hand-in-hand in Esslingen.

Esslingen is a city of engineers. It was here that theengine of the Industrial Revolution in Wrttembergdroned. The "Maschinenfabrik Esslingen", whichmanufactured the first locomotive in 1847 and thelast one in 1966, was an industrial giant. For a timeit was the largest industrial enterprise in the 19thcentury, around which more successful companiesvery soon gathered. Their pioneer and inventorsspirit lives on to the present day. Every year, about350 patents developed by Esslingen engineers andinventors are proof of this.

The Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, whichis always one of the top addresses in the rankings,

supplies qualified young engineers. Its graduatesnever need to worry about getting jobs: an engineermade in Esslingen guarantees quality worldwide.

Festo is the leading specialist in automation tech-nology with 59 national companies and more

than 250 branches worldwide. Here one can marvelat an astrolabe, which is 500 times more accuratethan the famous astronomical clock in StrasbourgMinster. Each gear was calculated to the tenthdecimal place.

Esslingen is a wine town through and through.In 1486 the town council declared that the trade ofthe town was based entirely on wine and in the lateMiddle Ages the Esslingen bucket was themeasureused for wines; about 300 litres. This certainly wasan indication of what quantities of wine were drunk.It is understandable that some of the best vineyardswere well protected within the town walls.

One thing is certain even today: if you want toreally get to know Esslingen and its inhabitants,you have to experience their wine bars and festivals,especially the Onion Festival, which fills the Mar-ket Square with life every year at the beginning ofAugust.

The Esslingen wine-growers in the wine co-opera-tive are no longer the only suppliers of the Rieslingand Pinot Gris, Trollinger and Lemberger winesat these festivals, but also ambitious private wine-growers like the Bayer and the Kusterer Wineries,which have already received several prizes.

One thing is sure: these wines have nothing moreto do with the wines from the Neckar Valley frompast times, which were described by Mark Twain asonly being distinguished from vinegar by the label.That brings us to Hengstenberg an age-oldEsslingen company which successfully makes lifesour for Germany by transforming wine into vine-gar, pickling gherkins and other vegetables in it andproducing its famous mustard.

The sparkling wine produced in the cellars of theSektkellerei Kessler the oldest in Germany ismore bubbly and tangy. Top-quality sparkling wineis matured here already held in high esteemby imperial and federal chancellors Bismarck andAdenauer. The small but fine house with a longtradition has successfully defended itself up to thepresent day against the cheap sparkling wines ofthe multinational companies. Esslingen loves themfor that!

A city full of finds, gems and curiosities. Esslingensart scene is seldom loud and showy, but ratherdiscreetly colourful and special simply typicalEsslingen.

Naturally there are great moments and gestures:

when renowned literary figures attend the LesART,when the Photo Triennial or the Young PodiumFestival bring exceptional art to the city. When theTheodor-Haecker Prize for Civic Courage and Poli-tical Sincerity is awarded as an international prizefor human rights. When Esslingen becomes a Cityon the River and works of art bring the Neckar intothe city.

Otherwise it is more the small sensations and unex-pected encounters that mystify and touch one.

For example the LIMA, the Literary Puppet Theatre,where the strings have been pulled in a medievalhouse chapel for more than 20 years a farawayworld of dreams and longing.

No less wondrous is the Schreiber Museum, in me-mory of the J.F. Schreiber Publishers that once en-chanted children with their books and paper modelsheets. Their book about the Root Children hasbeen published in more than 80 editions and has stillnot lost any of its touching charm. Not far away

It happens year after year, always on the firstTuesday before the First Sunday in Advent: a townis transformed, rediscovers itself. It is almost asthough overnight it has been enchanted. Esslingensuddenly awakes in the Middle Ages, even thetown clock is put back 600 years: t he Medieval Mar-ket and Christmas Market have begun.

From now on, nothing is as it was around the TownHall and Hafenmarkt Squares. Jugglers and travel-ling entertainers take over the town for four pre-Christmas weeks. With them come the bathhouseattendants and stall-holders, the stilt-walkers andthe fire-eaters, the storytellers and the cooks,the tightrope-walkers and the musicians with theirnaughty songs and strange instruments.

And, of course, the craftsmen from long ago cometoo: the felt-makers, blacksmiths, basket-makers,scribes, leather-makers, spoon-carvers and chandlers.

The air is filled with the smell of charcoal fires andexotic spices, spiced wine, boiled and roasted food.

Soup pots steam, suckling-pigs turn on the spits,fairy stories are told and bawdy songs are sung.

The Middle Ages to be felt, seen and tasted, to beexperienced in the flesh: one can bathe in themedieval bathtub or practise shooting with a bowand arrow, one can learn medieval dances or singcheeky songs.

All around, Esslingens medieval half-timberedhouses create a unique and spectacular backdrop.The Middle Ages with all ones senses, lock, stockand barrel. It is little wonder that crowds flockto this spectacle from the region, from Germany,from all over the world.
